I got through this so quickly! I know a lot of people took issue with the writing style and the switching between memoir and factual but I really enjoyed it and having a neutral narrator as well as Jennifer I think actually added dimensions to the story. The story itself is extraordinary- you just have to read it to believe it. It raises questions over nature vs nurture and a look at truly unique family dynamic.

Hey guys! Discussion is open! What did you think?! Did you enjoy it? Favourite parts! Let‘s talk! @RainyDayReading @Quasifesto @starlight97 @sprainedbrain @cobwebmoth @BookwormM @mypoesoul @ananisgirl #eagerforedgar

cobwebmoth I enjoyed it. I thought the solution was really clever. 6y

starlight97 I enjoyed it too, it was really smart, and I liked how they explained the whole solution step by step. Although I had a hard time understanding Jupiter's accent, since English is not my native language. But I think I got used to it after a while :) 6y
RainyDayReading Ack I‘m so behind 🙈 I‘ve gotten halfway through but put it down and completely spaced on it. As soon as I get home today I‘m finishing it so I can actually contribute something xD 6y
KennedyBooks I agree @cobwebmoth I really enjoyed the cryptography in it! @starlight97 I completely under why you would struggle with Jupiter‘s accent! @RainyDayReading it happens to the best of us! Just join in when you can 😊 6y
SconsinBookyBadger Googling info on The Gold Bug I found a BookRiot story that Poe invented the word cryptograph and the first person to incorporate it into a plot. 6y
BookwormM I liked this story it was not what I expected from Poe the slow revealing of the mystery worked really well. Loved the way the title was a play on words the literal gold bug and the gold bug relating to treasure hunting 6y
starlight97 @anansigirl wow that's really interesting 😮 6y
CoffeeNBooks I really liked the cryptography and the explanation of the solution. It was so much more thorough than if Poe had just written "Hey, there was a code, I cracked it, and voila. I found the treasure." 6y
CoffeeNBooks @BookwormM I agree- the play on words was great! 6y
Quasifesto I finally caught up and read it. Pretty good. I remember liking it better as a kid. 6y

Hey Littens! I got to thinking this weekend would anyone be interested in doing a buddy read of Poe‘s works? It wouldn‘t be too much of a commitment- maybe a story or poem each fortnight/month and a group discussion about it? Let me know if you would be interested and I‘ll get a schedule arranged if there‘s an appetite! #EagerforEdgar

I have spent this afternoon dipping in and out of stories and poems by Mr Poe. One of my all time favourite poems is Annabel Lee! Matthew Gray Gubler does a wonderful reading of it that I found on you tube 😍 I plan to work my way through this collection in the next year! Does anyone else have a favourite work by Poe?! #Poe #AnnabelLee #poetry

Reviewsbylola That is the most unfortunate portrait of Poe I‘ve ever seen. 6y

I think Rose is an unreliable narrator- that is not to say she is a liar (not suggesting that at all!) But I do think she is now looking back over her life with the events that have happened in the last 6 months and therefore this has tainted the way she recalls things I.e the reasons behind why she wore the famous dress she wore at the VMA‘s. Also she is incredibly condescending to the reader. Interesting enough to finish. I tried to like this.

I really enjoy Stephanie‘s style of writing so this was an easy read. However it lacked certain things for me, you found out about the killer far too early (I expected there to be a twist and there wasn‘t) There were sub-stories that added nothing to the story and I wanted a reason behind the way each person was killed- but this was all lacking. I think a good introduction to slashers for someone who hasn‘t read them before. Love the cover though!

Why should you read this book? Because the chances are if you do not suffer from depression then someone you know does. Because no one should feel ashamed of not being well and we as a society have a duty to remove the stigmata. Because it is beautifully written. Because it is truth.

PurityofEssence @KennedyBooks Very curious to see your response to this! I find autobiographical accounts of mental illness to be very insightful, as the writer must often shift their paradigms to reclaim their life and, in surpassing their challenges, arrive at a place of wisdom, sharing it with the reader. 8y
Notafraidofwords My boyfriend bought me a copy and I gobbled it down in two sittings. Very well written 👏🏼 8y
MMFinck If you like reading about mental health in novels, Barbara Claypole White writes that. Her passion for it came from having a son with OCD. The Perfect Son is one. The In Between Hour is another. 8y
KennedyBooks @PurityofEssence completely agree with you! I'll let you know how it goes! @Notafraidofwords I'm about 40 pages in and I so want to savour it, I know I could do this in one sitting but I don't think it would do the writing justice! @MMF Thanks for the recommendations I'll be sure to check them out! 8y

This was amazing! Lived up to all my expectations. I struggled at points with how impatient the adults seemed to be with Jack bearing in mind he had only known a room his whole life and didn't understand the social standards of the world. fantastic read 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Shortstack I absolutely loved this book! They did a pretty good job with the movie but nothing can capture quite how the book made me feel. It was so well done!!! 8y

This bit in the film made me laugh out loud- out of the mouth of babes! A little bit of comic relief in a very confusing and difficult conversation.
