I would want a memoir from EA Poe after he was dead. I want to know exactly what happened to him on the last day of his life. Why was he disheveled and wearing clothes that didn't fit him? Did he have rabies? Was the famous author killed from a beating? From carbon monoxide poisoning? From alcohol withdrawal? Cooping? Brain tumor? Flu? Murder? #theafterlifememoir 😀

mabell That is truly an intriguing real life mystery! 7mo

Bookwomble I listened to an In Our Time podcast about Poe the other day, and one of the panelists speculated that, perhaps, he'd been "press ganged" into voting fraud, which was apparently a thing at the time - fake identity and "voter" threatened into the ballot to support a particular candidate. And, checking just now for reliability, I find this article on Wikipedia about "cooping": https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooping ?‍⬛ 7mo

dabbe @Bookwomble VERY interesting! Thanks! 🤗 7mo
Bookwomble @dabbe Thank you, though I belatedly notice that you already mentioned cooping in your original post. Apologies - I wasn't intending to mansplain! 🫣 7mo
dabbe @Bookwomble You gave me more to look at--no mansplaining at all! 🤩😂😀 7mo
Bookwomble @dabbe Phew! 😅 7mo
BookmarkTavern Yeah! That would be super interesting! Thanks for answering! 7mo

On this day Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 in Boston, MA?? Did you know the following facts about Poe? -Poe excelled academically at university despite his attendance and gambling problems. -Many scholars call him the "architect" of the modern short story. -Poe wrote not only horror stories, but also short stories resembling detective stories and science fiction.

Hello, #LitsyFamily 🤗🤗🤗!!! After a very busy day of work at the library, @BookBabe and I are at #GreyTowers for an #EdgarAllanPoe Reading 😱😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!!! Can't wait! 90 minutes of Poe-ish enjoyment.

Have you attended this kind of reading before?

Oh, and the portrait on the right is painted by a dear friend of ours who is sitting just to the left of this picture. She owns the Poe Gallery I posted about a ways back.

🗂 Chaos! Over 1000 with small & insufficient shelves. Stacks all over. I have a few piles for: ARCs/Giveaways won, middle grade, and mass market paperback. I guess newer in is closer to the top.
📖 Collection of Edgar Allan Poe works. Romance, Poetry, Suspence, Horror... he's got it all.
👃 Sometimes at home, mostly when buying used.
📚 Yes, but usually for cute covers & used.

Our literary adventure continues with a visit to one of the homes Poe lived in during his six years in Philly. This mural was right across the street.

Day 2, of my 7 days of Poe stuff... ? I bought this through a Kickstarter project (https://goo.gl/sRf1Nb) a few years ago. The illustrations are by David G. Forés. I forgot what package this was but it included the LP and several other things. There are so many Kickstarter projects, some Poe related, but I try to stick to my favorites. It‘s worth keeping a close eye on their site, just in case something special turns up. ?

SconsinBookyBadger Wow what a beautiful Kickstarter collection 😍 7y
GarthRanzz I need to remember to watch Kickstarter for Poe! I should have learned my lesson already. 7y
mypoesoul @GarthRanzz Some, I love, and some are kind of ‘out there‘. This is one example that I decided to skip https://goo.gl/BdPPbL ... 🧐 LOL 7y

Pickpick

I have spent this afternoon dipping in and out of stories and poems by Mr Poe. One of my all time favourite poems is Annabel Lee! Matthew Gray Gubler does a wonderful reading of it that I found on you tube 😍 I plan to work my way through this collection in the next year! Does anyone else have a favourite work by Poe?! #Poe #AnnabelLee #poetry

Reviewsbylola That is the most unfortunate portrait of Poe I‘ve ever seen. 7y
KennedyBooks @Reviewsbylola 😂 yes it doesn‘t capture him in his best light! Lucky I don‘t judge books by their covers! 7y

In honor of #nationalbookloversday, the Providence Athenaeum, where in 1848, Edgar Allan Poe's fiancée, poet Sarah Helen Whitman, broke up with him 2 days before their Christmas wedding due to his alcoholism (he proposed in a cemetery, so the relationship was perhaps ill-fated from the start). The Athenaeum remains an independent members library and is a must visit for book lovers if you find yourself in Providence!
