Ginny Moon
Ginny Moon | Benjamin Ludwig
Told in an extraordinary and wholly unique voice that will candidly take you into the mind of a curious and deeply human character. For the first time in her life, Ginny Moon has found her forever home a place where shell be safe and protected, with a family that will love and nurture her. Its exactly the kind of home that all foster kids are hoping for. So why is this 14-year-old so desperate to get kidnapped by her abusive, drug-addict birth mother, Gloria, and return to a grim existence of hiding under the kitchen sink to avoid the authorities and her mothers violent boyfriends? While Ginny is pretty much your average teenager she plays the flute in the school band, has weekly basketball practice and studies Robert Frost poems for English class she is autistic. And so whats important to Ginny includes starting every day with exactly nine grapes for breakfast, Michael Jackson, bacon-pineapple pizza and, most of all, getting back to Gloria so she can take care of her baby doll. GINNY MOON is a compulsively readable and touching novel about being an outsider trying to find a place to belong and making sense of a world that just doesnt seem to add up. Ginny Moon is a brilliant debut. In asking us to identify with a developmentally delayed, autistic teenage girl and her peculiar obsession, Ben Ludwig set himself an Olympic degree of difficulty, but he succeeds with the extraordinary Ginny Moon. I was unable to put the book down as I willed her to overcome the obstacles within and around her. Ben Ludwig is a fine observer of human dynamics, and his sometimes dark sense of humor means that the emotional journey, challenging as it is, never becomes wearing. I was mightily impressedthis novel has all the elements for critical and popular success! Graeme Simsion, New York Times bestselling author of The Rosie Project

This has been on my shelf for 5 years. I‘m so glad I finally read it. Ludwig did a fantastic job developing these characters & showing how they all were affected by autism. I felt love, frustration, hope, happiness, anger & so much more reading this. This story was wonderfully crafted.

One of my favourite books so far this year. I love reading books where the narrator is a child. Benjamin Ludwig did an amazing job exploring the world, logic, emotion and social dynamics from the point of view of an autistic child navigating difficult and confusing circumstances. A real page turner.

I appreciated the author's approach in using the inner voice of Ginny, an autistic girl who loves structure-rules, numbers, precision in language. She likes “exactly“ not “approximately.“ We can hear what/how she hears words. The format allows us to better understand the disparities that exist between what she hears & how she thinks/reacts. My heart broke repeatedly as I read. Very appreciative of the awareness it brings to autism, abuse, etc...

LiteraryinLawrence I thought this was really well done. I don‘t remember all the details now but I remember liking it. 4y

Oscar Meyer has decided that I‘ve done enough studying for now, and that it‘s time for pets and snuggles. I‘m about 75% through this audiobook, and I‘m absolutely loving it, even though it‘s completely heartbreaking. 😢

Have any of my fellow Littens read this book? What did you think? Ginny melts my heart. ♥️

#2018Book132
For the most part, I liked this book. It was interesting to read about the dynamics between foster parents and their adopted daughter as they struggle to deal with a teenager who has autism. However, it bothered me that almost none of the adults in this book seemed to really understand that you can't treat a child with autism like any other kid because they don't understand and cope with things in the same way.

This was a mixed bag for me. Ginny is an obvious unreliable narrator which drives the events forward. Described as being in the same vein as Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Ludwig is just as convincing a writer as Haddon. Why I can't give it a higher rating is that is was just plain depressing and sad. I do know that others will love this book, and it would be an excellent choice for a book club.

👆🏻Author‘s Note
Ginny, you stole my heart and you still haven‘t given it back. 😩 I absolutely loved this book. Ginny is autistic with learning disabilities, & the story is told from her perspective. Ginny is in her Forever home, but something needs Ginny and in order to get it she needs to go back to her abusive home, even if it means getting kidnapped to do so. Both heartwarming and heartbreaking, you will be hugging your book when it‘s over.

Anyone read this? A debut novel--exceeded my expectations! Ginny, a 13 yo autistic girl, has come from a terrible home amid drugs/abuse; but is now with her forever parents. But there is so much more to this...poignantly told from Ginny's POV

Addison_Reads I read it with my 12 yr old niece and we both loved it. She bought a copy and gave to her school library because she wanted other kids to read it as well. Definitely recommend to young and old alike. 👍 6y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Told from the perspective of Ginny Moon, an autistic 13 year old girl. She is living with her adoptive, forever family and is trying to to get back to her birth mom and her “Baby Doll”. The journey leads her through some challenging times as she discovers her true home and family. Frustrating in parts and towards the end I found myself anxious about how the book would end. Would love to know about what happens next with Ginny.

Clwojick I have had this book on my shelf for over 6 months, and I feel like I probably didn‘t read the back blurb on it... because otherwise I would‘ve read this by now. Definitely bumping this up on my must read ASAP list. Probably will read it right after the #throwbackreadathon 💖thanks for the review ❤️ 6y

I'm still not sure how I feel about Ginny's forever mom. I know I should be more sympathetic towards her as life with Ginny and a newborn is incredibly difficult, but I'm still angry with her negativity... Always thinking the worst of Ginny and looking down on others (like when she talks about Goodwill). But I loved Ginny's story and watching her grow stronger and start learning how to self-advocate!

Chelleo Yes, Mara is definitely showing her privilege as well as bias towards her newborn. I get it to a degree. First time moms are extremely protective and are learning as they go. I‘m sure she would have been much different if she had kids prior to adopting Ginny. I feeling the same as Ginny when the baby didn‘t laugh for her. 6y

A pick, with some reservations. This was a very uncomfortable novel for me. Maybe that shows how good it was....nothing is black and white here. Everyone is shades of grey, except maybe Patrice. I almost couldn‘t finish it even 90% through because I wasn‘t sure I could bear what was going to happen to Ginny.

Ginny Moon is a remarkable new novel that dares to really show us what life is like as an autistic adolescent. Ginny Moon is that rare gift of a book that tells an incredible, poignant story while teaching an important lesson at the same time. Be prepared to laugh on one page, and cry on the next! Ginny Moon is as funny as it is heartbreaking ... and above all else, it is definitely unforgettable. #booklove #whattoread #bookphotography
