What the Hell Did I Just Read: A Novel of Cosmic Horror
What the Hell Did I Just Read: A Novel of Cosmic Horror | David Wong
New York Times bestselling author David Wong takes readers to a whole new level with his latest dark comic horror, set in the world of John Dies at the End and This Book is Full of Spiders.John Dies at the End's "smart take on fear manages to tap into readers' existential dread on one page, then have them laughing the next" (Publishers Weekly) and This Book is Full of Spiders was "unlike any other book of the genre" (Washington Post). Now, Wong is back with the third installment of this black-humored thriller series.Dave, John and Amy recount what seems like a fairly straightforward tale of a shape-shifting creature from another dimension that is stealing children and brainwashing their parents, but it eventually becomes clear that someone is lying, and that someone is the narrators. The novel you're reading is a cover-up, and the "true" story reveals itself in the cracks of their hilariously convoluted, and sometimes contradictory, narrative. Equal parts terrifying and darkly comedic in his writing, David Wong "will be remembered as one of today's great satirists" (Nerdist).

3.5 Stars • "What the Hell Did I Just Read" by David Wong (Jason Pargin) is a collection of short stories and essays, not a novel like the first two books in the "John Dies at the End" series. It showcases Wong's signature blend of horror, humor, and social commentary in a variety of standalone pieces, offering readers a look into his creative process and thoughts rather than continuing the main narrative of John and David.

The title says it all.

I kept turning the pages, but don't ask me what I read. It had larvae and memory altering and kidnapping and dildos...

Third book in the "John Dies At The End" series. Read in preparation for book 4.

Low pick.

Another fantastic wacky book from David wong . The third in the John dies at the end series . Not a series I would have chosen but read at the recommendation of my partner and I'm glad I did it's so easy to fall in love with these characters . 4 stars not my favourite in the series but still very good

I really loved this book! I haven‘t read the first two books but it didn‘t really matter. I just jumped right in and felt like it worked really well as a stand-alone.

I made it through the whole trilogy! This one was a little shorter than the other two, but still great. All the creepy through lines were well done, and I loved seeing the author‘s growth from the first two to this one. Hopefully the next installment will come soon!

I really enjoyed this book. It picked up fast and had me turning the pages. The sense of humor in this book, along with the sarcasm, is definitely along the lines of my humor.
The only thing that bummed me out, was finding out that there are two other books before this one. I hate reading in the middle of a series! But with this book, I didn't have to read the first two in order to understand the characters.

Anyone familiar with David Wong‘s writing from Cracked.com will appreciate how he works little bits of practical advice into this utterly ridiculous story about a depressed alcoholic and a methhead once again saving the world from insane, supernatural monsters. Anyone who has read the first two novels in the series will appreciate how John and David‘s adventures never become predictable. Anyone who doesn‘t know what to expect - that‘s the point.

I made eye contact with John and said, “I just want you to know, if it turns out you‘re a fake person inserted into my memory, my whole life will make so much more sense.”

Dave, John & Amy are back in their 3rd book. The group has to battle a supernatural threat that takes the shape of children. Only the guys can see that the kids are not who they seem nor for that matter is any one else. There is a villain who wears nothing but little girls underwear, a creature part bat & part praying mantis, an ex military guy itching to blow anything up & a mysterious organization that may or may not be helpful. Great, fun book!

While my first impression was that this was a nerdy dudebro's wet dream, I quickly realized that Wong has talent obscured by his crass (relatable) view on life.

It's mixes the absurdity of Evil Dead with the dynamic & routine of Supernatural, and reads like the Unnoticeables. I left this book open to obscene chapter titles for my guy to glance over and demand he read this next.

Hadn't read the first two, and didn't have to, but I might now!

This is the first David Wong novel I‘ve read and, OMG, it was fabulous! The action started immediately and never let up. The adventures of Dave, John, and Amy, residents of Undisclosed, reminded me of the cast of Eerie Indiana, all grown up. The monsters were irreverent and terrifying, and the trio of monster-hunters was hilarious and not as incompetent as Dave would like us to believe. If you like your mysteries weird and irreverent, try this.
