I‘ve read a few books lately - Bearmouth by Liz Hyder and Christmas is Murder by Val McDermid, the first I liked and the second not so much, but this one, The Cows, is worthy of note because it‘s the first book I read on my new kindle!! It was a great book about women with a part that made me properly gasp! The writing style is chatty which I like so I‘ll definitely be heading for So Lucky soon!!

I was surprised by how much I actually got into this book, I'm a crime thriller mystery lover, but decided to give other genres a try.. This was a good one to start with & looking forward to reading more of this type.. 😊

I really enjoyed this book and I was surprised. A friend recommended it to me a few months ago and I wasn‘t excited by it. Three slightly cliched ladies‘ lives entwine in a mostly predictable way. It had me laughing, crying and at some points I was dumbstruck!
Read this book if you‘ve ever felt pigeonholed by society into behaving in a certain way. It‘s loads better than you think it‘s going to be

Oryx I just read this on audiobook last week, really enjoyed it - more than I thought I would. Think I'll get her next one too. 5y
Ottergirl Yeah I think I would read another one too. I was gobsmacked when Cam died! Didn‘t see that coming at all 😮 5y

Another great read. This is based on 3 main female characters and how their lives intertwined. I didn‘t expect the twist at the end and it kept me reading and reading until the end.

One of my favourite reads of the year - I picked this book up on a whim and was pretty instantly addicted to it - had me properly laughing out loud and yelling at the characters (sometimes in agreement, sometimes nooooo!)

There were parts I enjoyed and I wanted to keep reading to see what happened. While I liked that they weren‘t your stereotypical female characters I also found sections of the story to be far fetched and thought the ending was a bit ridiculous. I was expecting to find it funny but for the most part I found myself cringing rather than laughing. It seems to get rave reviews so I‘m wondering if it‘s only me that wasn‘t completely blown away by it?

This was not what I expected. I‘d hoped for something fresh and funny (love the author on Instagram) but I found the characters to be stereotypes and the writing full of cliches. The storyline was bizarre. Also every other sentence seemed to end with ?, whether a question or not. Even the old people were talking upspeak. Mostly I was 😤. Overall too #chicklit for me. But still I‘ve not gone for a pan because I actually couldn‘t put it down 😳

BeckyK I‘m started reading this the other day and so many people have told me it‘s amazing and their favourite book etc., but I have no drive to finish it! I love Dawn O‘Porter like you, but this book isn‘t exciting me at all :/ 6y
JillR I was so disappointed @Beckykearns but perhaps partly my fault as I hadn‘t realised it was #chicklit (hate that description but can‘t think of a better one!) which isn‘t really my thing. This just confirmed it. It was a quick, easy read though. 6y
BeckyK @JillR I really like chic lit, especially Lindsey Kelk. I know what you mean about the description but I think there‘s nothing wrong with it. I love books that make me smile or laugh and are easy to read. I also love books that make me think or sit on the edge of my seat. This book, however, is doing neither so far :/ 6y
JillR @Beckykearns not much worse than a book that makes you go 🤷‍♀️! 6y

Hey Littens!
It‘s been a whiiiiile!
I‘ve deactivated my social media apart from Litsy. It‘s not good for my mental health, but I always feel the love here! I think this is such a supportive and kind place 😊 currently reading The Cows. Is my first Dawn O‘Porter book and I‘ve heard great things so far!

Shemac77 I‘ve been debating getting rid of my other social media as well. Glad it‘s worked well for you! 6y
Ms_T I completely agree with you about it being bad for your mental health. Glad you‘re still enjoying Litsy 😃 6y
BeckyK @Shemac77 Just do it! I felt so stressed at the idea of it, then I realised that‘s why I should! It‘s great now. Made me realise how often I was on it and how much stuff I did just to put on :) 6y

Very much torn between pick and so-so for this. It was an excellently easy read and I looked forward to reengaging each time I had to stop, but I found a few parts a little bit repetitive and the last chapters felt strange. I‘m interested to see what else she has done and what others thought. #holidayread

Very interesting! Life seen from the point of view of 3 different women, arguing that whilst their choices might be different, they are no more or less valid.

Little book haul for me and the kids. The Cows has been on my wish list for ages. I dithered about The Immortalists for ages as I‘ve seen mixed reviews but the Waterstones book seller persuaded me!

I really wanted to love this book because I‘ve always liked the author‘s work on tv and in magazines, but for me the tone was really strange. I expected a positive look at female friendship and feminism and for me this wasn‘t that. There were some good parts but overall I had too many problems with it to really enjoy it sadly. ⠀

Woah, what a ride! The Cows is a hugely entertaining read and no doubt! It manages a rare feat of addressing serious and relevant issues AND being enormous fun. The writing is fresh, light, easy ... and can knock you flat with a nicely timed twist. The characters are just a delight and the plot has it all - tragedy, humour, desperation, hope, romance, an "incident" on a train .... I laughed, cried, cringed, gasped and related. Good stuff.

When I first found out the Kindle Paperwhite had a reading time remaining function I literally threw my money at Amazon - I had to have one! But it rapidly became the bane of my life. I do this ridiculous thing where I try to beat it!!! Yes, even though it adjusts to my reading speed & 'beating' it is impossible.
Seriously, it drives me nuts. I could turn it off I suppose, but where's the fun in that?! 😉🤣🤔😁

Beckys_Books I do the same thing 7y
Kaylamburson Same! Although I feel like mine isn‘t accurate at all. I have an older paper white and it always says a shorter time than what‘s really left or drastically longer. 7y
DGRachel I usually set it to chapters and I use that to decide whether I can read another chapter before bed. 😂 7y
See All 19 Comments
Jess7 Haha 7y
Redwritinghood I‘m not sure how accurate that is. Also, if I switch back and forth between my Paperwhite and Fire, I get very different numbers. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
Pamwurtzler What??? That‘s a setting? Who knew? 😜 7y
Crazeedi If you touch the bottom it changes you know that right? 7y
Bookish_AF I have mine set to “time left in chapter” for similar reasons as @DGRachel 😜 7y
BookwormM I find it very disheartening when you start reading and the time keeps increasing 🤣🤣🤣 normally I get down to about 2 hours left turn the page and it jumps to 40 minutes 7y
readingjedi @BookwormM 😂 Same. The whole thing is largely pointless. But I still can't turn it off! 🤔 7y
BookwormM I know what you mean 🤣🤣 it‘s kinda reassuring 7y
Louise Sometimes I do this with my GPS! 😂 7y
parasolofdoom I always prefer the page numbers when it's available -- not every Kindle book dje 7y
parasolofdoom *does and I feel so at sea without them! Even the percentage doesn't really tell me much unless I go and look up the page count and calculate how many I have left. 7y
Chocamanda I do the exact same thing! It tells me I have 20 minutes left in a chapter and my brain says, "I'll show you, technology!" ? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Have you ever noticed that the time left is different from Kindle to apps? So if my Kindle tells my 60 minutes, the app on my phone could say 3 hours or 20 minutes. They never match. It‘s ridiculous! 7y
shanaqui Yes!! Me too (only with my Kobo now). 7y
Birdsong28 I am always looking at mine. It gives me a better idea than the percentage gage. @BarbaraTheBibliophage I think that is because the phone app is 'smaller' than the tablet app so it has to condense the file so it's longer to read. 📚📖 7y

4/5 stars. I really enjoyed The Cows. It was (kind of) recommended to me from HarperCollins New Zealand and I'd heard really good things about it and it definitely lived up to the recommendations.

It covers friendship, abortions, feminism, the expectations put on women, the right to choose to even have children and so much more. I couldn't put it down.
