Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen: Awesome Female Characters from Comic Book History
Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen: Awesome Female Characters from Comic Book History | Hope Nicholson
35 posts | 17 read | 43 to read
A woman's place is saving the universe. Think comic books can't feature strong female protagonists? Think again! In The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen you'll meet the most fascinating exemplars of the powerful, compelling, entertaining, and heroic female characters who've populated comic books from the very beginning. This spectacular sisterhood includes costumed crimebusters like Miss Fury, super-spies like Tiffany Sinn, sci-fi pioneers like Gale Allen, and even kid troublemakers like Little Lulu. With vintage art, publication details, a decade-by-decade survey of industry trends and women's roles in comics, and spotlights on iconic favorites like Wonder Woman and Ms. Marvel, The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen proves that not only do strong female protagonists belong in comics, they've always been there.

Chelleo #1 same...aside from finishing up reading challenge from 2018 I‘m opting not to do any reading challenges this year. 6y
tournevis @Chelleo It's unecessary pressure, imo. 6y
Chelleo @tournevis I enjoy them for getting me out of my comfort zone but I‘ve been doing them consistently for several years and just want the freedom to bounce around. 6y

[#BookReview] The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen by Hope Nicholson! I picked this up kind of on a whim on International Women‘s Day and I‘m so glad I did! It was a lot of fun to read and now I have a few superhero women comics I want to get into.

Thanks to @JenlovesJT47 for putting this together and to @Betty for covering when my original match flaked. You ladies are so awesome and a part of what makes Litsy so great! And so crazy, my Alma mater is U of TN, so I spent about 4 years in east TN and miss it so much!

This entire book is delightful. I‘m only sad now I don‘t have the comics that feature such gems as “Maureen Marine”, “Tomboy”, “Mystra”, and “Sindhi Shade” (who is part of a dystopian society based on... libraries...). Luckily, this book also tells where to find these amazing heroines.

A fun and entertaining tale of interesting, quirky, heroic and evil female comic book characters throughout the decades. Also touches on women's roles in comic book publishing and fandom.

Beginning in the 1930s, Nicholson takes the reader on a journey through the history of comics via profiles of female characters. She focuses on folks who fit their eras, not necessarily those who're the BEST, so there are some surprising omissions, but I'm glad I got the chance to hear about so many new-to-me comics heroines.

The book left me rabid to read even more comics than I usually do, too. I'll start with Nicholson's essential picks.

A very beautifully designed overview of the history of female characters in (mostly American) comics, starting in the 1930s, 12 ladies a decade. This isn't comprehensive, but Nicholson has tried for a cross-section of ALL female characters not just the "best", including some that are problematic. A fun read and Nicholson tries to point out where one can track down the original adventures.

Inspired by @rincey's fancy lunch the other day, I decided to make poached eggs and avocado on toast. And as you can see, those aren't poached eggs. Alice Waters wasn't kidding when she said you needed very fresh eggs so the whites don't meander around the pan (the egg poaching attempt turned out like very terrible egg drop soup). So the eggs are fried 🍳 😜still tastes good though. (PS: TSSoS by Hope Nicholson is a delightful romp)

Angel O'Day is a #blondebombshell detective featured in the 1960s section of this book about women characters in comics. She is a D.C. Comics character, but her original series has never been reprinted. #characters2017

LibrarianRyan 👍🏻❤️🤓. Loved this book. They did a really good job on it I was impressed. 8y

Nicholson mentions Canada far more often than your average comics historian, so I investigated and learned she's both a Canadian and a local! I love surprises like that.

Hope Nicholson takes you through decades of US and Canadian comics history, showcasing many different types of females characters and their creators, as well a look into the comics industry during those periods. This isn't an in-depth & expansive look at female characters, some notable characters didn't make the cut, but is is a really good one. I discovered a lot of characters that I had never heard of before. Good read!

Continuing my comics-related reading this month with this book! I got to listen to Hope Nicholson's panel at the Calgary Comic Expo which covered feminist comic history and it definitely got me interested in picking up this book.

Okay. Here's the bad part about today. I went to the library to drop off a bunch of books!!! And then promptly checked out more books than I brought back. Thus breaking my "cut down on library books so I'll actually read the books I own" goal. Bad Claire. Here's the two book books I picked up (Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen!!!!!!!!!!!! Eeeeeek!). Comics I picked up in next post because I really checked out that many ?

The pub date for this one is coming up (May 2nd!) so I figured it was time to sit down and be schooled in comic book women!

I'm loving the set up for this book. Each woman has a little secret job with a short description, first appearance, creators, & a notable quote. Then we get a full length description of her comic book adventures (misadventures or lack thereof) in full honesty, & even a little note on if you can find reprints to read more!

Got this as part of my #cupidgoespostal box from @LibrarianRyan -- good call! Loved this primer to fab ladies in comic history from the 1930's to today. Lots of funny commentary, lots of new comics I need to check out, and even a little feminist theory snuck in there. Nicholson is quick to point out problematic moments in comic history, and also the breakthrough ones, too. This was great!

Reminder: the #drawme giveaway is going on until 3/9!
