Accidental Tourist | Anne Tyler

POIGNANT . . . FUNNY . . . "THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST" IS ONE OF HER BEST. . . . [TYLER] HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER. "The New York Times" Macon Leary is a travel writer who hates both travel and anything out of the ordinary. He is grounded by loneliness and an unwillingness to compromise his creature comforts when he meets Muriel, a deliciously peculiar dog-obedience trainer who up-ends Macon s insular world and thrusts him headlong into a remarkable engagement with life. BITTERSWEET . . . EVOCATIVE . . . It s easy to forget this is the warm lull of fiction; you half-expect to run into her characters at the dry cleaners . . . Tyler [is] a writer of great compassion. "The" "Boston Globe" Tyler has given us an endlessly diverting book whose strength gathers gradually to become a genuinely thrilling one. "Los Angeles Times" A DELIGHT . . . A GRACEFUL COMIC NOVEL ABOUT GETTING THROUGH LIFE. "The Wall Street Journal""

So today I worked at a Brotherhood of St Laurence for their store opening, face painting and making balloons for all the lovely customers.
Of course at the end of my 4 hour shift (after I hungrily eat a free sausage in bread from their BBQ stand) I shop in the book section and found these little beauties!
I am listening to Clock Dance by Anne Tyler atm & I've just recently read her Patchwork Planet so I'm on the hunt for more Tyler novels!!

ljuliel Thanks for reminding me of Anne Tyler. I read some of her earlier books , but haven‘t read any new ones for several years. Accidental Tourist was my favorite of the ones I‘ve read. 2w
Curiouser_and_curiouser @ljuliel oh lovely, glad to remind you 😊 She is a new author to me and I'm eating her books up at the moment. Can't wait to read The Accidental Tourist. Also Breathing Lessons and Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant which I've got copies of. What a terrific author she is! I'm on the hunt for more of her work now. 2w
ljuliel I hope you can find more ! She is a good writer. 2w

After rereading this engaging classic about the brazen dog trainer who rocked the lives of the overly rigid Leary family, I had to watch the movie again. Director Larry Kasdan loved the book so much, he met with author Anne Tyler who showed him all the places in Baltimore that she wrote about. And that‘s where many of the scenes were shot. The story reminds us that life isn‘t very much fun without change and a few surprises. 😊
#YearofAnneTyler

PurpleyPumpkin I saw this movie years ago! When I realized that it was based on a novel, I resolved to read it. But I never did!!! Thanks for this reminder. 😉👍🏽 7mo

I know I said I was not going to buy another book. I just could not resist. What's one more added to TBR pile?

Eggs Read this after I saw the film with Geena Davis; both were good 2y

Just another shout out in case you missed it. I‘m doing postcard swap #3 . Signups are now open. I‘ve also added a little more incentive. I purchased a copy of the book Had A Good Time, which is a really cool book by an author who collects old postcards then makes up stories from them. Mint condition hardback. I was so excited to find it. After the cards are all in, I‘ll draw a name out of the participants. One of you will win this book. 💖#pcs3

Aloisi_tribe That looks like a really cool book! 2y
Kaye Yes it is. I read it a l o n g time ago , and kept thinking it‘d be a great prize for these postcard swaps. I found it at Wooster bookstore today. Excellent condition , hardback, from 2004. @Aloisi_tribe (edited) 2y
Bookishthoughts Wow! That looks like a great book😊💜 2y

Postcard Swap : Newbies & Lurkers Edition. Everyone is welcome, but I had a request from some of the newer members to do this one more time. Above is the collection of postcards I‘ve gotten from Litsy swaps. I‘d also like to collect more postcards. If interested, you will need to purchase one postcard for each person who signs up , mail them to me , and I‘ll mail you back a complete package of new cards from all over the US. 💖. #pcs3 @Kaye

Kaye *Also for those that missed out last time ! Hoping for the biggest one yet. 2y
Aloisi_tribe I‘ll do it again! Easiest and cheapest swap so far! I‘m excited to get my cards from the last swap. 2y
Kaye Thanks @Aloisi_tribe ✅ It is probably the lowest cost exchange , plus you can use them as bookmarks if you choose. 😁 2y

wanderinglynn I‘m in! But question, do we send blank postcards or write something on them? 2y
Kaye Thanks @wanderinglynn 😊 I‘m thinking 🤔 on what to have folks write on these. No personal info will be asked. Just Litsy name and a random fact about books / your state. Once I get the list of interested folks, I‘ll send an email with more info. ✅ (edited) 2y
Kaye @LazyDays I wanted to notify you, as you were interested in another round ! 2y
Traci1 Oh this sounds like fun. I'd like to participate. 2y
UnidragonFrag This sounds really cool! And a swap I can participate in, finally, as postcards are super cheap 😄 2y

cleoh @Kaye Yes! I‘m just in Canada, so it would be too much I don‘t think! (edited) 2y
Kaye Sounds great @cleoh . I can‘t recall mailing anything there so wasn‘t sure on the costs. It‘ll be fun to have you 😊 2y
cleoh @Kaye thanks for opening the swap to other countries! 😊 2y
Kaye You are welcome. We had a member from Germany in the past one. Very interesting to see postcards from a place I‘ll probably never get to see in person. ❤️. @cleoh 2y

Kaye Thank you @ralexist 😊 I‘ve added you to the list. ✅ (edited) 2y
Kaye Thank you @Chellebearss 😊. ✅Yes, I have another person from Canada in this one. As I told her, I may ask for some help with postage if it‘s very expensive. I‘ve never mailed anything to Canada. I‘d love to include you. ❤️ (edited) 2y
Kaye Sounds great @jamie_in_the_library 😊✅ Added you to the list. 2y
Kaye @SaturnDoo 😊, it‘d be great to include you. Yep, I found it‘s much easier to collect them all in one spot then divide them and resend. It‘d be much harder to keep track of when and where all the postcards were if we mailed them separately, would love to include you. ✅ 2y
CaitZ I'd like to join in too. I missed the last one. 2y
Kaye Sounds great @CaitZ I was looking for the posts of people who wanted to join and missed out last time. I‘m glad you are able to sign up Will send out further details in a bit. Will leave the post up a bit longer. You‘re added to the list 😊✅ 2y

LibrarianRyan @Kaye luckily I work at the place that creates the wiki about all the Illinois authors so have a reference service. 2y
BookwormAHN I'd like to be added. It sounds like fun 😸 2y

Eh, it was ok, but in the book‘s defense I didn‘t really want to read it, so I knew I probably wouldn‘t be a huge fan, lol. I needed to read a book published in 1985 for Book Bingo and I‘ve never read anything by Anne Tyler, so I figured I would give it a shot. It wasn‘t terrible or anything, and it was well written, but wasn‘t really my thing, either. *shrug*

Looks like I'm not the only one who is likely to look at their kindle library and think, "I #dontrememberbuyingthis."
I may not be able to say exactly which library book sale or thrift shop every book on my physical shelves came from, but I'll have a general idea. Whereas the kindle sales slip things into my kindle library, only to be found later, and wondered at... ????‍♀️⁉️

RealLifeReading There's something about buying on the kindle that's got Littens asking this today! 3y
Soubhiville @RealLifeReading I can't help it- when something on my TBR is under $5, I grab it. Apparently then I forget. 😜 3y

I don't think it's fair that this book has to follow Station Eleven. I can't remember the last time I finished a book and wished it were longer. Station Eleven was beauuuutifully written and left me with so many feelings.

On to Anne Tyler! I've wanted to try something of hers for a while and The Accidental Tourist was a #dailykindledeal last month. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.

A heartfelt story about a man coping with the death of his young son & the struggles in coming to terms with it. Thanks to his & his family's eccentricities, you will chuckle as well as tear up. Tender, quirky, & a joy to read. Pair with: S. Pelligrino Sparkling Water, chilled, with lemon wedges.

KVanRead Also with popcorn made in your bedside popper 😊 3y
