As Long as We Both Shall Live
As Long as We Both Shall Live: A Novel | Joann Chaney
49 posts | 39 read | 67 to read
What happens when youre really, truly done making your marriage work? You cant be married to someone without sometimes wanting to bash them over the head... As Long As We Both Shall Live is JoAnn Chaneys wicked, masterful examination of a marriage gone very wrong, a marriage with lots of secrets... My wife! I think shes dead! Matt frantically tells park rangers that he and his wife, Marie, were hiking when she fell off a cliff into the raging river below. They start a search, but they arent hopeful: no one could have survived that fall. It was a tragic accident. But Matts first wife also died in suspicious circumstances. And when the police pull a body out of the river, they have a lot more questions for Matt. Detectives Loren and Spengler want to know if Matt is a grieving, twice-unlucky husband or a cold-blooded murderer. They dig into the couples lives to see what they can unearth. And they find that loves got teeth, its got claws, and once it hitches you to a person, its tough to rip yourself free. So what happens when youre done making it work?

Bailedbailed

I‘m trying to be better at bailing on books I‘m not that crazy about or are ‘just okay.‘ As Long As We Both Shall Live by Joann Chaney started out well. Two timelines and a husband likely killing his wife. The lives of the investigating detectives became part of the story, it got confusing, and less interesting for me. A little more than 25% in and I decided it was time to move on.

I really enjoyed this outing from JoAnn Chaney. It's twisted, delicious, really messed up, and I can't wait to see what she writes next.

This one flew under my radar when it came out, but it‘s a good summer/beach read, so I guess my timing worked out. The couple in this book complements each other‘s terrible character flaws, keeping you wondering what they‘ll do next.

Initially I wasn‘t feeling this book...too many POVs that didn‘t connect well, a main plot that seemed a bit dull, and some descriptive writing that wasn‘t working for me. I stuck with it because it‘s an ARC from NetGalley and I‘m so glad I did. It took about halfway in (too long) but suddenly the story took off and got really good with interesting and unexpected twists and turns. Ultimately I enjoyed it quite a bit! Happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Nope, nope, nope 👎🏼

Not sure why some of the dialogue was so crass - it felt immature. Maybe I‘m not the right demographic.

readordierachel I was pretty underwhelmed by the first in this series. Don't think I will be picking this one up. 6y
JennyM @readordierachel I pretty much tutted the whole way through. Was not good for me. Although it is getting pretty good reviews...so maybe I‘m just grouchy 😉 6y

Erinreadsthebooks I hated, loathed, abhorred the book so much. The unnecessarily vile language was too much. I‘m no saint and love a good cuss word, but this book was wayyyy over the top 👎👎 (edited) 6y
JennyM @Erinreadsthebooks I‘m totally with you. It wasn‘t the swearing so much, just the stupid phrases that sounded like something a teenager would say. Glad to have your company on this one 😘 6y

Well that was full of twists and turns. Fun read and great writing. Story of a couple who have been married 20 years. The wife goes missing the husband is suspect. Lots of twists and turns to get to the truth. Characters were a bit off (overdone and underdone depending on the character) and i figured it out kind of early but i still enjoyed the story. I give it 4screwed up marriages out of 5. Lol. 💏💏💏💏

I can't 🤦‍♀️ When she starts referencing the cop's former nicknames, my eyeroll was intense and it was (past) time to move on. I gave it the good college try, but when I found myself reading words I've never seen in print and haven't heard since high school, I knew it was time to move on. Too many books out there to stick around and be grossed out repeatedly by this one✌️#byefelicia.

Y'all...??? I don't know if I can make it. This is supposedly set in 2018, Jill is not being interrogated, and the cop just randomly showed up to look at the suspect's office. "Baloney pony" Are we for real? WTH?! ?‍♀️

mrsmarch So after reading your posts on this book, I had to look up the publisher. Because not even the official blurb of this book sounded appetizing. It appears to be published by Flatiron, a division of Macmillan? And from Flatiron‘s website, their philosophy, “publish a relatively small number of titles so that each book could be supported by an extraordinary amount of editorial attention, marketing, and publicity.” Somewhere, somebody missed the boat 6y
Erinreadsthebooks @mrsmarch That's really interesting. I wonder if she was misled by an 'extraordinary amount of...attention' because these weirdly stupid sexual references fly in from left field. They're so unnecessary to the plot. Overall, I'm enjoying the book but I keep getting blindsided by these phrases. For instance, the female character can't sleep and goes outside at night. It's chilly and the author writes that "her nipples twisted and hardened." Why?!? 6y
See All 8 Comments
Erinreadsthebooks 👆🏼that nipple info immediately follows the author telling us there's goosebumps on her arms. We get it, she's cold. 6y
whatsthEStorey Umm “twisted”?? 🤔 This leads me to wonder if the author has ever been in possession of their own pair of nipples! That is the worst description ever! 😂😂 6y
Erinreadsthebooks @whatsthEStorey Right?! So strange. Maybe possibly in a romance or Fifty Shades-esque book, but there's not even an inkling of a relationship brewing in this book. I don't understand 🤦‍♀️ (edited) 6y
CoverToCoverGirl 😳😂 6y
mrsmarch @Erinreadsthebooks I read thru the editor bios at Flatiron and there are some bizarre ones, does it say anywhere in the acknowledgments who her editor was? She might very well have been misled by an editor who thought this was a cool thing. I encountered plenty of editors who thought shock was cool when I was in digital literary mags. 6y

I can't figure out what the author is doing when she throws in idiotic phrases like this. The chapters are third person, but occasionally she seems to take on the character's voice despite it not being written in first person. It's incredibly off-putting, especially considering the extraneous storyline associated with this character. I'm halfway through, and I'll give this book the rest of the night to see if I need to just jump ship 🏃‍♀️🚢 ✌️

I‘m pleased to report that despite several opportunities, my partner has not yet pushed me off the edge of a cliff. But the twists and turns in this had my heart racing as fast as it was when we were standing on the edge!

CouronneDhiver Is this a novel or true crime? I feel like the story is super familiar... Henthorns... or something like that. 6y

“The secrets two people keep from the rest of the world, that‘s what makes a marriage”
Did Matt kill his wife? That is the question we are posed with at the beginning of this book. There are several plot lines and some expected and unexpected twists. It was an entertaining psychological thriller.

I liked this except for the side story about the detective. Maybe it was the audio but I hated the language he used. Not in a way that I was offended- I thought it was annoying. I thought it might be an issue of a female author trying to sound like how she thinks men talk to each other? anyone else think that? Am I just getting old???

Really liked this one! A lot. I was easily able to figure out the plot (very reminiscent of Gone Girl) but I didn't care. The structure of the way this one is told is great and the characters, especially the homicide detectives, are really well done. A very good book club book choice for us. 👍

I finished this one in two days!! It completely materialized the potential I saw in Chaney‘s first book a few years ago. The story is inventive and fast-paced, the writing is snappy, and her characters, which could be caricatural and annoying, are eccentric and interesting. She even brought back a character from her first book and gave him so much depth! All around, a great thriller, and I already can‘t wait for her next book.

While hiking in Rocky Mtn National Park, Matt‘s wife slips and falls from a cliff. It‘s a tragic accident. Or is it? Turns out she‘s Matt‘s second wife. And Matt‘s first wife is dead as well.

This one‘s due out in Jan and she‘ll be promoting it in the Denver area! As for me, I‘m not actually hangry right now but I do have some swollen feet and I‘m pretty exhausted at 34 weeks.
