I can‘t lie to you I did not like this. I guess I will be adding this to the list of sarah dessen books that I do not like. It was too typical. And it always feels like the protagonist‘s life is so boring, like nothing to happens to them at all they‘re just observing other people do stuff. BORING

Esinclair Boring?!? Did u even read that 11mo

I recently picked this up at Goodwill. I had read it in eighth grade and wanted to reread it. I‘m not a huge Sarah Dessen fan as most YA novels are cringey, boring, and don‘t have much character growth. However, this novel was a pretty good one for being YA. There were some cringey parts, but for the most part, I was intrigued. It wasn‘t super romance-based and the characters were all pretty well-rounded. I‘m glad I bought it.

It was a good read, but not great. A thoughtful novel, that deals with underage drinking and substance abuse in a touching and realistic way, it is definitely worth a read.
The protagonist, Sydney believes she has been obliterated by the light of her 'shiny and charming' older brother. She was used to being the invisible one, until she wasn't.

So my confession in all of this is that I love Sarah dessen. I get romance but not the raunchiness of adult novels. They are always sweet. And this one was no let down. Plus now I really want that carousel in my backyard for some weird reason.

Sydney deals with the aftermath of her brother‘s actions.

I am a bit tired of reading Sarah Dessen‘s books. But I made a goal to finish her reading page this year and I have only one left!

Sydney has always felt invisible and that her life revolves around her brother who is jail after a drunk-driven accident that left a boy crippled. Then she meets the Chatham family who welcomes her warmly. She meets Mrs.Chatham, who is very sick but still the heart of the family, Rosie who‘s had her own tangles with the law, Layla who never falls for the right guy and Mac who makes her feel seen. This book tells a story about friendship and love.

My local book club picked this YA read for March. I feel like as a teen I would have loved this, but as an adult I found some of the dramatics from the characters to be a bit much.

I could relate to the main character's struggle of feeling like she was constantly in the shadow of her older sibling, but past that I just had a hard time connecting with the story.

I love it when widely successful authors dox a college student for voicing an opinion in a random article! That f*cking b*tch indeed.
If you‘re as interested as I am in YA Twitter Drama and you want to shorten your TBR of bullying authors, this is the article for you:

https://slate.com/culture/2019/11/sarah-dessen-ya-books-authors-brooke-nelson-so...

LiteraryinLawrence Wow, I had somehow missed this whole controversy. Now I‘m up to date. Thanks! 4y
Megabooks Wow! You think these authors would be a bit more mature. Very disappointed in all of them for waaayyy over attacking this girl. It‘s one thing to legitimately argue why a YA pick would be good for college students, another thing to call someone a f*cking bitch for having a different opinion. 4y
LazyLibrary I found it disgusting what they did on social media. I took this book off my list Bc of it 4y
SconsinBookyBadger Thank you for sharing. It‘s sickening seeing respected adult authors behave this way. As several people pointed out on twitter these women should prove how apologetic they are and donate to helping the now graduate pay off her loans. 4y

Starting off it does play out quite predictable, but still a good story. Sometimes I like the predictability as a sort of comfort. But, as with most books, I‘ve connected emotionally with the characters. It‘s different from her other works though, less philosophical and more real, maybe?
If you can‘t tell I‘ve never had to review books before, so bare with me. I would say ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5.

I get very emotionally invested in books and Julie is so much like my mother I wanted to throw the book against the wall and scream. It‘s so frustrating to have an authoritarian parent. And when I read books with them it just gets my blood boiling.

First time reading a Sarah Dessen book and I really enjoyed it! The author does an amazing job of thoroughly developing most of the characters in a way that makes you understand not only Sydney better but the world inside the book entirely. All in all a great book and I'm definitely going to be reading more by her!

I've read some comments about this not being her best work. It's the first I've read of hers and if this isn't the best, then I'm in for some great reads. I really enjoyed this. While I couldn't relate to Sydney on a personal level, it was so well done that I could feel how she felt and totally understood her situation. Definitely recommend!

#saintanything It was good, I just kept getting distracted though, had to re read some parts over a few times, that's why I voted so so, but I still liked it, I was bored at beginning a bit, then it started catching my attention in the middle to where I couldn't put it down, I don't know I just kept getting distracted and spacing out while reading most parts, on some was intrigued

This is my first Sarah Dessen book. I've been told by several people it's not considered a favorite. I can see why--the pacing is lopsided. The book moves rather slow until the end, which feels like a rush to finish things up. Nevertheless, I liked the characters and themes. I listened to the audiobook, which probably helped keep the pacing from being too annoying.

Also, Layla's obsession with French fries deserves its own category.
