I like the premise of a weird family accident prone just for a month per year, and the characters are likeable but the explanations are too déjà vus for me

Decided to bail on my last recommendation from #MyTBR from book riot. I just couldn‘t do angsty YA.

This book has an interesting premise, but I can‘t do contemporary YA right now.

I was a little annoyed all my recs fell under the YA category when I thought I was pretty specific I didn‘t like YA. I made to sure to be even more specific in my feedback. So we‘ll see what happens next quarter.

Lauren890 I had a similar experience. Last quarter, in my feedback I said “0-1 YA picks please!” and they listened. Good luck! 4y
Laughterhp @Lauren890 I just got my picks for this quarter and they all look pretty good! So I‘m excited. Also, random but your last name is my maiden name. ☺️ 4y
Lauren890 @Laughterhp Funny! It‘s my married name so I‘ve only had it 7 years, but it doesn‘t seem very common. 4y

A weird, yet addictive book. A fairly quick read especially since at times I couldn't put it down. The writing was beautiful and it helped hide yet highlight some of the more difficult topics that eventually came up. I can see how this book might not be for everyone but I find myself intrigued to check out more of this author's work.

A beautifully haunting, elegantly creepy and deliciously unsettling story.

Moira Fowley-Doyle has crafted a richly atmospheric setting blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, creating a perfect level of dark and whimsy. The rhythm and cadence of the lyrical prose is eerily hypnotic, almost sad, setting an enchantingly chilling tone that fills you with a sense of dread. Entrancing and addictive read.

Another 5-star read for me! I have read all three books by Moira Fowler-Doyle, and I found myself completely immersed each time. The characters are interesting, there are multiple twists (some I see coming, some I don‘t), and I love the magical realism. I hope to read more by this author.

Week 1 Update for #BFCr4:
🏋🏻‍♀️ Went to the gym 1/3 times. However, I did do three short hikes while visiting family in Blowing Rock, NC, so I feel like I hit this.
🧘🏻‍♀️ Practiced yoga 1/3 times. Missed one of my classes due to family trip mentioned above.
🍝 Ate more than my goal of home cooked meals!
📚 Read 7/16 books! The tagged book was a pretty good gothic YA - perfect for October.

So, I accidentally let my Ruined audiobook expire on Overdrive! 😱 And now someone‘s checked it out! So, now I‘m listening to The Accident Season and loving it! The Irish narrator is lovely to listen to and really sets the tone for the story! Still on the fence about audiobooks, and still prefer to read an actual book, but with narrators like this one I may become an audio devotee! #audiolaundry #funfun

brittanyreads Will be sure to finish this one though!! 7y

This book is eerie and mystical and wonderful. I would love to see a movie adaptation but I don't know that it could truly do this book justice! I'll have to get my hands on the audiobook because I think this is really the kind of story that gets even better when it's read to you. I definitely recommend this, especially if you're interested in magical realism.

Book 99. I absolutely loved this book. It‘s really hard to describe but it‘s magic, pure magic and mystery and just gorgeous.

“So let‘s raise our glasses to the accident season,
To the river beneath us where we sink our souls,
To the bruises and secrets, to the ghosts in the ceiling,
One more drink for the watery road.”

IheartYA I liked Spellbook for the Lost even more! 7y

Man, I absolutely love Moira's writing! I'm so disappointed that I've read the only two books she has published. I'm not a big fan of magic realism or contemporary but the writing is just so good and the characters are flawed and diverse either in race or sexual orientation.

This was a bit more of a "wtf" book than Spellbook of the Lost and Found but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm a sucker for books set in Ireland and with magic apparently.

Itchyfeetreader Sounds interesting 7y

This book has some beautiful and eerie quotes in it and I thought the premise was really interesting. The execution was a little off. This book was a mess. There is a mixture of reality and fantasy and I'm still not 100% how much of which was which. There was a lot of kissing and strange relationships. The "surprise" ending was a bit of a let down and didn't answer very many questions. I am still confused!

There were a couple unanswered questions that made this be a "so-so" for me. But overall it was a fun YA read playing on the changeling folklore. It's right up my alley with the weird & magical stuff. There's one month where Cara and her family are incredibly accident prone. It might be one of the worst years yet and Cara will learn the hard way the history of the accident season.
