Lawn Boy
Lawn Boy | Jonathan Evison
Jonathan Evison's voice is pure magic. In Lawn Boy, at once a vibrant coming-of-age novel and a sharp social commentary on class, Evison offers a painfully honest portrait of one young man's struggle to overcome the hand he's been dealt in life and reach for his dreams. It's a journey you won't want to miss, with an ending you won't forget. --Kristin Hannah, author of The Nightingale For Mike Muoz, a young Chicano living in Washington State, life has been a whole lot of waiting for something to happen. Not too many years out of high school and still doing menial workand just fired from his latest gig as a lawn boy on a landscaping crewhe knows that hes got to be the one to shake things up if hes ever going to change his life. But how? In this funny, angry, touching, and ultimately deeply inspiring novel, bestselling author Jonathan Evison takes the reader into the heart and mind of a young man on a journey to discover himself, a search to find the secret to achieving the American dream of happiness and prosperity. Thats the birthright for all Americans, isnt it? If so, then what is Mike Muozs problem? Though he tries time and again to get his foot on the first rung of that ladder to success, he cant seem to get a break. But then things start to change for Mike, and after a raucous, jarring, and challenging trip, he finds he can finally see the future and his place in it. And its looking really good. Lawn Boy is an important, entertaining, and completely winning novel about social class distinctions, about overcoming cultural discrimination, and about standing up for oneself.

After reading an article with the author about banned books, I read Lawn Boy to see what all the fuss was about. Without giving much away, there's themes of sexual identity & sex, but the book is much more about poverty & how difficult it is to overcome than anything else. I see no reason for this book to be banned. The honest reflection of class in our society could make some uncomfortable, but as the saying goes, “The truth sometimes hurts“.

This has been on my radar a bit, and the audio was available on Libby at just the right time. As for the story…. It‘s pretty character driven, about Mike, a half Latino guy in his early 20s, trying to catch a break while also figuring things a#out about himself, his goals, and his sexuality. Overall, it was alright - the narrator eventually grew on me, but it‘s a shame it gets challenged in high schools for what it is.

One of the ALA‘s ten most banned books. I read it because it was challenged in my high school library by a community member. I thought it was an appealing book for teens with lots of humor. It also had a protagonist who was a little lost and searching for direction, which is something that kids need to see.

#Banned LGBTQIA+, claimed sexually explicit
Age: 9-12
Maybe it‘s the narrator, but I didn‘t feel it. Miquel is figuring out how he feels about dating. I think the age range doesn‘t work (better for teen). It is a good book for those immigrant families who face discrimination every day just for being Mexican, let alone testing gay. The book also talks about wanting the dream job, that one job, you want. How he always expects to owe a favor.

Not sure why this is a #BannedBook other that its exploration of a half-Latino young man coming out as gay. I‘d call this New Adult over YA.

Mike can seem to catch a break. He quits a job he loves (mowing lawns) because of an exploitative boss. But he struggles to find work after that, and he and his mom can barely make ends meet. Still, his story rings much more hopeful than sad. A great “be true to your dreams” novel.

willaful Doesn't take much these days. :-( 14mo
Christy2318 Someone I know went viral with her school board meeting rants & police report over this book which was in 11th grade classroom library. She was convinced that the fact that there was a recollection of a sexual experience between 2 young boys made it was pedophilia. But based on other things she said at school board events, race and sexual orientation of the main character were definitely factors. 14mo
Cinfhen First I love the term New Adult!!! And I agree….this book had no basis for being banned let alone one of the MOST challenged books of 2022!! What‘s wrong with people???? 14mo

Reggie On my list of grey LGBT+ books I have read, this never even enters my mind. I liked this book but for it to be a banned book makes me crazy. 14mo
Megabooks @Reggie right. Very don‘t say gay because I think the larger themes are poverty and being true to yourself. The gay thing is virtually an afterthought. 14mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen interesting! I‘ve read a few and they‘ve all be #LikeNotLove! 14mo
Megabooks @Christy2318 ridiculous! I think sexual exploration among same age peers shouldn‘t be a taboo thing to write about. Especially since I felt Evison handled it well. 14mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB right? Very scary! Yeah I‘ve heard New Adult for books aimed at/featuring the 17-22 set. A bit more adult themes explored but still aimed at a young audience. @Cinfhen (edited) 14mo

It was my love of Book Clubs (I REALLY struggle with not joining any and all that come my way) that brought me to this book. I could not resist A Banned Book-BookClub! Mike Munoz, a young Chicano, living on the Rez with his single Mom is trying to find himself, and to accept his sexuality. He cares for his mentally challenged brother while is Mom is at work. He is trying to find a job where he feels valued. And he excels at topiary! #pridemonth

Lindy Outstanding topiary! And the book sounds great. 😊 1y

I joined a banned book club, and this was what they read last month. I mean…I don‘t get the hoopla around it? It was fine, I enjoyed it, it was a quick read, but like…what? Is it the language? I‘m a substitute teacher (and former high school teacher), and I‘ve heard worse language in middle school hallways. It seems like the cultural impact of the book outweighs the language. And these parents complaining, i hope their kids don‘t ride the bus.

Reggie Ok so I don‘t get it either. A lot of people saying it‘s the queer content but as a gay man who read this, I wouldn‘t even consider this an lgbt+ book. He barely realizes it in the last 1/5th maybe? I don‘t understand. And if it‘s not the ‘queer‘ content, it‘s because he‘s brown. Idk? 2y
Lauranahe Yeah, I also wouldn‘t consider this an lgbtq+ book. It was fairly abrupt when it finally happened at the end, and the story wasn‘t really about that; I felt like it was more about his life in general. My 18 yr old who pretty much only reads lgbtq+ books probably wouldn‘t be that interested in this. 2y
tonymp I'm way intrigued. It's banned. It isn't so shocking. Then I see the question about “the cultural impact“ and the pondering about if it's because it's about a person who isn't white. I haven't read the book. But, you know, maybe it's because people in power didn't like it. That's how book banning works. It works just like on GoodReads, or even on here. There is no actual thought or reflexion on the work of art, Ignorance and fear bans art. 2y
Lauranahe For culture, I‘m referring to first that he isn‘t white (he‘s half-Mexican), but also to poverty. I think it helps teach empathy, and that some people struggle to escape their situations. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was recently challenged then removed from two high school libraries in my TN county. Of course, I had to read it for myself. It‘s a thoughtful rendering of the wealth inequalities and racial issues faced by a 22 year old Mexican-American trying to figure out life. Mike Muñoz is a guy you want to succeed who is grappling with something significant that happened in the past (the reason for the removal ?). It‘s a great read!

Trashcanman I hate this too 2y
britt_brooke @Trashcanman Thank you for backing me up, George! Good to see you here. I‘ve been really off and on lately. Struggling to catch up on reviews. (edited) 2y
Reggie I‘m still shocked this book is one they want banned. And it just got banned again somewhere in Utah yesterday. They removed this one and I think 15 others from a school district. 2y
britt_brooke @Reggie Having lived in Utah for a couple years, nothing surprises me about that state, sadly. This book was present at two high schools in my county (in a Nashville burb), but has been removed citing it broke a law regarding explicit content. 😔 A reading advocacy group I belong to fought - and WON 🎉 - to keep another challenged book: “A Place Inside of Me” in our elementary libraries, though. LeahBergen 😡 And probably for “coarse language” or something equally stupid. 2y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen For pornography and pedophilia. It does have a couple of sexually explicit passages but they are neither of those things. The sentences were, of course, taken out of context and blown out of proportion. Tennessee public schools are a hot mess right now. (edited) 2y

Lawn Boy was an excellent coming of age story about a young man growing up on an Indian Reservation with his mother and special needs brother.

The story addresses so many things- racism, classism, and homophobia are just a few. All of the characters felt relatable, honest, and had a depth that made me completely invested in their journeys.

Great story that deserves more praise and recognition in my opinion.

I‘m so grateful to those deplorable folks who tried to get this book banned from the school system! Due to their nonsense I finally picked up this hilarious and heartwarming coming of age story. Mike Munoz is just trying to figure things out but life keeps throwing obstacles his way. This is a story of acceptance, finding love and learning to follow your heart. And certainly that type of message belongs in the classroom?!!! #BannedBooksWeek

Cinfhen Thanks to @Reggie for first putting this book on my #ReadersRadar 2y
TheRiehlDeal I looked up on why this was banned and it‘s because the protagonist is gay. Clearly people can‘t accept even a FICTIONAL person‘s sexuality! Just keep banning books, everyone! More books for us to read! 🤓📚 2y
Cinfhen It‘s actually unbelievable to me @TheRiehlDeal - I‘ve already started my next #BannedBook and I have NO CLUE what‘s “obscene “ about it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y

KathyWheeler I read Poet X because of similar efforts to ban it. I probably would not have read it otherwise. I loved it and don‘t get what‘s “offensive” about it. 2y
Reggie @TheRiehlDeal and just to put this out there, I would never consider this lgbt fiction. Like he barely realizes he‘s gay in the last quarter of the book. And maybe that happens for some people. There are latent gays but for this book to be banned because of it, shocked. I‘m still in shock. 2y
Cinfhen I TOTALLY agree @Reggie !! I LOVED Poet X @KathyWheeler and I can‘t believe that‘s on the list!!! It‘s true @TheRiehlDeal the more they protest the MORE I want to read the books!!!! 2y

Centique @Cinfhen @Reggie the whole book banning concept is completely bizarre. Here, if you want to ban a book or a movie, you have to apply to a national body that only bans like actual snuff movies. Like 1 every 5yrs. But we‘ve got this growing minority of anti-everything ppl seeking power lately 😫 - so sadly it may end up happening here too. 2y
Cinfhen It‘s ridiculous @Centique ‼️ hope you can keep your moral police in check 2y
Reggie @Centique I just don‘t get it. I hope cooler heads prevail in NZ. 2y
CarolynM Stacked🙂 Book banning pretty much died in Australia in the 1960‘s when Penguin and some brave booksellers defied the ban on Portnoy‘s Complaint and the govt lost in the law courts and in the court of public opinion. Our loony right carry on about a lot of the same issues as the rest of the world, but, fortunately, banning books doesn‘t seem to be a priority for them. 2y
Cinfhen Happy to hear book banning isn‘t a thing - another plus for why I love Australia 🇦🇺 @CarolynM 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie I agree with you. I was surprised that it didn‘t really come until the last part of the book since it‘s the reason for the banning. Such a good book! 2y

Reggie I saw the list of most challenged books this year and I‘m shocked this is even on there. Shocked. 😮 2y
Christy2318 I personally know woman who protested this book being in an 11th grade classroom library & filed obscenity report with police about it. She sparked a lot of what Evison had to deal with in the last year. She called him a “pedophil”. Her spelling not mine. She stopped speaking to me when I posted my own opinion about the book on my personal FB page without mentioning her. Now she is running for the school board. 2y

Christy2318 My son says she is on a power trip. We weren‘t really close friends but our kids are and I was surprised when she went off about this and other books. After all this, I‘ve found that she is homophobic & racist given comments she has made although she would be appalled if someone told her she was. It‘s a great book & very appropriate as optional reading for older teens. I need to read more Evison. @Reggie 2y
Christy2318 @Cinfhen It was very extreme and she went viral. Yesterday we had drama in our neighborhood FB group because she posted You Tube video there in her invite to people to come to her campaign meet & greet. She is quite proud of herself as “that mom”! 2y
Cinfhen I hope she‘s not getting too much local support @Christy2318 2y
Christy2318 I hope not but local election turn out is always so low that I worry only the extremists will show up. 2y
Reggie @Christy2318 there was a woman in Texas with the same profile and her son had to out her on Twitter because he is gay and her and her husband turned their backs on him. Effin hypocrites. 2y
Christy2318 @Reggie Apparently the mom I know told her kids she would send them to conversion therapy if they said they were gay. I don‘t understand these parents. 2y
Reggie @Christy2318 the fear is too much with these people. 2y
Reggie Also if you have Tubi there is this old indie gay movie called Latter Days. It‘s low budget but I really like it. @Christy2318 2y
Christy2318 @Reggie And I‘m down the Tubi rabbit hole! Lots of stuff I haven‘t seen or want to rewatch on there. Thanks for the tip about Latter Days. 2y

This book deals with economic class disparities, racism, and homophobia. I think that's the real reason why it was banned in certain school systems. There is no pedophilia as some parents have argued, but yell that loud enough and it will upset everyone.

I liked the book. It reminded me of "Shameless" but with less addiction.

Christy2318 A mom I have been friends with for years was protesting this book at school board meetings and such. She unfriended me after I read it and posted my opinions about it and book banning on my own page. People be crazy. 3y

I read this because it is the latest controversial book in melodramatics at the local school board meeting because it was in classroom library for 11th-12th grade English. People even filed a police report regarding obscenity. 🙄 It was a little bit of a Holden Caulfield vibe to me & there was a lot in the book to talk about regarding class, racial and ethnic divisions. Mike, an early 20s Mexican American, seems to be dealt a lousy hand at every turn. Pursuing the American dream leads to dead ends, shady characters, and occasional brushes with the law. Throughout, we meet a motley cast of characters and learn who Mike is as a brother, son, and “lawn architect.” At times heavy handed and occasionally long-winded, overall it is a humorous and poignant story of a young man discovering his path & himself. 3.5/5 ⭐️

Mike Munoz, in his young 20‘s, is a budding topiary artist who cuts lawns and just found himself out of a job. His tale is one of someone whose life has never been easy. Having lived out of a car, being raised by a single mother working 2 jobs to support them, a mentally challenged older brother. This book is about his perseverance to be better, to become something, to become himself. I really appreciated this book‘s humor and depth. Total pick!!!

More character driven than plot, Lawn Boy is an interesting examination of the working class coasting through life and a self-exploration of trying to fing yourself. The protoganist Mike Munoz makes ends meet as a landscaper and gardener but wants more out of life as he supports his autistic brother and single mother. He then goes on a self journey of discovery as navigated his path through with humor and warmth.

I'm surprised by how much I loved this book! A fictional story about a landscaper wouldn't normally be one I'd be inclined to pick up, but I loved the realistic characters and truth in this novel. Mike Muñoz comes from a complicated family-life, and he is constantly dealing with cultural discrimination and a difficult job market. He is trying to find the secret to living the American Dream, and his story is honest and uplifting. 4.5 stars!
