Animal Farm (Anniversary)
Animal Farm (Anniversary) | George Orwell
Since its publication fifty years ago, "Animal Farm" has become one of the most controversial books ever written. It has been translated into seventy languages and sold millions of copies throughout the world. This edition is being published to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of its original U.S. publication. It features 100 full-color and halftone illustrations by world-renowned artist Ralph Steadman. As vital and relevant as it was fifty years ago, "Animal Farm" is a devastating satire of the Soviet Union by the man V. S. Pritchett called "the conscience of his generation." A fable about an uprising of farm animals against their human masters, it illustrates how new tyranny replaces old in the wake of revolutions and power corrupts even the noblest of causes. This anniversary edition includes Orwell's proposed but unpublished preface to the original edition and his preface to the 1947 Ukranian edition. These appendices evoke the historical context in which Orwell conceived and wrote his classic novel.

10 June 24 (audiobook)
I had forgotten how much I love this ‘fairy story‘. I love so many of the characters: Boxer, Clover, Snowball and, most of all, Benjamin. I do wonder which I would be. And it tells so many truths. Orwell himself may not be a very likeable character but this really is a masterpiece. And Stephen Fry‘s narration is, of course, perfect.

#StorySettings Day 22: This illustrated version of Animal #Farm by Ralph Steadman is a keeper. This 50th anniversary edition also contains Orwell‘s unpublished preface to the original edition and his preface to the 1947 Ukrainian edition. Both appendices clearly referenced the historical zeitgeist that inspired Orwell to write this story. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-dBh

Last 2023, I‘ve challenged myself to read 1 book per month for 12 months. So proud of myself for being able to accomplish this despite my busy-ness these days. When I was younger, I was a voracious reader. Now, I need to schedule my reading time so this was quite a feat for me.

The book is about Communism. You thought it‘s not gonna be an adult read because they have animals for their characters, but dang! This is such a wonderful book, everyone can read it, young or old. Can‘t help but feel for the animals as I was reading this. :( Finished in 2 days. Dec 24-25 lol 🎄

Darklunarose I just recently finished this. It‘s a darn good book with a very strong message. 11mo

I read this in high school, and it still really is such a great book to make history more accessible. Makes me want to go read everything about the Russian Revolution.

Plus…I easily found 100+ #WGWordsearch words (thank you, Snowball! 🐖). #WinterGames

Finished this afternoon, I must say reading it again as a fully fledged adult allows one to grasp the concepts so much better then at 16.

I reread this book after a gap of about 8 years - and boy oh boy is this just as brilliant and relevant as ever?? I am always so impressed by Orwell‘s writing but this one just knocks it out of the park. His incisive analysis of the effects of power and corruption is razor sharp and something we can see at play in our governments across the world. Truly brilliant.

I tried to read this one when I was a pupil... yet too young!
I remember dnf it, but now I truly believe it's time to give it another chance!
I just started it but I hope to finish it todays as well between a work shift and another 🦾

KCofKaysville @Ast_Arslan It is so short, you can do it! Saw an old cartoon version of it on TV not long ago. 14mo

I started this book. I wasn‘t sure if I wanted to read this book at first but it‘s from the perspective of animals so it‘s interesting. In high school, I read 1984 by George Orwell and I didn‘t really like it very much. This is the only book I haven‘t read by him.

I‘m sure this book became an instant classic when it was first published. It is brimming with tons of themes and motifs that can address a lot of the problems in contemporary society especially the political ones.

We have recently revisited this classic to have a short discussion about it on our podcast and it still holds up. I remembered it being much more direct with the historical parallels and analogies. I actually really liked that the book never really says anything bluntly upfront and it is still very easy to read even today.

1. Animal Farm by George Orwell- if I read this in high school, I don‘t remember it. Discovering it as an adult, I can see echoes of it in our society every day. Brilliant commentary on the effects of power!
2. Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry - I‘ve never heard of anyone who didn‘t like this book!
3. Stephen King or Scott Hawkins. Would love to learn how their brains work! 😁

This book is magnificent! I remember reading it in HS and liking, but that's about all I remembered about it. Guessing I didn't truly get it back then, but boy does it ring true now. So glad I revisited while my own high schooler was reading for class (and he loved it, too). Great audio performance (and I defy any listener to not be singing “Beasts of England“ around the house for days!).

So glad I finally got to read this. My high school had us reading “1984,” and not this brilliant little “fairy tale” about how quickly fascism spreads. A must read, and one hell of a bummer.

Libro molto crudo e a tratti quasi divertente, dato che mi sembrava di leggere un report sulla Corea del Nord (che poi sottolinea anche il genio dell'autore, un cinismo che Kim ha compreso forse fin troppo bene)

I first read this in Grade 8 (circa 2002-03). I did not truly appreciate the book's satire until very recently. It was great to go back and discover it anew, and I was surprised that the same feeling of unease at the end of the book that I felt in Grade 8 still persists. #whatiread #booktwoof2023
