Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge
Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge: A Novel | Paul Krueger
Bailey Chen is fresh out of college with all the usual new-adult demons: no cash, no job offers, and an awkward relationship with Zane, the old friend she kinda-sorta hooked up with during high school. But when Zane introduces Bailey to his monster-fighting bartender friends, her demons become a lot more literal. It turns out evil creatures stalk the city streets after hours, and they can only be hunted with the help of magically-mixed cocktails: vodka grants super-strength, whiskey offers the power of telekinesis, and tequila lets its drinker fire blasts of elemental energy. But will all of these powers be enough for Bailey to halt a mysterious rash of gruesome deaths? And what will she do when the safety of a real world job beckons? This sharp and funny urban fantasy is perfect for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and grown-up readers of Harry Potter. Includes 15 recipes from a book of ancient cocktail lore.

If only you could gain super strength (& other powers) by mixing a fabulous cocktail using the right ingredients in exactly the right proportion thus allowing you to use your “smoke” breaks to fight demons…I mean, that would make for an interesting life & it did make for an interesting premise for a book that was mostly entertaining. I enjoyed it, & familiar Chicago scenery, but ultimately, I don‘t know the book is that memorable. Soft pick.

Monsters roam Chicago. And the perfect cocktail could give you a superpower.

I‘m so torn. My favorite style for a magic system, Chicago (❤️), clever & interesting secondary characters, dealing with the uncertainties of your 20s, & the Unmasqued World trope. But, I didn‘t like the MC or her romance at all, there‘s no real acknowledgment of the nuances or risks of alcohol use & dependency. & the tone felt more YA than I was expecting. 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

There is a secret organization of bartenders who fight the things that go bump in the night with the help of perfectly mixed cocktails that give them superpowers.
I absolutely love the premise but I‘m not sure how practical it is in the grand scheme of things. The additional lore about various cocktails between the chapters was great.

The premise of the magic world is cute and innovative, if occasionally cutesy, but I had little sympathy for the protagonist or her love interest, and disliked the romantic subplot.

I -LOVE- Bar Association! It's such an excellent episode. I love Rom, I love Quark, I love Brunt (so terrible, such a perfect minor antagonist) - when people say that they hate/skip Ferengi episodes Bar Association is one of the first I think of when I think of what they're missing.
Another tbr pick, and honestly getting powers from mixed drinks isn't -that- out there for a Trek plot.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ to the March pick for @dragonsandteabookclub.. I feel like the idea was great but it just needed more. I liked some of the side characters more than the main character and I feel like the ending needed some more work. I really liked the cocktail recipes at the end of certain chapters and the back story that it provided for the magical side of this book.. looking forward to next month for sure! 😊

Listened to this after hearing it recommended on All The Books as a fun, light supernatural read. Found the audio on libby app and listened to it while doing my Christmas errands. Zane and Bailey were High School best friends. Bailey left,5 years of college, and returned to work with Zane in his Uncle‘s bar where a group of mixologists use magical drinks to defeat the “tremens” who roam Chicago at night. Antics ensue, end of world etc. Fun audio

Bookcation74 I have had this on my kindle forever. I need to move it up the list! 6y
Booksnchill @Bookcation74 only 7 hours on audio so I guess it is a short book. The narrator was very good. 6y

While I didn‘t have high hopes for this, I thought it would be a fun, easy read when I didn‘t have the brain power for anything denser. I mean, magic and booze - how much more entertaining could you get in a description.
Was I wrong. The story was incredibly boring, the main character obnoxious and annoying, and no plot whatsoever. I almost made it halfway before I bailed.

A girl walks into a bar, gets a job...
And stumbles onto the true purpose of cocktails & bartenders - to fight off demons & protect citizens. A cocktail made just right imbues the drinker with powers. And there‘s a quest to make the most powerful cocktail perfectly - the LI Iced Tea.

Fun romp. It feels a little forced at times. And there are some plot holes. But overall a great #spookyreadathon book.

Bailey is annoying because she is a natural at being a bartender which is an urban fantasy thing. I do like The Devil‘s Water Dictionary. Is Long Island Iced Tea that great? I‘m not much of a drinker.

Sweettartlaura The LI Iced Tea is pretty damn good - tastes just like it, with no tea in sight. I think the point of it is that it contains so much alcohol and yet they work together instead of each other... like magic 😉🍹 6y

What you‘ve got here, at least in my opinion, is an idea that could have been so much fun that you‘d want to go racing out to a local lounge, for a cocktail and a bit of monster-fighting. And yet, it isn‘t. Right off the bat, I thought, “My god, these people are dull.”

Chicago. Demons. Bartenders as demon fighters. Magic. Cocktails. Witty banter. What's not to like??? A fun, fast read that I enjoyed despite a few storyline glitches. Also liked Bailey, our heroine, and the diversity in characters the book effortlessly displays.

#JuneBookBugs #day17 #Cheers Cheers to the bartenders of this novel, who use special liqueurs & spirits to make demon fighting cocktails. There's one to make you super fast, one to make you invisible & one to make you ridiculously strong. There's a whole council that governs the knowledge of these recipes & to decide who can use them. I think this is a clever, witty, fun read. I swung between finding the characters likeable and annoying and I swung between finding the romance side charming and annoying but on the whole I would recommend this book for days when you don't feel like anything deep or upsetting... like these days for a lot of us!
