The Nanny
The Nanny | Gilly Macmillan
A gripping psychological thriller for readers who loved THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR and THE CHILD. Why is she back? And what does she want? Jocelyn was seven years old when her beloved nanny disappeared overnight. Her parents never told her why. Devastated by the loss and the disruption of her safe family enclave, Jocelyn never quite got over it. Thirty years later, Jocelyn returns to her crumbling, shadowy family home. Widowed and vulnerable, she has a young daughter of her own. Then her long-gone nanny appears on the doorstep. And Jocelyn soon realises that she doesn't know who this woman really is - or, now that she's back, what she wants. Or what really happened on that fateful night all those years ago...

A decent rather than stellar pick. Enjoyable & easy read. The suspense grows nicely & while it never quite reaches fever pitch, it is engrossing enough to keep the pages turning quickly. I enjoyed the slow reveal, the mounting sense of menace, the dawning sense that nothing is as it seems. Couldn't decided if I liked the characters or hated them...but then decided I quite liked it like that! Deeply satisfying ending.

This is a tale of secrets, lies, and deception, such a clever novel. The Nanny is a slow burn, character based story, One of the best WTF books I read in a very long time.

This book felt like someone trying to keep a secret for too long. The author periodically switched viewpoints to leave out information and to keep the story fresh; that being said, when it became obvious that the author was going to hold on to a secret that half the characters obviously were aware of, it started to drag.

This Is a tale of secrets, lies and deceptions. In 1988 when Jocelyn Holt's Nanny, Hannah, left she was 7 years old and she was devastated. 30 years later she returns home with her daughter, Ruby, to confront her troubled relationship with her mother. When human remains are accidentally uncovered in a lake on the estate, Jo begins to question everything she thought she knew.

EadieB An unexpected visitor knocks on the door and Jo must uncover who her nanny really was, why she left, and if she can trust her own mother. This book had a slow start but the plot had twists which held my interest. The characters were unlikeable and hard to connect with. 3y
EadieB The ending was a bit rushed, so all in all, I would say it's an ok book but not one of Macmillan's best. I have read all of her books and have enjoyed them so I do look forward to her next book, The Long Weekend, March 2022. 3y

I was unimpressed by this one. I'm thinking I should avoid "popular" thrillers for a while since I haven't seemed to enjoy them as much as I once did.

The characters in this one felt superficial and I really didn't care what happened to them. ?

The good point was it was a fast read and I finished it in a day. ?

My June #bookspin #doublespin books are all titles I‘m planning to read for the summer edition of the Goodreads Seasonal Reading Challenge. I‘ve been participating since 2009 and it‘s my all-time favourite challenge. While it has rendered my TBR unmanageable 😬, over the years, the tasks have pushed me out of my reading comfort zones and introduced me to some wonderful authors and books. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Great list!!! 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser Artemis Fowl is on my TBR too! 😉 I have also just finished The Woman in the Window, it was awesone! A very easy read, and a little thrilling also. Best of luck! 4y

Meh...
A 7 year old girl‘s nanny disappears mysteriously in the middle of the night. Years later a body is found on a lake on the property.
I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters in this book. I thought the audiobook was well done-voices by 3 different narrators. However I found that I was avoiding listening to it. (Never a good sign.) If you need redeemable characters keep looking. Nothing to see here.

TerriGreen Hmm.. yep I do need likable characters. 🤔 4y

This was a decent book. It had a great plot with an amazing ending. The characters needed more work but I enjoyed listening to how the three different narrators read for each character. I gave it 3.5 ⭐

Hmm...
I guess my verdict is “missable.” There weren‘t any twists, per se, and the author didn‘t really nail the ending. I thought the writing was a bit clunky too. I actually have enjoyed other books by this author, so I‘m not sure why this one fell short for me. Maybe because I was experiencing it as a read aloud with @wanderer15 and therefore focusing more on each word? Either way, there are so many way better thrillers out there.

Hooked_on_books I‘ve read one of hers and wasn‘t impressed. Could be she‘s hit or miss. 4y

The characters were decent enough in this one. It kept my attention. There were character revelations along the way that were interesting. I‘d recommend this and I‘d read others by Gilly Macmillan, which is good considering I have bought a couple of her books and haven‘t read them. While nothing groundbreaking, this is an enjoyable read/listen. The narrators did a good job.

Since we‘ll be at home for the foreseeable future (as we have been most of this week), @wanderer15 and I decided it was time for a read aloud. We considered the books in this stack and ultimately chose the top one. So far it‘s just okay; I notice the quality of the writing in different ways when I‘m listening to a book versus reading it silently. So far the author does a lot of telling, not showing. But we‘re curious to see where it goes. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This was really slow for a thriller. And it was a little predictable. And I really hated everyone. It was hard to find any good qualities in anyone, except maybe Ruby. That made it kind of frustrating to read.

This book was a challenge for me. I was unable to connect with the characters and found the plot to be somewhat disjointed. There were moments where MacMillan really hit the mark for me, but overall, in my opinion, this story fell flat. Perhaps it was because there were multiple narrators and the time frame shifted quite frequently, but I never found the pace of the book. The basic premise of the story was interesting but not great execution.

Man it‘s hard to find a thrilling thriller. This one started off well enough, but the characters became more grating and unbelievable as the story moved along...and the resolution was ridiculous. Anybody read anything in this genre that actually lives up to its hype or premise?

TheDaysGoBy I enjoyed In a Dark, Dark Wood 4y
TheLudicReader I read that one a few years ago, @TheDaysGoBy and I had the same problem with it. Just got to the point where I was frustrated with characters and the denouement. Perhaps I am asking too much of my thrillers. 😏 4y
TheDaysGoBy @TheLudicReader I feel the same way. I‘d read The Woman in Cabin 10 first and that character was awful. So I think In a Dark Dark Wood was a bit better and more exciting to me 4y

What a wild ride! This story was delightful to read as a mystery. So many things to say that would be spoilers!! The audiobook was a full cast and very well done. I live a full cast audiobook.

Magnificent! Highly recommend! I liked this better then the Turn Of The Key, which also involved a nanny.

Does anyone buy their audiobooks from a different place then Audible? If so where? And how much is a credit? I am looking into Libro FM for 14 bucks a month
So I curious to know what other options exist. I currently use Scribd but that's more like renting them then buying them.

Please let me know in the comments below. Thanks! I

Soubhiville I just heard about chirpbooks.com. I hear it‘s similar to bookbub, but I haven‘t checked it out. It‘s free to join and I believe you get daily emails with offers, and the books start at $1.99. You own the books you buy. It‘s worth looking into. (I just use Libby through my library. Can‘t beat free!) 5y
rsteve388 For sure and I get free audiobooks through my library. But I am thinking of starting a library for my audiobooks. There are some.of them that I really enjoy 5y
