Northanger Abbey
Northanger Abbey | Nancy Butler
4 posts | 7 read
Lovingly adapted from Jane Austen's most humorous work, Marvel Comics is proud to present literature lover Catherine Morland's quest to be the leading lady of her own great romance. Can real life prove the equal of the Gothic novels she finds so enchanting? Can Catherine find true love amid the fictions of others and her own wild imagination? And what dread secrets lie in wait in Northanger Abbey itself? Award-winning author Nancy Butler continues her quest to reinvent Jane Austen's Regency world in the Mighty Marvel Manner. With exquisite illustrations from Janet Lee, 19th-century England comes alive like never before. Discover - along with Catherine Moreland - that while truth may not be stranger than fiction, it can be no less surprising! Collecting NORTHANGER ABBEY #1-5.

This graphic adaptation is a delightful way to quickly revisit a favorite Austen. The writing was spot on in covering the main plot points.
While I was at first annoyed that the interior art style was NOT the same as this wonderfully moody cover, the more cartoony style inside did grow on me - especially as it could portray movement (the dancing!) and more animated character traits.
Obviously it cannot replace a read of the original, but fun!

It‘s been an Austen filled week! Again, I feel Nancy Butler does a good job of adapting the story, but I‘m just not a fan of the art in this Marvel adaptation either. The settings were good, but I did not like most of the character portrayals, except John Thorpe who seemed spot on.
