Amber & Dusk
Amber & Dusk | Lyra Selene
Sylvie has always known she deserves more. Out in the permanent twilight of the Dusklands, her guardians called her power to create illusions a curse. But Sylvie knows it gives her a place in Coeur d'Or, the palais of the Amber Empress and her highborn legacies. So Sylvie sets off toward the Amber City, a glittering jewel under a sun that never sets, to take what is hers. But her hope for a better life is quickly dimmed. The empress invites her in only as part of a wicked wager among her powerful courtiers. Sylvie must assume a new name, Mirage, and begin to navigate secretive social circles and deadly games of intrigue in order to claim her spot. Soon it becomes apparent that nothing is as it appears and no one, including her cruel yet captivating sponsor, Sunder, will answer her questions. As Mirage strives to seize what should be her rightful place, she'll have to consider whether it is worth the price she must pay. An extraordinary, vividly rendered YA debut.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was honestly better than I expected! I didn‘t have high hopes for this one and it did still show its flaws. The main character does come off a bit as selfish, and can be unlikeable at times. I also could have gotten drunk if I took a shot for every time the author used the word “breast” in this book and it got annoying. Overall, this was a good read with a solid slow-burn romance.

#BookReport - A busy reading week - checked several books off this pile and am reading two more of them, plus The Seven Dials Mystery and So Long as You Both Shall Live. I've reorganized the order that I read books (again... it's a hobby haha) to try and balance out books that I own and books from the library.

The tagged book was my June #BookSpin - a 3* read for me. The sequel is coming from the library, but I'm not convinced I'm actually ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) going to read it, as Amber & Dusk was soooooooooooooo slow.

#bookspin #marchbookspin @TheAromaofBooks

I enjoyed this book but I didn't really love it. I just didn't much like the main character, Mirage. She's just too.. self-entitled? Too.. the world owes me this and that. I just didn't enjoy her character's personality I guess. The legacies were pretty neat though and Sunder's theory on how people's legacies manifest from who they are themselves was interesting.
3 1/2 stars

TheAromaofBooks This one is sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read. I feel like the self-entitled protagonist is something that has been trending in YA(ish) fantasy for a little while, and I don't like it. Still, the world-building sounds good!! 5y

Just about done with the tagged book for #BookSpin and then need to finish up The Unspoken Name for #lmpbc which I only have about 100 pages left for that. Been trying to read as much as possible for #stayhome24in48. Got a few ebooks I'm hoping to finish in the next few days as well

Amber & Dusk's #20 got picked for March's #BookSpin
And
Vicious's #7 got picked for the #DoubleSpin

Really looking forward to Vicious, I've heard so many great things about this book but it is Schwab, so I expect no less. I'm a little apprehensive about Amber & Dusk, I don't know why, the synopsis sounds pretty good, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Excited to begin another round of #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Amber & Dusk has been sitting on my shelf as well - I think I may try to read it this month for #MarchUnshelfing 5y
InBooksILive @TheAromaofBooks yeah I got it in one of the book boxes and just kept passing over it to read. It‘s finally it‘s time lol 5y
BookishMe I reread Vicious before starting Vengeful. It was even more enjoyable! Then again I am biased towards Schwab! 😍😍 5y

InBooksILive @BookishMe I totally am too! I haven't read anything by her I haven't loved. I've read her Shades of Magic series and the Monsters of Verity. Now I need to read the Villians. I cannot wait for that newest book of hers, the invisible life of addison larue. 5y
BookishMe Oh yes! The Monsters duology opened my eyes to urban fantasy 5y
InBooksILive @BookishMe same for me! 5y
BookishMe 👌🏾👌🏾 Happy BookSpinning. Will stay tuned for your review of Vicious ;D 5y

Avanders Hi yes! I get it :) 6y
GripLitGrl Yup I get it, I know @hermyknee is also a subscriber 6y
Chrissyreadit @Avanders @LibrarianRyan @hermyknee @bullbunny @That-Bookish-Hiker do you love it? Or it‘s just fun? (edited) 6y
hermyknee @Chrissyreadit @Endowarrior21 I love the boxes - they send great, high quality items, but I‘m so-so on their book choices of late. @LibrarianRyan and I were just discussing their lack of variety on my recent Four Dead Queens post. I‘m all about their special edition boxes though! I got The Wicked King one and it was amazing! 6y
bullbunny @Chrissyreadit Yeah overall interesting quality. I wish they'd bring back good vs evil box, that was fun. Curious about next month's theme. Haven't been too disappointed 6y
LibrarianRyan I love teen fantasy and sci if and it has been really heavy on that lately. I pay close attention to their hints about the book and double check my guess with the book box Sherlock‘s on FB so I don‘t buy duplicate books. As for the “things”. It depends. The last few have been great. I‘m drinking from my Never night travel mug right now. But they stick to the same fandoms over and over. And sometimes the things get repetitive. 6y
LibrarianRyan For example, at least 6 times a year they send a candle. About once a year I actually like the smell. Lots of book marks and fan art (even though that has been less so lately). I do t care for bath products, but that has also lessened. I now have a ton of pouches, but I do use them for everything. And I love the pillow covers. I use them on my dog beds. 6y
vkois88 No book boxes for me... I wish, but it's not in my budget right now. If it were, Owl Crate is probably the one I'd choose. And Jr. when LO is older 6y
hermyknee @LibrarianRyan I was definitely impressed with item quality in this month‘s box, too. I‘ve been using the travel mug daily! And the backpack. I agree about the candles, for sure. And I‘m not a fan of Sarah J Maas or Leah Bardugo, so that means A LOT of fan art / items don‘t resonate with me and I end up giving them away. I do wish they‘d diversify a bit more. Also, there won‘t be any Star Wars items in their “The Dark Side” Box 😱 6y
hermyknee I will say, it‘s a great box for new subscribers 6y
LibrarianRyan @hermyknee no SW items!!! Probably too expensive to license. 6y
hermyknee @LibrarianRyan they said it‘s because they never even thought of it (I watched their IG Live yesterday) because neither of them are Star Wars fans 😱😱😱😵 They‘ve included DC Funko Pops before (did you get the Eliza & Her Monsters Box??) and Harry Potter mini Funkos, so I‘d be surprised if there were a licensing issue. I‘m not getting the April box, but i look forward to seeing what you get! I‘ll be checking out the posts! (edited) 6y
LibrarianRyan @hermyknee yes I did. I think I have only skipped two because I already had galleys of the books. I didn‘t get Girls of paper and fire or Mirage. Next month is probably Wicked Saints. 6y
Avanders I‘ve been a mostly-on subscriber for ... idk about two and a half years now? I skipped 1 box — October 2017. And have deeply regretted it since for I want the Harry Potter mug in that box like 😱😱😱. @Endowarrior21 why do you ask? @bullbunny @That-Bookish-Hiker @LibrarianRyan @GripLitGrl @hermyknee @Chrissyreadit (edited) 6y
MrsGagnonreads2024 I was just curious to see who gets it 😁 6y
MrsGagnonreads2024 I had to skip April‘s box due to being a responsible adult comes first. 6y

Pickpick

Owlcrate has been doing overall much of the young-girl-caught-at-court-concept lately. There is always the promise of political conflict and war, but it always falls short, as if the writers are afraid to get their hands fictionally bloody.

But Lyra Selene isn‘t afraid to pay the price that revolution costs, and in this story hope and wonder and magic wars with darkness, despair and pain, almost on a psychological level.

Might be a favorite.

A couple of my favorite snippets of descriptive writing " I could see to the red river where it burned between the foothills. Bloated clouds rolled in overhead, snarling like shadow wolves. The wind whistled, tasting of moisture and foreign lands and the distant brush of midnight." "Liquid landscapes, rippling like pale honey below azure skies. Milk white plains beneath cobalt mountains. Thrones of amber, drenched in blood."

Just getting around to posting my December #OwlCrate box! I love that they did a planner again, like last December! The tote is fantastic too! Also includes a necklace, candle, and ornament. Looking forward to catching up on my OwlCrate books this year! #OwlCrateSociety

jpmcwisemorgan I ordered the planner because they still had some available. 6y

Got this in my Owlcrate box and I was sooo excited but...
It's like Lyra Selene was sitting with a thesaurus and a metaphor generator. Almost every sentence is overflowing with simile and/or metaphor. It's very hard to read.
Sylvia is obnoxious and entitled and bitter and constantly feels sorry for herself. She can't follow a single instruction from anybody, to the point that her ambition and defiance is no longer endearing.

#OwlCrate December 2018 theme: Power of Illusions. The Lunar Queen candle smells amazing, and I love the magnet with The Night Circus quote. The amber necklace was a cool pick too.

My final book of 2018 complete! I really enjoyed this - perhaps more than I expected. Dark world building that hinted at ancient French undertones, a strong but not always likable heroine, and a flawed prince 🤴. 😍 Def ready for part two...

#BookMail Pt10 The last of this weeks bibliomail is December‘s #OwlCrate Very happy with it, it has a gorgeous tote,a Russian style tree ornament inspired by The Crowns Game,an Ink&Wonder designed magnet with a Night Circus quote on it, a brilliant book journal/planner, the most scrumptious smelling candle inspired by the Lunar Chronicles(blackberry&vanilla), chapter sampler from the sequel to Ace Of Shadows, an “Amber” necklace & the tagged book.

Literary_Siren I loved this crate as well! But I super loved what LitJoy sent this month! 6y

Well I wasn‘t going to read any more for 2018 but then I thought how sad that would make me feel sooooo I decided to begin this one. Book number 74 of my year I will do my best to finish it this year lol

Caffeinated_Reader Oh my! I give this book an infinite amount of stars & thumbs up. I absolutely loved the main character. Mirage is so complicated and brave. All of the characters were so well developed and played their parts so epically. I can not wait for the next book. 6y
