Then We Came to the End
Then We Came to the End: A Novel | Joshua Ferris
No one knows us quite the same way as the men and women who sit beside us in department meetings and crowd the office refrigerator with their labeled yogurts. Every office is a family of sorts, and the ad agency Joshua Ferris brilliantly depicts in his debut novel is family at its strangest and best, coping with a business downturn in the time-honored way: through gossip, pranks, and increasingly frequent coffee breaks. With a demon's eye for the details that make life worth noticing, Joshua Ferris tells a true and funny story about survival in life's strangest environment--the one we pretend is normal five days a week.

I might be coming to the end of reading this book. I‘m about 75 pages in and I‘m getting really sick of reading the constant refrain of how unhappy they all were and their equal unwillingness to make any changes to improve their lives…

Has anyone read this one? Should I bail or does it get any better?

wanderinglynn I bailed on this one. In my review, I said “I found the writing atrocious with choppy sentences and lack of direction. And the first person plural failed to be cute or witty and was simply annoying.” 2y
sarahbellum @wanderinglynn Yes, totally agree with the lack of direction and how annoying the first person plural is! Thanks for sharing! 2y
Bookwormjillk I think this was very much a book of its time and probably didn‘t age well. 2y
sarahbellum @Bookwormjillk Probably doesn‘t help that work is super stressful right now, so the last thing I want to read about is soul sucking work 😖 2y

I have not read this one. It was on my radar but had mixed reviews. Then @wanderinglynn read it and hated so I took it off my list because I trust her opinion.

BarbaraBB I enjoyed it but then I worked at an advertising agency for a while and it was really recognizable! 3y
wanderinglynn 😆 I had to look up my review because I did not remember this book at all. 3y

This one has been on my TBR for the best part of 10 years, and I finally read it thanks to #BookSpin, as it was this month‘s #DoubleSpin selection. I find myself wondering if I would have enjoyed it more if I‘d read it 10 years ago. Some aspects of its look at office politics are keenly observed, but some seemed far too petty, and the book itself felt overly long. It was a decent read, but didn‘t set my world alight.

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks At least it's finally off the list!!! 3y

#Bizness #NoFemmeber Odd that this is the only book I can easily recall that is more than superficially about modern life at work--lots of potential for humor and poignancy, and this has both. I'll be on the lookout for other good ones today! Merrill Garbus' business is whipping up bold vocals and self-made samples into a frenzy, not to mention lyrics that rail against injustice. tUnE-yArDs is guaranteed to liven up your boring workday! @Cinfhen

I pulled the most random collection of books off the shelf yesterday when trying to determine what to start next on my #TBR 🤔 The tagged book fit my desire for something light and funny so it might be next..
Oh and of course all 5 #botm choices will be added to this December stack in a few days time 😊

mrozzz Would love to see what you think of 6y
emilyhaldi @mrozzz have you read it? And if so what are your thoughts? 6y
mrozzz Uhhhh I got through about 27 pages and decided I couldn't handle the focus required for it at the time. And then I got Solar Bones from the library and begrudgingly pushed though (they have similarly outrageous, hard to follow writing styles) so, unfortunately I don't think I'll get back to Bohemians any time soon 6y

Have any of my fellow Littens read this book? Would you recommend? Please let me know. ☺️

KCorter This has been sitting on my bookshelf for years. I tried reading it last year, but it felt like the right book at the wrong time. The premise looks cool though! I know it is one of those books I'll probably regret not reading sooner. 7y
Vansa I've read this , and really really liked it. Thought it was quite a good depiction of not just the ad industry but also regular corporate life in general. It's a quick read. 7y

I finished this yesterday and am still torn on how I feel. Maybe it was the format that threw me off, I'm not sure. However, it was an interesting story with intriguing characters. I'm still trying to figure out who's point of view it was told from.

'We were fractious and overpaid. Our mornings lacked promise. At least those of us who smoked had something to look forward to at ten-fifteen.'

I've been working in a design/communication agency for years an this novel about #work at an advertising agency is so damn funny and recognizable! And it reminds me of The Office, which I loved on tv!

Thanks for hosting #AugustGrrrl, @Cinfhen it has been so much fun! Now onto #SeptemBowie!

Billypar You beat me to the punch with this choice- loved this one and I had the same thought- it is The Office of books. 7y
LauraBeth @BarbaraBB not before I served a 20 year prison sentence - so I probably only have a fourth of my soul left 😀 7y
BarbaraBB @billypar Yay, it certainly is. I had to laugh out loud so many times! 7y
BarbaraBB @LauraBeth 20 years... you're doomed 😂! Glad you've made it! What made you cross that line?! 7y
LauraBeth @BarbaraBB I woke up one day and realized what a horrible work/life balance it was. I worked holidays away from my family - worked basically around the clock. I missed out on all of my daughter's elementary school years - I could never be home to make a recital, a play, a game. So I had to realize how out of whack my priorities were - I actually almost lost my family because of it (got divorced after 10 yrs but we reconciled and got re-married). 7y
BarbaraBB @laurabeth Sounds awfully familiar. I felt the same after six years. I hardly remember my youngest as a baby and a recital at elementary school which I missed again made me decide to quit. Fortunately I didn't lose my husband. How good to hear you two made up again! 😘 7y
LauraBeth @BarbaraBB you're much smarter than me to realize it sooner rather than later 😀 💕 7y

Joshua Ferris writes very unusual books and I must confess that I am a fan. This was the first book by him I read and, apart from the choice of narrator(s), I enjoyed learning about the lives of these coworkers who were losing their jobs.
