Abdulrahman and Kathy Zeitoun run a house-painting business in New Orleans. In August of 2005, as Hurricane Katrina approaches, Kathy evacuates with their four young children, leaving Zeitoun to watch over the business. In the days following the storm he travels the city by canoe, feeding abandoned animals and helping elderly neighbors. Then, on September 6th, police officers armed with M-16s arrest Zeitoun in his home. Told with eloquence and compassion, Zeitoun is a riveting account of one familys unthinkable struggle with forces beyond wind and water. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This was really intriguing. Having recently lived through my own Cat 5 Hurricane (Ian), I was really interested in this. The devastation in Nola, was on another level than what we experience in Fort Myers, but I can relate to the panic, PTSD, terror, etc. a very captivating story

A very nice non-fiction book based on the experiences of Abdulrahman Zeitoun during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The book starts very tranquil and even paints a beautiful otherworldly picture of flooded New Orleans. But the last three parts are very disturbing (the absence of civil and human rights during that time). I left me truly shocked, distressed and devastated.

MariaW Unfortunately, Zeitoun‘s own fate took a bad turn after the publication of the book. But this shall not be taken into account here. 3y
Readerann I liked this, too. I also liked A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Eggers. Sorry I don‘t know how to tag the book here. 🤔 3y

This is what a teacher‘s copy looks like. 🙈
While reading I already use a lot of different coloured postits and annotations to mark the things I want to discuss with my students. We did change the reading of the 12th grades from Half Broke Horses to Zwitoun due to my recommendation. I liked the reviews and now I even more convinced.

The book is disturbing and really shows the dark side of the Katrina aftermath. It‘s painful to read and causes one to doubt our ability to deal with adversity as a nation. Just a warning: when you read the book, don‘t google to find out how Zeitoun is today. You‘ll be really disappointed.

This book broke my heart & enraged me. Zeitoun, a Syrian immigrant & business owner, stayed behind in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina after his wife & children evacuated. He cared for neighbors & pets from his canoe while government agencies let the city fail. He was wrongfully arrested & imprisoned and held without bail or the ability to contact his wife. My only complaint is a little repetition, but overall Eggers tells his story well!

Megabooks Thank you so much @BarbaraBB for sending me this book!! 💜💜 3y

Cinfhen This was eye-opening! I had no idea what was going on 3y
Cinfhen I like Eggers NF writing so much!!! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen unfortunately, I wasn‘t surprised this happened, but I am a realist bordering on pessimist. And yes, Eggers nonfiction is 🔥🔥! I wasn‘t a fan of his fiction, but after this and Mokha, I‘ll read any nonfiction he writes. He‘s really shined a light on two very important stories with these books! 3y
Cinfhen So I read this book too and thought it was excellent 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen Sounds like a good one for #ReadingAfrica2022!! @barbarabb 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks @Cinfhen I already thought of that and will do! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB now I kind of wish I had waited until my AC was fixed to write this review because I‘m making connections like how the general lawlessness of Katrina probably allowed law enforcement to feel frightened and emboldened to treat citizens inhumanly. That part at the Amtrak station was just awful!! So much went wrong in NO during Katrina, which makes it all the more terrible that a good person like Zeitoun was so horribly mistreated!! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it‘s getting up around 32 degrees C (90 F) plus 80-90% humidity and my room was SO HOT! (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB That is so hot!! And without AC? Man! I can see the connection to Zeitoun at the Amtrak Station! 3y

Thank you @BarbaraBB for this lovely gift and card! I‘m so excited to read it, and it‘s a beautiful copy. You know how much I adore nonfiction! 💜😘

BarbaraBB It‘s a bit of a guess since you were no fan of Eggers but I do think his non fiction is not to compare with his fiction. I loved this one. It‘s a harsh story though. 4y
BittersweetBooks Really good book 👍🏻 4y

This book marked off several challenges for me. Zeitoun is a story of a man dealing with a tragic situation and trying to make the best of things. This book is full of hard to read true events that took place after Katrina that never should have occurred. It is also full of hope and community.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa OMG I just went onto Goodreads to add this one to read and saw a review of this from someone who knew them https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/871197486 (edited) 4y
Addison_Reads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm aware of the controversy surrounding Zeitoun and his arrests after the book. However, being from Louisiana and living close to New Orleans through Hurricane Katrina, my husband was actually working at Commander's Palace Restaurant in New Orleans at the time, there is still truth in the stories, although embellished some for the book. It's sad though because Eggers wrote a wonderful book. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Addison_Reads The second post I wrote, basically says the same, beautiful book, the NOLA parts post Katrina were spot on, and teaching the controversy can be good (it was from a teacher) 4y
Addison_Reads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was just reading that article. Thank you for sharing. 😀 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Addison_Reads You‘re welcome. Your review sounded great, the book‘s description on Litsy sounded right up my alley, and then I went to Goodreads to add it and that first review was blistering! 😬 so I did my own google search and then felt much better. Still sounds like a good read, after a bit more digging. (edited) 4y
Addison_Reads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I knew going in about the moral issues of the Zeitouns, but I was more interested in if Eggers would address the tougher issues in New Orleans after Katrina, and he did. It really is a well done book, especially if you go into it with you "eyes wide open" so to speak. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Addison_Reads Exactly! As long as I know what I‘m getting into. 4y

This was really good. There were a few parts – mostly Zietoun‘s background in Syria – that I kind of lost focus, but the rest of it was really good. I did see a sort-of “spoiler” when I was only part-way through that I wish I hadn‘t seen, though it wasn‘t specifically about the storyline.

Unfavorable revelations about the character of Mr. Zeitoun have surfaced since the publication of this book. Yet, this non-fiction account of Post Katrina NOLA is eye opening and devastating. Eggers wrote a compelling narrative as presented to him by the Zeitoun family. Perhaps Zeitoun's actions and motivations were white washed, but the horrendous conditions after the disaster are indisputable. #ReadWithMrBook #1WordTitle @MrBook

Mdargusch Now I‘m going to have to google him. I read this book years ago and I didn‘t realize there was more controversy. 5y
cherinium @Mdargusch Yeah, I went down the Google rabbit hole after reading someone's comments about the book on Goodreads. Turns out he is not necessarily the upstanding citizen portrayed in the book. Despite that, I still believe it's highly probable that he could have truly been profiled and falsely imprisoned as described. 5y

Hurricane Katrina was a huge cluster fuck. You think you know the extent of the shit our government tries to pull, and then you find out more and it fucks with a brain spoon feed that “we‘re the best” since birth. It‘s hard to square that away with “we our not our government” but we kinda are...

Remarkable & does not disappoint. The story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun & his family in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina, the storm itself & then its aftermath is inspiring, deeply human, frustrating, horrifying &, ultimately, infuriating. As you read this book it‘s almost impossible to believe such things could happen in the US & yet they did. This book puts a very human face on what happens when disaster strikes. A definite recommend.

Picked this one to read next because it‘s been hanging out in my TBR pile for a while. Of course the first blurb I see is by Timothy Egan, the author of The Worst Hard Time. The only other Eggers book I‘ve read is The Circle—I didn‘t love it but there were parts of it—and certainly the IDEA behind it—I enjoyed. I have higher hopes for this one.

Zeitoun is a book about the New Orleans hurricane, Katrina. Based on true experiences, A. Zeitoun, was introduced through his native, Syria. I learned a great deal about Syria and the Muslim religion. As Katrina approached, it was heartbreaking to learn the limited availability of assistance to the region. The narrator, Firdous Bamji, expertly portrayed the emotional ups and downs of the Zeitoun family.

#seasonsreadings2016 #titlesthatstartwithxyz I've yet to read my x & y selections...I'm saving them for my 2017 reading challenges but I did read Zeitoun & The Zookeepers Wife. If you need a "Z" title, I highly recommend Zeitoun?

AliBG I loved ZEITOUN when I read it, too...but the aftermath was so awful (divorce/stalking/soliciting murder charges and additional jail time) that eventually it left a bad taste in my mouth.
