Until the show adaptation on 🍎TV, I‘d never heard of this book. I hope they‘ll do more episodes, and I liked some of the changes made on the show—especially when centering from the experience of Black Womxn. This book is full of interesting stories, each one about womxn in different, challenging and sometimes frightening, situations. The key is almost always, looking deeper within and rising over the world, claiming it as your own place—owning

JenniferEgnor your power. As womxn, especially queer, disabled, of color—-we are often pushed back, unheard, unseen. These stories are about taking that back. I found them to be inspiring and I‘ll be sharing this book with the other womxn in my life. 2y
JenniferEgnor I‘ve included a photo here of some of the amazing womxn in my life. Each one of us has been/is going through some kind of life experience. We go through it together, lift each other up, and are stronger for it. 2y
JenniferEgnor Lastly, I have to say my favorite story was ‘The Woman Who Guarded Gonads‘. In it, a man goes to a ‘clinic‘ seeking a vasectomy because he and his wife don‘t want anymore children. There are three women who ‘counsel‘ him. Right away, you can see that he is in what we call a ‘fake clinic‘, which most peoplx know as a ‘crisis pregnancy center‘. (In reality, these are HIPAA exempt religious centers which don‘t provide medical care but provide 2y

JenniferEgnor manipulation and disinformation instead). A protestor stands outside with a graphic sign, just like at real clinics in reality—only, this sign is of a penis, and there is arguing about language. Anti-abortion people don‘t use the word fetus. They use ‘preborn/unborn/baby‘. Sperm, in this story…are essentially, given PERSONHOOD. Yes, you read that right! Just like legislators are trying to give eggs personhood over the pregnant person, now. (edited) 2y
JenniferEgnor The man is ‘counseled‘ against a vasectomy, as it is illegal. He insists that he will just travel elsewhere to other countries where it is normal, common, safe, and legal; this is HIS body, HIS choice—how could they say otherwise?! At this point, they pretty much tell him he‘s just admitted to them he is going to do something illegal, and he will have to be turned in to authorities. Sound familiar? Texas, anyone? 2y
JenniferEgnor I love what the author did with this story and I‘m glad she put it in the book. With that being said, don‘t think the Dobbs decision doesn‘t effect you. It absolutely does, and they will not stop here. Please register to vote and let nothing stop you from getting to the polls next month. We are weeks away from a critical election. Vote like your life depends on it. IT DOES. 2y
IuliaC I enjoyed this one very much, I have to check the show as well 😊 2y

What better way to start the decade than by finishing a book! This one was given to me by a friend with the instruction to pay it forward to another woman when I was done.
An interesting collection of short stories all told from the perspective of women. A chocolate box of psychedelic sorority!
Interesting and thought provoking, there will probably be a story to resonate with everyone.
Me? I'm the woman talking to the duck....

marleed I found this book fascinating. I took it a parable a day because they were so quirky and I wanted to sit with each story. 5y

This is a thought-provoking collection of parables themed around women and how they deal with whatever life hands them. Titles like “The Woman Who Slowly Disappeared” and “The Woman Who Cherry-Picked” hint at the tone of these stories. Borrowed, but I‘d like a print copy for myself someday!
(Note: I haven‘t read this author before).

ValerieAndBooks @marleed ‘s review is what prompted me to pick this up 👍! 5y
marleed Oh I‘m so happy you read it. Is so wacky, and I had to take it slow to asorb and ponder it, but I really liked it. A couple times since I‘ve even inwardly smiled at the literal translations from conversation I‘ve been in. Knowing they hadn‘t and wouldn‘t read the book, I kept my smile to myself - which, come to think of it, could be another story! 5y
marleed I read her first book when it came out 15 years ago, PS I love you. At the time she was the daughter of the PM of Ireland. By the time it was adapted to movie, I‘d become a young widow myself so it had special significance. So now I even follow her on Instagram :) 5y

ValerieAndBooks @marleed I feel like I‘ll be the same way now, inwardly smiling at situations that the stories refer to. Another reason why I want a hard copy is so that I can show it to my daughter (21 years old). I want her to be a strong woman (roar!). 5y
ValerieAndBooks @marleed so this author means something to you 💖. I definitely will seek her out! 5y
marleed Oh I hope your daughter roars through life! ...Yes, she‘s written many books in the last 15 year but PS I love you was her first. This summer, 15 years later, she wrote its sequel. It was fun to watch her in Dublin on Instagram on release day hiding newly signed copies in public locations! I wonder if authors do that - so cute to see her so excited. 5y

This book is so wonderfully wacky and weird - and literal. I‘m not sure if I‘d call it 30 short stories so much as 30 parables. Maybe self-help. Maybe Cecelia‘s Fairy Tales for Grown-ass Women. ... I recommend this as a book savored over days one story at a time

ValerieAndBooks Looks good. Just requested this as a e-book from the library! 5y
marleed @ValerieAndBooks oh I hope you enjoy it. I typically read a book straight through but these stories or so wacky that I opted to change my reading style. So that I could sit with each story, I read a story at a time at 4 different points throughout the day. 5y
ValerieAndBooks I just read the first one and was like, wow. I think your suggestion to space them out is a good idea! 5y
marleed @ValerieAndBooks Haha! I couldn‘t read them altogether. But when I let space come between each story I found that I really thought about them. 5y

What an odd book. This was recommended to me by @aliincornwall my lovely sister. I liked that it was short stories so easy to read and I get that they have a moral to them.... but they are just odd!

It struggled with this one to start with and thought it was really odd and bizarre but the more I read the more I loved the little short stories. Some made me proper laugh out loud, others made me cry and the odd when I just thought was odd. Overall though a really good read. I think my most memorable and the one that stayed with me was the cherry picker and the funniest was the world swallowing women up.

Makes me wish I had my own private room to roar in. A great collection of very relatable short stories, each centred around a different woman. I felt it had a good level of representation, and pushed at the stereotypes we and society set for us.

TheHungryBookworms This is on my wish list. I was planning on buying it but need it to know what others thought about it before I did. 5y
laurieluna @TheHungryBookworms well I really enjoyed it. Some of the stories read like parables, and she avoids naming any of the main female characters which is a perfect touch. Makes them all the more relatable when they don't have a name I think. 5y

I can think of only three times in my life that I immediately restarted a book I just finished because I did not want it to end. I'll tag those books in the comments.

Let me introduce you to the fourth book. It is one of the best short story collections I have read, and let me tell you, I have a thing for short stories.

Clare-Dragonfly I was late to work last week (thankfully I have a flexible schedule) because I randomly picked up The Refrigerator Monologues from the shelf and started rereading bits. 5y

In this outstanding short story collection, Cecelia Ahern takes societal expectations of women and tips them on their head with a thread of magical realism. Her vision of society is sly and astute, whether it be a trophy wife physically living on a shelf or a woman who is actually unraveling. My favorite by far is the man forced to face a panel of women to request a vasectomy and attempt to obtain agency over his own body. Tremendous.

This collection features 30 short stories, all titled "The Woman Who . . . " and with a fairytale-like tone delves into a specific situation that a woman might find herself. Enraging for the reminder of daily struggles and prejudice, but ultimately uplifting for the empowering messages. I particularly liked "The Woman Who Protected the Gonads" which turns the table on the discussion about female reproductive rights. #netgalley

I‘ve always loved short stories for how they tease your mind and then leave you to colour in your own canvas. Ahern writes in her usual playful style that makes even heavier topics easy to digest. Thoroughly enjoyable and real!

4/5🌟 A Poignant and Captivating Story Collection.
These stories are essentially a celebration of women, and capturing what it means to be female. The women in these stories are written so vividly, so relatable. These stories range from thought provoking, to humorous, to sad, to uplifting. And all are uniquely written in lyrical prose. There were a couple stories I didnt like as much as others but overall enjoyed it and found it well done.

It is set in the present alongside the movement of #MeToo, and covers what it feels like to be a woman nowadays, a wife, mother or struggling as a refugee too. It touches on the issues of equality and justice.

It‘s an easy book to read as each tale is short to dip into in a busy day, with plenty of humour. A good, thought provoking read.
