Russka: The Novel of Russia | Edward Rutherfurd
"Impressive." THE WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD Spanning 1800 years of Russia's history, people, poltics, and culture, Edward Rurtherford, author of the phenomenally successful SARUM: THE NOVEL OF ENGLAND, tells a grand saga that is as multifaceted as Russia itself. Here is a story of a great civilization made human, played out through the lives of four families who are divided by ethnicity but united in shaping the destiny of their land. "Rutherford's RUSSKA succeeds....[He] can take his place among an elite cadre of chroniclers such as Harold Lamb, Maurice Hindus and Henri Troyat." SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE From the Paperback edition.

Day 17: I‘m following the idea to post a book from my tbr list from @StaceyKondla and @Cortg

No description or reason for wanting to read it is necessary if you want to join along. #tbrpile

Cortg I have never read an E.R. book but I have 2 of them on my bookshelf waiting to be tackled! 4y
Texreader @Cortg I‘ve read a couple and they‘re very good. Just long. 4y
LauraBrook I‘m about halfway through the tagged now and am enjoying it. As it stands, I‘m going to keep my eyes open for another title of his once used bookstores open back up again. 4y
See All 10 Comments
Sace I read Sarum forever ago and don't remember anything about it! (Which I assume is better then remembering that I hated it?) 4y
Cortg @Texreader I love a good chunkster! I‘m hoping to get a few big ones in before the end of the year! 4y
Texreader @LauraBrook I always see his books at the used bookstore so hopefully when the day comes, it‘ll be there waiting for you! I‘ve read his Sarum and The Forest and liked them. 4y
Texreader @Sace Same! I‘ve read it; I remember liking the books I‘ve read by him but that‘s about all I can remember. 4y
Texreader @Cortg I love the feel of living in a story. That‘s what happens to me in chunksters. It becomes such a part of your life. And then it‘s even better when they have sequels. BUT they tie up all my reading time (I‘m a fairly slow reader) and I want to succeed on my challenges. Maybe I‘ll make 2021 my chunkster year and give up challenges. 4y
Cortg I completely agree! I‘m way ahead of schedule with my Goodreads challenge after being home for 2.5 months and book club is on hold due to Covid so now is a good time for me to dive into a couple chunksters! 4y
Texreader @Cortg I can‘t wait to see what you pick! 4y

Still plugging away at this monster, good but author adds a ton of detail, 800 plus pages, also reading Lost Girls of Paris as a break.

I've wanted to read for some time, and since I'm in recovery mode and not able to do much besides stumble around with my walker, I think this will keep me from doing something I shouldn't be doing! Thank you @Lynnsoprano

Freespirit Edward Rutherford is one of my favourite writers. I haven't read this one. I shall be interested in your review😊 6y
Lynnsoprano Glad to be of service 😂 6y
Lynnsoprano @Freespirit It‘s one of his earliest. My favorite Rutherford book is Sarum, but this is a close second. 6y

I received a beautiful awesome surprise today from @Lynnsoprano . I've wanted to read this for forever! Thank you soooo much, you are too kind! #litsylove

Lynnsoprano I read this shortly before we left for six months in Prague, when my husband had sabbatical leave there. His background is Ukrainian, so he read this first, but for me this opened up a new world. I think it‘s one of Rutherford‘s best. Enjoy! And I‘ll send you a long email tomorrow 😄 6y

Mehso-so

This wasn't as good as yours others, but that could be due to the fact I listened to it instead of read it. I like learning about history this way in his books. Still, Paris is his best so far.

A good Pile-o-books haul from a used book store. Some of these were gifts, Russka was so good I can hardly stand it, and I still have Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell on my tbr shelf. I should really get to it, because I‘m absolutely sure I would love it.

DebReads4fun Russka is one of my favorite books! Welcome to Litsy! 7y
RadicalReader @FriggTheBookWyrm What do you think of Litsy so far? 7y
FriggTheBookWyrm @RadicalReader I like Litsy. I like having my feed all full of pictures and reviews of books. I am not a big fan however, of all the welcome wagon comments on my posts. The first one, great, thank you. But after that? It‘s my third day on the site, and almost every comment on my posts has been “welcome to Litsy” and I don‘t like it. I feel singled out. Also, your comment about my appearance on my Dracula post made me very uncomfortable. 7y
RadicalReader @FriggTheBookWyrm I can understand how that can make you feel not a fan of the plethora of welcome posts. Can most definitely be unsettling, I apologize for making you feel unsettled with my comment about your appearance on your Dracula photo just was trying to compliment your appearance but I understand it may not be taken the way it‘s intended 7y
FriggTheBookWyrm @RadicalReader Thank you. I didn‘t think you had any bad intentions, but your comment hit me as over the top and I felt weird about it. I‘d rather connect over books, not looks! 7y
KateFulfordAuthor If you need another recommendation, may I point you to my People‘s Book Prize nominated debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 6y

This was loaned to me by a friend who knows I love to read. I know it means a lot to him, and I am honored that he wanted to share it with me. And then, it is a chunker that I would never have chosen for myself. Planning to alternate reading with my other books. #deweysreadathon

ReadingEnvy I've read and enjoyed other novels by this author but haven't read this one! I'll look for your review. 7y

Andrew65 I want to read Edward Rutherfurd, they are big books telling big stories! 7y
DivineDiana @Andrew65 This is my introduction to the author! 7y
Bluebird I hope you enjoy! I agree about breaking it up with lighter reading. My favorites are London and Sarum. (edited) 7y
DebReads4fun It is an excellent book! 7y
DivineDiana @Bluebird Thanks for the advice! 7y
batsy What @Andrew65 said! 😁 I've heard about this one. Will keep an eye out for your review. 7y

My Edward Rutherford collection is growing.
I love his books. The history of these great cities are captured brilliantly thru the generational stories of fictional families.
A great blend of historical facts and fiction.

Only on Chapter 6 but am calling this done. Way too many macho men for my liking. Also, extremely icky plot point of incest rape at one point.

Incest rape? Was that plot point REALLY necessary?

Well, this book certainly won't be a Pick. 😖

Foxyfictionista Oh dear... That's not good. 8y
rabbitprincess It is a short plot point but so gratuitous. 8y
Lynnsoprano It's been so long since I read it, I don't remember that. My husband loved that book, but I much prefer Sarum as Rutherford's best. 8y
rabbitprincess @Lynnsoprano It happens somewhere between the 1000s and 1200s. Definitely a small incident over the book. Hoping to forget it! Today my favourite Rutherfurd is The Rebels of Ireland. 8y
rabbitprincess I also liked Sarum, especially reading it right before our trip to Stonehenge and environs 😊 8y

#bookanddinner today: turkey burgers stuffed with goat cheese (YUM) and accompanied by, in my case, a pint of Ambear Red Ale, brewed by Cameron's Brewing of Oakville, Ontario.

brilliantglow There is so much awesome in this photo. Love Edward Rutherfurd. And local beers. And goat cheese (though I've never had a turkey burger). If you can find it, I recommend Dead Elephant. It's an English IPA made in St. Thomas ON by Railway City Brewing Company. It's very tasty. ❤ 8y
rabbitprincess @brilliantglow Oh hey I have had Dead Elephant before! 😄 That is awesome to know someone else knows about it! My MIL's family is from St. Thomas so I sampled the local brew a couple of times. Their Black Coal stout is good as well 🍺👍 8y
brilliantglow My husband and I live in London lol we are big fans of railway city. Love their black coal stout. I actually like to use Black Coal in my stew when I make it. 👍😃😃 8y
rabbitprincess @brilliantglow That sounds yummy!! And if you see any Cameron's Brewing at your LCBO, I recommend the Captain's Log (golden lager) especially. Crisp and refreshing. 😄 8y
brilliantglow Thank you! I will be keeping my eye out for it. Definitely sounds like a must try 8y
