"Pope Joan has all the elements one wants in a historical drama love, sex, violence, duplicity, and long-buried secrets. Cross has written an engaging book."Los Angeles Times Book Review In this international bestseller, Donna Woolfolk Cross brings the Dark Ages to life in all their brutal splendor and shares the dramatic story of a woman whose strength of vision led her to defy the social restrictions of her day. For a thousand years her existence has been denied. She is the legend that will not die - Pope Joan, the ninth-century woman who disguised herself as a man and rose to become the only female ever to sit on the throne of St. Peter. Now in this riveting novel, Cross paints a sweeping portrait of an unforgettable heroine who struggles against restrictions her soul cannot accept. Brilliant and talented, young Joan rebels against medieval social strictures forbidding women to learn. When her brother is brutally killed during a Viking attack, Joan takes up his cloakand his identityand enters the monastery of Fulda. As Brother John Anglicus, Joan distinguishes herself as a great scholar and healer. Eventually, she is drawn to Rome, where she becomes enmeshed in a dangerous web of love, passion, and politics. Triumphing over appalling odds, she finally attains the highest office in Christendomwielding a power greater than any woman before or since. But such power always comes at a price . . . "Brings the savage ninth century vividly to life in all its alien richness. An enthralling, scholarly historical novel." --Rebecca Fraser, Author of The Bronts

A perfect historical fiction novel. Clearly a lot of research went into this. The pace and writing, perfect. The storyline, exciting. It had everything from Viking raids, to plagues, floods, fires and lots of Latin 🩷 For thousands of years Pope Joan‘s existence was denied. She is a legend, the only female pope to ever sit on the throne of St Peter.
All the trigger warnings as it is a novel set in the dark ages.

Spent my morning finishing this historical read and hanging out with Terra! Following the life of a 8th-century woman who became Pope according to legend, this book was really interesting and well-researched—though I‘m still not sure Joan actually existed! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"This was the price for the strange life she had chosen, but she had gone into it with eyes open, and there was no profit in regret."

More than a decade since I read this last, and it's just as enjoyable and as thought-provoking now as it was back then.

Day 10: For fun, I am going to post one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want. #bookstoread #tbrpile @StaceyKondla

I was reminded of this book today here on Litsy! Suddenly I remembered the pressing urgency I had to read it. I am saddened by how often I say, “ I always wanted to read that book. It‘s been a Want-To-Read book for a very long time. Maybe one day soon now. I‘m moving it up on my reading list!” What are we to do as readers with so much good literature to get to & the weight of not enough time in every day? Sometimes I hate to think about it.👇🏽

Nute I wish that I could eat books...hmm, maybe gross! I wish that I could breathe books in like air...that‘s it! Pope Joan...ten years later - still unread!☹️

PaperbackPirate Yes I agree! And then when I finally read them and they‘re awesome I‘m like, Why did I wait so long?! I guess having too many good books to read as opposed to too few is a good problem to have. 💙 5y

Kimberlone Same with this book! I‘ve had it on my shelf for over a year! 5y
MicheleinPhilly @PaperbackPirate I feel the same! I almost get mad at myself like “This amazing book has been here ignored for so many years!” 5y
Prairiegirl_reading I‘ve also had this book for years!! I really wish that books could be absorbed by osmosis or something. Like the information would just come into my brain simply by being nearby. 5y
Bookwomble If it makes you feel any better, I've got books I bought in the '70s I haven't read yet! 5y
thebluestocking I really enjoyed this one. I too have many many books languishing on my shelves, but I think sometimes books wait until we‘re ready. 💙 5y
Susannah Totally agree. I bought Pope Joan over 20 years ago and still haven‘t read it. Hope springs eternal that the urge to read it will strike hard enough that I‘ll actually pick it up. 🤭 5y
Nute @Kimberlone It takes a long time to work up enough courage and stamina to read certain books! 5y
Nute @MicheleinPhilly There are many books that I try to ignore the fact that they remain unread by me especially when I hear so many people voicing their accolades. This is one of those books! 5y
Nute @Prairiegirl_reading Yes! Reading accomplished by osmosis would be fantastic! 5y
Nute @Bookwomble Whoa! TBR hopefuls from the 70s! Oh, man! I should stop complaining!😅 5y
Nute @thebluestocking I like that way of thinking: the reader doesn‘t find the book, the book finds the reader. Yes!🙂 5y
Nute @Susannah Its crazy, because on Litsy you are constantly reminded of “Oh, I meant to read that book. Oh, I remember wanting to read that book. Hmmm, did I ever read that book?” And when you reacquaint yourself with the synopsis, it sounds so good..now you‘re thinking about it all over again and wondering when you can get to it with a sense of urgency!🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
Kimberlone I am 100% guilty of this and also struggle with how to balance my reading priorities and interests. I also have a copy of this exact book that‘s been on my shelf for a couple of years still unread... (edited) 5y

When my book club picked this I was bummed bc I thought it would be a super-religious book. Actually it‘s well-told historical fiction about a woman who may have been pope around 855.
Starting with Joan learning to read as a little girl who‘s not supposed to, I was hooked. The focus is really on Joan‘s quest for & love of knowledge. I liked how she applied her learning to her faith. It wound up being a great female empowerment story.

Pope Joan was, according to legend, a woman who reigned as pope for a few years during the Middle Ages. Whether you believe in her existence or not, the way she is portrayed in this book was just amazing. I can honestly say this was one of the most interesting and captivating books I‘ve read. Well researched and exquisitely written, this was a historical fiction delight. The authors note at the end was intriguing.

Pope Joan is a beautiful historical novel. Legend or truh? I like to think is truh as well as the write tell us (there is a rich bibliography). Joan is a wonderful heroin. The setting time is ninty century. I assure you: you'll like it.

JazzFeathers Is this the story of the woman who allegedly became a pope? I've heard about it. Always wondered whether it's truth. 6y

#litsypartyofone got off to a late start tonight. But since I'm a night shifter, everything happens at the wee hours of the morning. I can't put this down. I identify so much with Joan's struggle to "hang with the boys." It's also bringing back a lot of feelings of anger I felt at the church when I was young.

I had heard the legend of Pope Joan before, but I didn't know much detail. This was really interesting, with a good mix of actual history and fictional speculation. Joan was a likable character, and I kind of hope she really did exist.

#seasonsreadings2016 #kickassheroines Pope Joan was a fascinating read! When I read it years ago, it started a little slow but a bit into it I couldn't put it down. And Poison Study series is basically a security blanket. I have read the trilogy about 5 times already and will never stop returning.

Lynnsoprano I hadn't thought of that book, but yes, Pope Joan was pretty kick ass. I agree with you about the slow start, but it was definitely worth working through. 7y

This is one of those books written as fiction with a hearty dose of non-fiction woven in. Cross takes on the historical rumor of a Roman Catholic Pope who was a woman living as a man and crafts a fast-moving, well-written tale that makes you wonder how much is true and how much is fiction. This one will suck you in and keep you turning pages.
