The Gown
The Gown: A Novel | Jennifer Robson
From the internationally bestselling author of Somewhere in France comes an enthralling historical novel about one of the most famous wedding dresses of the twentieth centuryQueen Elizabeths wedding gownand the fascinating women who made it. Millions will welcome this joyous event as a flash of color on the long road we have to travel. Sir Winston Churchill on the news of Princess Elizabeths forthcoming wedding London, 1947: Besieged by the harshest winter in living memory, burdened by onerous shortages and rationing, the people of postwar Britain are enduring lives of quiet desperation despite their nations recent victory. Among them are Ann Hughes and Miriam Dassin, embroiderers at the famed Mayfair fashion house of Norman Hartnell. Together they forge an unlikely friendship, but their nascent hopes for a brighter future are tested when they are chosen for a once-in-a-lifetime honor: taking part in the creation of Princess Elizabeths wedding gown. Toronto, 2016: More than half a century later, Heather Mackenzie seeks to unravel the mystery of a set of embroidered flowers, a legacy from her late grandmother. How did her beloved Nan, a woman who never spoke of her old life in Britain, come to possess the priceless embroideries that so closely resemble the motifs on the stunning gown worn by Queen Elizabeth II at her wedding almost seventy years before? And what was her Nans connection to the celebrated textile artist and holocaust survivor Miriam Dassin? With The Gown, Jennifer Robson takes us inside the workrooms where one of the most famous wedding gowns in history was created. Balancing behind-the-scenes details with a sweeping portrait of a society left reeling by the calamitous costs of victory, she introduces readers to three unforgettable heroines, their points of view alternating and intersecting throughout its pages, whose lives are woven together by the pain of survival, the bonds of friendship, and the redemptive power of love.

Thanks to @Clwojick @TheAromaofBooks for September‘s #ISpyBingo prompts that lead me to this incredible HF novel❣️I absolutely loved it ♥️Set in dual timelines - 1947, London on the cusp of Queen Elizabeth‘s wedding and 2016, a young woman researching her grandmother‘s past. Even though parts of the story are a bit predictable, I was completely consumed with the story of Ann, Miriam and Heather. Great audio narration 🎧#pearls #WeddingDress

An engaging and quick read.

Before she passed, my Nana told my stepmom that this book reminded her of her life in England just after the war, before she came to Canada. She so identified with Ann's character (thankfully, not with the circumstances surrounding Ann's decisions).

It would not have been a book I'd pick up otherwise, but it was lovely to sit with these women and think of Nana.

BookLineNSinker My grandma, who recently passed, was also from England and moved to the States after the war with my grandfather who was a soldier 1y
lynneamch Yes. Reminded me of my Gram, too. She was apprenticed as a dressmaker in Cornwall when she was 16 and came to the US in the 1920s. 1y

This is a photograph of the 1947 wedding gown of Queen Elizabeth. It was hand embroidered with symbolic motifs. This book tell the story of two young women who worked on the embroidery. The design was top secret, and there was a frenzy to discover any information. Behind the scenes look at the world of couture, the healing power of art, and the strength of women‘s friendships. Meticulously researched.

Although the main characters of this book were fictional, they did allow me a glimpse of the work and detail that went into the creation of Princess Elizabeth‘s wedding gown. Also of interest was this time period following WWII as England was still living through austere times. I could see the wedding being a welcome distraction at the time or a show of extravagance when many were struggling. Altogether it was an interesting read.

I really liked this. I wasn‘t sure what I was going to think, as I‘m not much for fashion, so I think if there had been more focus on the gown than there was (and all the details in creating it), I might not have liked it as much. But, I liked all the additional stories of Ann, Miriam, and Heather. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin They all had a romantic interest, and as Miriam got to know Ann better, more of her own past in France was revealed. I did, at one point, stop to look up a photo of the gown itself, and even looked for a video of Princess Elizabeth‘s and Prince Philip‘s wedding. 4y

The story follows two women that embroidered Princess Elizabeth‘s wedding gown, and that‘s pretty much it. I was hoping for some input from the princess or more about the gown, but no. It held my interest, but it isn‘t going to be memorable. So it‘s a bit difficult to rate, maybe a so-so pick? 2/5💍s

Wife I found it not realistic that Ann never contacted Miriam after moving to Canada. Close friends would have written a letter here and there. 🤨 4y

At the start, I enjoyed this story, but when the love stories took over I got bored. The book is also more about the ficional characters, than about the actual wedding. That actually plays a little part in the whole story. The details about the making of the dress are specially nice if you're interested in clothes/sewing.

Disclaimer: I‘m obsessed w/ the royal family & how fundamentally demented the whole institution is so that greatly influences my review. 😂

“The Gown” is really well researched historical fiction & I enjoyed reading it but it never quite lived up to the drama it purports to have on its back cover. None of the women feel fully fleshed out either. But I can‘t commend the author enough for the amount of research this must have taken.

I love The Crown and some royal fashion so was looking forward to this story of two seamstresses who worked on the Queen‘s wedding gown. But...hmmm. The story of Miriam, who escaped the Holocaust, is thoughtful, yet overall this is easy reading that drifts into predictable writing too often for me to have loved it. But the wedding dress detail was fascinating and I Googled the wedding photos about a hundred times while reading to spot details👇

JillR And I have to say, the cover? The US version gets the gown itself, but this UK edition 🤷‍♀️. I do judge a book by its cover... 5y

Full disclosure: I had put Jennifer Robson's The Gown on hold thinking that it was nonfiction. Huh. It's not. I didn't love it any less, but my expectations *did* shift when I began the book and quickly realized that I was reading historical fiction.⠀

Anyway, I love series like The Crown and Downton Abbey, shows that both delve beneath the glamorous surface of the British monarchic system in one way or the other. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod The Gown does that, as well, with its three distinct protagonists. In this case, for two of the three perspectives it's after the end of World War II in 1947, and England is still recovering. Ann grew up in England and has worked as an embroiderer for eleven years for Norman Hartnell, who often designs for the Queen and her family. Ann, alone except for her widowed sister-in-law, takes joy in the creativity and satisfaction of her job, ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod feeling as if she is contributing meaningfully to her society. The second point of view comes from Miriam Dassin, an immigrant from France who is still recovering from her time in a concentration camp and the loss of her entire family. Finally, in the modern day, there is Heather, a journalist who is grieving the loss of her grandmother, a woman she realizes had a mysterious past.⠀⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod This was a quick read for me, and I really appreciated the new angles that Robson offers: I've never thought about the people who make the dresses that make the upper class look so glamorous, so reading about their back stories was fascinating. I also liked the way that the three alternating perspectives created a sense of mystery around the connection between the three woman. ⬇️ 5y
See All 6 Comments
UnabridgedPod And reading about recovery from World War II rather than about the war itself meant that my WWII fatigue wasn't triggered. Great historical read.⠀

Side note: I couldn't resist photographing this lovely book beside one of my own wedding photos, so you can see Kirk and me in July 2004--we were babies! (Okay, not really, but it seems like that now.)
5y
AmyG I just started this., ha...because reading 3 other books wasn‘t enough. The 1947 parts have a real The Crown feel to it. I am only 50 pages in, but really enjoying it. (edited) 5y
