A ragtag band of explorers are looking to make the biggest score in the galaxy in an epic science fiction adventure from the national bestselling author of the Linesman series. On this space jump, no one is who they seem . . . Captain Hammond Roystan is a simple cargo runner who has stumbled across the find of a lifetime: the Hassim, a disabled exploration ship--and its valuable record of unexplored worlds. His junior engineer, Josune Arriola, said her last assignment was in uncharted rim. But she is decked out in high-level bioware that belies her humble backstory. A renowned body-modification artist, Nika Rik Terri has run afoul of clients who will not take no for an answer. She has to flee off-world, and she is dragging along a rookie modder, who seems all too experienced in weapons and war . . . Together this mismatched crew will end up on one ship, hurtling through the lawless reaches of deep space with Roystan at the helm. Trailed by nefarious company men, they will race to find the most famous lost world of all--and riches beyond their wildest dreams . . .

The score of a lifetime, & it will take a rag tag group racing against a powerful company to get there first.

There was a lot I liked. Found family, space heists, wide expansive worlds, corporations are the bad guys. But we didn‘t actually get to the heist, it felt like we only got the first half of the story, the romance felt forced, & I‘m not a big fan of futuristic sci fi that tells me that fatness shouldn‘t exist. 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

BookmarkTavern Nika‘s chapters deal with her fleeing from a past abusive relationship; chapters 37 and 39 contain instances of domestic abuse 2w
Bookzombie “I‘m not a big fan of futuristic sci fi that tells me that fatness shouldn‘t exist.” Ugh. Me either. I didn‘t have this on my radar, but I‘m definitely not stacking now. Thanks for the review! 2w

BookmarkTavern @Bookzombie Yeah, it was mostly just Nika‘s chapters, but I got very tired of her internal thoughts talking about she wanted to put various people into her machine to help them lose weight. 2w
julesG Nika's thoughts about what she'd change on which person made me roll my eyes. Yes, she's an artist and as such she sees how she could use her craft on the people she meets, but the fat shaming was too much and too often. I'd rather have her go on about how to recreate an interesting nose or brow ridge. 2w
BookmarkTavern @julesG Right! Like every time she got excited about a really unique hair color or patterning on the skin, I was excited too! 2w

Here are a few questions to think on for our December selection, Stars Uncharted by S.K. Dunstall.

1. A lot of concepts/technologies were presented (aka body modification) that where farfetched. Do you think the author handled it well?
2. Most everyone had something they were escaping. Do you think this over complicated the plot?
3. What worked and didn't work for you in this book?

Feel free to discuss anything. These questions are just to...

CatLass007 This has been an insane month. I haven‘t participated in any of my buddy reads. I have the books I just haven‘t had the time. I‘ll probably work on the unread December books and the January books at the same time. 3w
TheSpineView @CatLass007 I get it. December was very busy. You are welcome to come back and comment at a later date. 3w
Ruthiella I felt the body modification details were too descriptive and unnecessary, complicating a pretty simple story m. And the bad guys were only as bad (or as inept) as the plot needed them to be. For me, personally, there was a better book in there. On the plus side, I did like the characters and their distinct personalities. 3w
julesG What @Ruthiella said. 😜 3w
CatLass007 Thank you.💝 3w
Karisimo I liked the characters a lot too! 3w
julesG I would have liked to see more of the titular uncharted stars. I expected more space exploration. 3w
TheSpineView @julesG I had not thought about it. However, now that you point it out there was a lack of exploration. There was so much stuff going on, if the author threw anything else at the reader it would have gotten lost. 3w
Larkken I thought the body mod stuff was a unique way to scifi the plot, but i agree that I wanted to see more of the universe like @julesG Can a book be overly action packed? 😂 I think that I approved of the body mod bc there was a method/science/whatever to it that made sense, while the search for a mineral that only existed on some mythical world did not. Why couldn't they just manufacture more? Obv their chemistry should be up to it. 3w
BookmarkTavern I really found the science part of the mods fascinating, especially the discussions between Nika and Snow about different schools of thought in how to mod. But it was disappointing that the text seemed to have a very specific view towards weight. 2w
TheSpineView @BookmarkTavern I had not thought about weight. However, now that you point out, the narrow view is apparent. 2w

#LitsySciFiBookClub #SeriesLove2024 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

At first I thought this was a slow read, but then I was drawn into the found family vibes and needed to know how they would get out of the pickle they'd got themselves into.

I will probably read the next book in the series/duology soon.

Andrew65 Excellent 🎄☃️🎅🏼 1mo
TheSpineView Awesome! 1mo
DogMomIrene Excellent! I‘m probably not going to get to this one this year, but I‘m still wanting to read it. 4w

#weekendreads @rachelsbrittain

Finished "The Magpie Lord" yesterday. First in a paranormal M/M #HistoricalRomance trilogy, with some ?️

Today I'm oscillating between the third Emily Wilde #eARC and the #LitsySciFiBookClub pick for December.

Read this for #litsyscifibookclub I enjoyed the mix of characters. The plot was fast-paced and included a some mystery and a fun twist! The world of body modification was well-developed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

113/150 I'm glad I read this. I don't need to be starting a new series, but this was a lot of fun. The "rag-tag gang of misfits" is one of my favorite tropes, and I liked all the members of this crew, they all had distinct personalities, quirks and special skills. Also, although its Book 1, it doesn't leave you with a cliffhanger, so you can stop and enjoy one adventure with this crew. 4⭐⭐⭐⭐?
Book 113 finished for #Readaway2024

RamsFan1963 BTW as a side note, as much as I appreciate that Spotify now has audiobooks, the 15 hour limit is a pain sometimes. I would have had this book finished 3 days ago, but they cut me off with 13 minutes to go 😡, and I had to wait 3 days for my subscription to renew. 1mo
AllDebooks @RamsFan1963 the Spotify cut off is annoying as hell. How many of their books are longer than 15 hours? I can get through 10 audiobooks a month. Then they try to sell you more reading time, which is only another 8 hours. Jog on pal, jog on! 1mo

AllDebooks @RamsFan1963 13 minutes to go would have pushed me over the edge 🫣😅 1mo
RamsFan1963 @AllDebooks I was seriously tempted to pay to refill the time, but an extra $12.99 for 13 minutes seemed a bit excessive. Yes the time does roll over to the next month, but with my usual renewal only 3 days away I chose to stick it out. 1mo
DogMomIrene Ohhh, excited to read this one. I love the rag tag crew trope is one of my favorites too! 1mo
DieAReader 🎉Excellent finish! I‘ve never tried to audiobook on Spotify🧐😉 1mo
RamsFan1963 @DieAReader If you have a Premium Spotify account, I recommend it, they had a good selection of titles, even with the stupid 15 hour cut off. 1mo
DieAReader @RamsFan1963 🤓Thanks! I‘ll check it out for sure. 1mo

repost for @TheSpineView:

The December selection for #LitsySciFiBookClub #LSFBC is Stars Uncharted. My local library has the digital and audio book both available. Currently, the Kindle price is $7.99 in the US. It was published in 2018 so maybe there are a few used copies available if you prefer a physical book and your local library doesn't carry it. Happy Reading!

CatLass007 Looks like a fun book! I can‘t get it electronically via my library. So I‘ll have to be selective about how I use my Audible credits. I thought this month‘s selection was quite good. 2mo

I wrote a brief review of Dunstall‘s #scifi novel for Seattle Book Review: https://seattlebookreview.com/product/stars-uncharted/

This was a fun & compelling story without being too over the top as so much hardcore #sciencefiction can be

For my book club on Habitica. So far it's entertaining but not in any way new or original in feel? Feels like it's riding on the coat tails of Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, Firefly, etc etc etc.

Nika Rik Terri is on the run from a company that wants to use her body exchanger. She was planning on leaving here abusive boyfriend, so this just gives her one more reason to run. Meanwhile, Josune Arriola is on a ship with Captain Hammond Roystan on a special mission, and runs afoul of the same company. Inventive SF with shades of Firefly, but the plot becomes chase scene after chase scene, and I just wanted to see a little more development.

Awesome. This book has a Firefly feel of found family and scrapes that require blowing things up. There was just enough action throughout the story for it never to get slow. Also, enough character to building to feel invested. The end left felt satisfying but left enough loose threads for a series. #FirsttoRead #ARC #2018christyread
