This book had a lot of buzz. I thought it was...just ok. Some really, really lovely bits of writing by a skilled author, and undoubtedly a very sad story. Maybe it just wasn‘t for me or maybe I‘m jaded, but I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and it never did. Happy to have read it, though.

Really really enjoyable. The full mystery is never actually resolved, and I rather loved that. Felt very “right” in keeping with the atmosphere created by Ms. #Jackson. She is so talented. Just loved this story. #mystery #spooky

I often remark that #coelho is able to write so convincingly with a woman‘s voice. This was not the case, here. I‘m not prudent but it felt exploitative for no real reason. Having just come off of reading Eleven Minutes, which I LOVED, this one just never felt like it got where it was going... still love PC, though!

GingerAntics I had issues with another of this author‘s books earlier this week. I really don‘t think I‘m a fan of this author at all. 6y
KatieanneF @GingerAntics I generally really love his books, but this one felt really different. Which book did you find problems with? 6y
GingerAntics The Alchemist. I felt like it was almost cliche. It was just “you can make anything happen in your life” which I find really ridiculous as it may have good intentions but it‘s generally used to blame people who do not succeed or live up to expectations for their lot in life instead of looking at situations individually and objectively. It almost came off as a life philosophy tract. I probably won‘t read anymore by this guy. 6y
KatieanneF @GingerAntics totally get what you‘re saying. I love The Alchemist and I think it‘s a very beautiful story, but I can definitely understand why yours is a popular critique of the book. 6y
GingerAntics I liked the adventure. The story itself was good. I wish more time had been spent on that then waxing poetic about personal legends. I actually really liked the ending that he sent him all the way to the pyramids just to see them and the treasure was always back home. 6y

Finished this one a few weeks ago. I‘ve loved the movie (from the 90s) since I was 9- my first horror movie- and recently fell in love with the show on Netflix so I figured it was about time I read it. All the dreariness and bleakness I felt was missing from the finale of the TV show (I loved it, but it seemed somehow not to fit). This book was absolutely excellent.

DavidDiamond Watch The Haunting (1963) which is a much more faithful adaptation of the novel and its great!! 6y

Though still beautifully written, this has been my least favorite thus far. I may be unfairly judging because coming in on the heels of The Likeness (which I ADORED) this one just didn‘t hold up as strongly. I didn‘t care for Frank in the way I cared for the other protagonists. She does a brilliant job of making you feel the toxicity of the insular world of the story, though. I became interested in reading this one after the many, many references to it I found while reading one of my favorite books, Bag of Bones, by Stephen King. I‘m so glad I picked this one up. The gothic-inspired thriller keeps you guessing and it written so poetically. You can practically feel the tension the second Mrs. de Winter feels with each passing line. A great read for anyone looking for a twisty-turny ghost story #Rebecca #ghoststory

rubyslippersreads Since I love Rebecca, now I‘m curious about Bag of Bones, if it‘s not too scary. (What am I saying? It‘s Stephen King! 😬) 6y
KatieanneF @rubyslippersreads Bag of Bones is a FANTASTIC book! A few spooky moments but reads more like a mystery than a ghost story. The characters (chiefly the protagonist, Mike) are wonderful. I highly highly recommend it 👍🏻 6y

rubyslippersreads @KatieanneF @KathyWheeler I was going to add Bag of Bones to my GR TBR, but from the synopsis, I think I might have read it. Or I could be confusing it with another SK. Is there another one about a writer who goes to live in a big house? And which is the SK where the main character had an unborn twin? 6y
KatieanneF @rubyslippersreads I have a feeling you may be thinking of the book The Dark Half. Does that ring a bell? Also, as far SK books featuring writers in big houses, where shall we begin? Lol. A common theme in his books. Bag of Bones has a little girl named Kyra and a cool past/present narrative. (edited) 6y
rubyslippersreads @KatieanneF I looked up The Dark Half, and that does sound familiar. I used to read lots of SK, but now I‘m a 🐓. But I‘m going to give Bag of Bones a try soon. 6y

I‘m always fascinated by this story. I‘ve read the book, seen the movie and seen multiple stage adaptations- the subject matter is, obviously, traumatic but a few years back someone put in my mind the idea that perhaps Chief imagined McMurphy; that he was just a manifestation of the person he needed to gain empowerment and, through that lens, the story is especially fascinating. #kenkesey #cuckoosnest #classics
