The Count of Monte Christo
The Count of Monte Christo | Dumas
On the very day of his wedding to the beautiful Mercedes, a young merchant sailor named Edmond Dantes is falsely imprisoned for life, laying to waste his plans of marriage and hard-earned fortune. Following several long years in prison he has managed to escape and reinvent himself as the mysterious Count of Monte Christo. It is the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Count has been plotting his revenge on the three men who had him falsely imprisoned. With a new identity, an incredible education abroad and a vast fortune, has returned completely unrecognizable to those who had committed their crimes against him."

I‘m grateful that I‘ve gotten to work online all through the pandemic. My (virtual) teaching job is starting up for the year again tomorrow, which is exciting and also stressful! #gratitude @Eggs

1) I do! My current read, Herbert's The Rats is considered a horror classic. Several of my favorites are classics: Confederacy of Dunces, If Beale Street Could Talk, Northanger Abbey, Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Wuthering Heights etc.
2) The tagged book.

IamIamIam I've read the Count twice and it's awesome! I bought a cheap copy at B&N because mine has been lost for ages and my husband said, "Another big classic to put on the bookshelf you probably won't get to?" Oh, ye of little faith!!!! ? 2y
LeahBergen You‘ll like The Count! It‘s a rollicking good adventure. 😊 2y

So I read 300 pages of this and decided to take a break and read something else. I‘m glad I did because now I seem to be reading it faster. My goal is to have it done by the end of the year if not sooner. 28 1/2 pages a day will keep me at that goal. As of now I am ahead of schedule.
#reread

keys_on_fire I have tried to read this so many times, as I have had it recommended and it‘s on so many reading bucket lists. I would love to attempt it again and wondered if you think there‘s any particular ‘way‘ I should read this or how far into the story I need to hang in there before I would give up again. Any insights appreciated! 2y
MommyOfTwo @keys_on_fire I‘m not really sure. Like I said I took a break around page 300. This is a reread for me. The first time I read it straight through. There are some long boring parts so that‘s when it becomes tough. 2y

Believe me, to seek a quarrel with a man is a bad method of pleasing the woman who loves that man.

What a jerk-off that crazy cousin of hers is. I can‘t stand his pernicious manner. But, of course, what a great villain!

Several chapters into my abridged edition of the Count, I started feeling like I‘m really missing major parts of the story. My version is half the unabridged version; how can I not read half of any book in its original form? I just can‘t say I‘ve read this book if I‘m reading an abridged version lol. Is that crazy? The library has this lovely Word Cloud edition and I‘m in love with it!! (All 1,000+ pages)

#currentlyreading #classicliterature

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I read the unabridged version a two years ago now (maybe 3), I thought it was worth the effort. 3y
bibliobliss @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I definitely think it will be worth the effort!! 3y

#Two4Tuesday on a Thursday 😹

1. Any book that I could easily use as a doorstopper (I would never, though). The tagged book is a chunkster in my opinion, but I‘m also reading an abridged version so I imagine the unabridged version is very much a chunkster

2. Depends on the quality of the narration and the book. I‘ve found that an excellent audiobook performance can make the drudgiest reading experience much more palatable

A great rendition of this classic. And the artwork is absolutely beautiful. I'm looking forward to more from the Manga Classics series.

CaramelLunacy I read Much Ado About Nothing in the Manga Shakespeare series and loved the format! It works especially well for plays, I think. 4y

This is a really cool thing that this Manga Classics series includes. I just thought that I would share it with you all in case you ever wanted to read manga but maybe don't know how 😊

Daisey I‘ve really enjoyed a few of these Manga Classics! 4y
BeansPage @Daisey I'm really enjoying them as well. They are very well done. 😊❤️ 4y
dragondrool I've read six or seven of these Manga Classics. They're a lot of fun.

RainyDayReading The “how to read” has been in most of the manga I‘ve read. I‘m so glad they include it. I‘ve read manga so much that I don‘t need it, but it‘s helpful for those that want to try it but are intimidated by the format. 4y
BeansPage @RainyDayReading I totally agree. It kind of takes the stress out of it and just makes it fun ❤️ 4y

It has whetted my appetite for the unabridged version.

The artwork was excellent but the adaption was kind of confusing. I haven't read the original so I thought this would be a great first read. Unfortunately I found myself lost so many times! I suppose this would be good for someone that's alredy read the book but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that hasn't had a crash course on the classics. 🙄

MommyOfTwo The original is great! I should read it again. 6y

The actual novel is rather long, so I was impressed with how it translated to the manga version. By necessity, many things were simplified. I don't feel much, if anything, was lost from the story though. A section at the end of the book discusses the artists‘ choices in what to focus on and how, in order to pack the greatest amount of story into the manga version. Loved the artwork!
