Can't Escape Love
Can't Escape Love: A Reluctant Royals Novella | Alyssa Cole
49 posts | 51 read | 20 to read
Alyssa Cole delivers another fun, sexy romance novella in the Reluctant Royals series! Regina Hobbs is nerdy by nature, businesswoman by nurture. She's finally taking her pop culture-centered media enterprise, Girls with Glasses, to the next level, but the stress is forcing her to face a familiar supervillain: insomnia. The only thing that helps her sleep when things get this bad is the deep, soothing voice of puzzle-obsessed live streamer Gustave Nguyen. The problem? His archive has been deleted. Gus has been tasked with creating an escape room themed around a romance animeexcept he knows nothing about romance or anime. Then mega-nerd and anime expert Reggie comes calling, and they make a trade: his voice for her knowledge. But when their online friendship has IRL chemistry, will they be able to escape love?

Love reggie and gus. They are funny and my kind of nerds. I also love all the nerd references sprinkled in.

I've always felt like I should love Alyssa Cole's books yet they never clicked for me. I decided to give it one more try with this novella and guess what? It's no longer a problem! I really enjoyed this novella which brings together two lovely nerds who each have their own challenges to face. It was sweet, it was hot, it felt real, and I loved that it took place in Queens.

Thanks @Enchanted_Bibliophile for the tag. I actually remembered to do it... I usually forget.

1. I told my husband I wanted The Mask Falling by Samantha Shannon so hopefully🤞🏻I have a book each to give my husband and son as well.

2. already finished the tagged book and loved it so much!🧍🏽‍♂️💗👩🏿‍🦼 I loved the short glimpses of Reggie in previous books & was so excited for her story. Might pick up another romance this month

Honestly - if Alyssa Cole is going to write something then I‘m going to read it! This is a novella and it was funny, sweet and so perfectly nerdy. Reggie is smart, sassy, a bit defensive and so excited about her favorite television show. Gus is blunt and focused, but puts himself out there and pays attention. These two just made me happy.

As with the other novella in this series, my main complaint is that it should be longer. I wanted more of these two falling for each other and then being together. Still, this is a sweet story with lovable protagonists whose chemistry is palpable and whose nerddom brings me great joy. I listened to the audiobook, and Karen Chilton continues to do a great job of narrating this series, although she is the slowest of speakers. 🦥

We def need more romances between two nerdy people. Cute & fun novella, I liked Reggie & Gus & liked them together. Altho excuse my ace whining but can we not have characters saying I love you after like a week? Has some weird pacing bc it also ends fairly abruptly & we don‘t get to see the Con they‘ve been talking about the whole time. But I thought the disability rep was handled respectfully & it was funny at times, too. Good breezy read. 3/5 ⭐️

The tagged novella is part of my favorite series - Cole's “Reluctant Royals“ - and gives us two great protagonists that aren't your typical romance MCs. Reggie is Black and uses a wheelchair; Gus is Vietnamese-American and neurodiverse. Reggie is also the twin sister of a heroine in one of the series' earlier novels, so it was a chance to see some of that book's plot from her POV.

Can't wait to see your recommendations!

WhatWouldJaneDo I've only read the first book in this series but I love that Cole focuses on such a variety of characters in the other books (the one about Likotsi sounds really good, I loved her character in the first book)! 4y

Such a fun read! If you are looking for a light read that‘s fun and sweet and offers an escape from the daily horrors and stresses, check this out. It‘s a short novella, but the characters are really fleshed out. You don‘t have to have read the other 3 previous books in the Reluctant Royals series, but I think it would definitely help if you‘ve read Duke by Default, which I also enjoyed.

And we are off to the races! For #24B4Monday
This was a delightful novella, I have read two Alyssa Cole stories this year and I love her writing style and beauty she brings to romance. She is such a detailed author and gives lots of character development to her characters, even in a short story like this one.

It's a beautiful story that challenges so much about what love looks like in the 21st century Highly recommend

Finally managed to get the last of the Reluctant Royals series read with the 30 day free trial Scribd is offering right now, and I wasn't disappointed. It's another sweet little side story filling in the love like of Portia's sister and Girls with Glasses founder, Reggie. I love that neither Reggie nor Gus are neurotypical and how genuine the connection they develop is. Another adorable romace from Alyssa Cole for sure!

I‘m right on the edge of a pain day, so I popped out to the library first thing in case I‘m unable to go later. Got Alyssa Cole‘s second Reluctant Royals novella, some new X-Men, a volume of poetry off the New Releases display, and a whole bunch of PRINCESS JELLYFISH so I can reread the series and finally see how it ends.

Gosh, I love this novella! Alyssa Cole does great contemporary disability rep. (She even got a straw ban dig in, which is 🔪👌 considering how many ableds don‘t know how ableist it is.) Highly recommend for so many reasons: disabled Black wheelchair user heroine! Autistic Asian hero! Snark! Escape rooms! Nerdery!

I am here for these beautiful nerds finding and falling for each other. Guys is just adorable and so sweet. He is hyper aware of himself and others but I love how he manages the world. Reggie has worked hard to build up her business and does not let anyone use her disability against her. To have Gus be so accepting of her and do the same for him was beautiful to watch. I want more of this in my romace! #romantsy

Fun, short, inclusive romance. Not the best story, but a nice 'meanwhile' to book 2 - A Duke by default. I don't know why it is classed as 3.5 - it should be 2.5 and 2.5 should be 1.5, but I don't make the rules.
I'm looking forward to the other inclusive novels this author might write - she's nicely set up for a gender-queer romance and I hope she explores other topics like illness or obesity too.

I mostly enjoyed it. I had some trouble connecting to the characters. Reggie was WAY prickly. Gus didn't seem to be connected to reasoning at all -- he just did things because it felt like the thing to do. Plus, a love interest named Gus was a little weird. Cute, but definitely not my favorite of this series.

The two novellas in Cole's Reluctant Royals series star Thabiso's assistant (Once Ghosted, Twice Shy) and Portia's sister (Can't Escape Love). I loved Reggie's story and was meh on Likotsi's. The timeline jumping in Once Ghosted felt jarring and I never felt like I got to know the characters. #romantsy
⬇️

silentrequiem Reggie and Gus were amazing and I love them. My love for their story may be largely because it was so overwhelmingly nerdy and geeky and the plot centers around them geeking over an anime to build an escape room. Also some great discussion on ableism!

These characters really deserved full-length novels. I think I would have liked Once Ghosted better if the story had been given more time to develop.

Short and sweet. This is a smart, fun, short yet emotional window into a side character, Regina aka Reggie, Portia's nerdy, smart, geeky, internet entrepreneure, twin.
Cole's in less then 200 pages makes the two characters solid, with multiples layers with a touch of anime fairy tale.

My 4th Alyssa Cole book and my favourite. I guess I really appreciate geeks in love?? I'm bummed this was only a novella because I wanted more about Reggie and Gus! I loved how unabashedly nerdy they were. She runs a website for nerds who are POC, women, disabled, or otherwise excluded from mainstream nerd culture. He has a puzzle livestream and designs escape rooms. Also thought the representation of disability (physical and mental) was great.

A very cute “meanwhile” romance for Reggie that takes place during the denouement of A Duke by Default. We get to see the story from Reggie‘s side, which is important given the history we‘ve had from Portia. Definitely an important romance story to tell, about a nerdy WOC who uses a wheelchair (which is depicted on the cover!) and a Vietnamese neurodiverse man; it‘s lovely and sweet but DAMN I wish it was a full-length novel instead of a novella.

balletbookworm The short length really causes Instalust here (along with a bit of overload on the nerd cred information). 6y
