What Unites Us
What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism | Dan Rather
"I find myself thinking deeply about what it means to love America, as I surely do." At a moment of crisis over our national identity, Dan Rather has been reflectingand writing passionately almost every day on social mediaabout the world we live in, what our core ideals have been and should be, and what it means to be an American. Now, in a collection of wholly original essays, the venerated television journalist celebrates our shared values and what matters most in our great country, and shows us what patriotism looks like. Writing about the institutions that sustain us, such as public libraries, public schools, and national parks; the values that have transformed us, such as the struggle for civil rights; and the drive toward science and innovation that has made the United States great, Rather will bring to bear his decades of experience on the frontlines of the world's biggest stories, and offer readers a way forward. After a career spent as reporter and anchor for CBS News, where he interviewed every living President since Eisenhower and was on the ground for every major event, from the assassination of John F. Kennedy to Watergate to 9/11, Rather has in the last year also become a hugely popular voice of reason on social media, with more than two million Facebook followers and an engaged new audience who help to make many of his posts go viral. With his famously plainspoken voice and a fundamental sense of hope, Dan Rather has written the book to inspire conversation and listening, and to remind us all how we are ultimately united. This book will be a must-read for everyone you know who is engaged in the urgent national conversation right nowand interested in our place in history going forward.

Unpopular opinion: disappointing collection of essays.
While I found some bits and pieces interesting, when it comes to making his points, his argumentation was superficial and weak. On some subjects, on the press for example, I found his writing naive, very much ignoring hard talks. He probably wanted to write an uplifting collection of essays, essays easy to understand, but in this case it's at the cost of intellectual honesty...

i don‘t think I am the type of person who could ever sit down and read a Dan Rather book cover to cover. It‘s not Dan, it‘s me. I could listen to him all day long, and I love him on Twitter, but he does not usually write the type of books that keep me interested. That is until his work What Unites us was give the graphic novel treatment. Every library should have a copy for the civics lessons many kids are not learning in school.

It is important not to confuse “patriotism” with “nationalism.” As I define it, nationalism is a monologue in which you place your country in a position of moral and cultural supremacy over others. Patriotism, while deeply personal, is a dialogue with your fellow citizens, and a larger world, about not only what you love about your country but also how it can be improved.”

Dan Rather adopted and rapidly adapted to social media at a time when I felt hollowed out and hopeless. This book is a gentle, persistent call to action for the better angels of our nature, if they‘re still listening. Sort of a love story for the United States in its best aspirations.

When I heard that Dan Rather was publishing a series of essays on patriotism, I got a little giddy. OK, maybe a lot giddy! His unwavering faith in the power & spirit of individual Americans truly inspires. As an idealistic pessimist anything too sugary annoys me. His practical analysis strikes a subtle balance between criticism of aspects of our society, past and present, and celebration of American ideals. He gives the reader plenty to ponder.

Sace Stacked! But also a serious question not meant to be cranky or inflammatory... Does anyone know of a book with the same theme written by a POC? I would like to have that perspective as well. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I wish, but anything by John Lewis is probably the closest, although I don‘t think he‘s written anything about current politics directly. Sadly the old guard, anyone with a history of journalism behind them...in this country that was almost exclusively white men. The more current POC news anchors can‘t really write anything without making themselves seemed “biased”. I haven‘t read Van Jones‘s Books, but maybe 6y

Sace @Riveted_Reader_Melissa awesome! Thanks! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @RestlessFickleBookHoarder @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just read Van Jones‘ book and it‘s a decent choice for this question. The biggest difference is that Rather write for us, and I felt like Jones was ultimately pretty self serving. He believes we need to find the commonalities in our perspectives. And he talks about seeing where the parties intersect. But the book also sounds like he might be a candidate in the future. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage That‘s the main reason I didn‘t read his.... I‘m all for compromise and finding commonalities, but I‘m so tired of false equivalences...I can‘t meet in the middle with Climate Change deniers, Evolution deniers, strict Nationalist, etc.... That‘s just not my frame of mind at the moment, my mindset is more a stand up for what‘s right, equality and pursuit of happiness for everyone, no compromises there. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I hear you. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RestlessFickleBookHoarder @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve read a lot of great books by POC, I loved W Kamau Bell‘s book, but it‘s a very different kind of book, with a different point of view. It does touch on current issues though. 6y

What a perfectly wonderful book that couldn‘t be more timely. This is a collection of essays about what unites us as Americans, with examples pulled from his childhood, personal experiences, and years of reporting. I‘ve missed the voices of brave and honest reporters speaking truth to power on many topics, Rather‘s voice is one I‘ve missed, and I didn‘t even really see how much until I listened to this audiobook. #Nonfiction2018 #MountTBRReadathon

Wise, steady and thoughtful essays bring together the past and increasingly urgent present day issues facing the U.S. Rather is hopeful but cautionary, stating, “Our nation will not survive without an engaged and committed population.” I‘d like this to be required reading - especially for younger generations preparing to take the helm. #danrather #whatunitesus ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just the sort of feel-good socially political read I needed! He has lived in a crucial time of change+acceptance & it‘s revelatory to read his recollections on how ludicrous it once was to even CONSIDER a woman/black American as president, how oppressed women, blacks and gays were for most of his life. So, so important to remember— we‘ll never be united as a country if we continue to use individual/ideological beliefs to openly discriminate or discredit people who are different or disagree with us.
