A Game for All the Family
A Game for All the Family | Sophie Hannah
'One of the great unmissables of this genre - intelligent, classy and with a wonderfully Gothic imagination' - The Times He's not your son. It's not up to you to save him. But you have to try. After escaping London and a career that nearly destroyed her, Justine plans to spend her days doing as little as possible in her beautiful home in Devon. But soon after the move, her daughter Ellen starts to withdraw when her new best friend, George, is unfairly expelled from school. Justine begs the head teacher to reconsider, only to be told that nobody's been expelled - there is, and was, no George. Then the anonymous calls start: a stranger, making threats that suggest she and Justine share a traumatic past and a guilty secret - yet Justine doesn't recognise her voice. When the caller starts to talk about three graves - two big and one small, to fit a child - Justine fears for her family's safety. If the police can't help, she'll have to eliminate the danger herself, but first she must work out who she's supposed to be...

Hmmm. This was my first book by Hannah. She‘s a capable writer, clearly, but I didn‘t love this story of a former tv exec who moves with her husband and daughter to Devon, and suddenly her life goes off the rails including threatening phone calls. There‘s a story within a story element here, and while I had no trouble turning the pages, I found the whole thing more unsatisfying than unsettling. #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I've tried a couple Sophie Hannah books and they just aren't for me. 4y
TheLudicReader Yeah, @TheAromaofBooks I am not sure I will read another, either. 4y

The lack of “typographic” flexibility in ebooks, including this one, is one of the reasons I don't consider them to be ebooks. The quoted passage is meant to be from a story handwritten by the central character‘s daughter. https://medium.com/p/9d3fac7aae42

artkavanagh Oops, I meant to say “consider ebooks to be ‘real‘ books”. I haven‘t edited the original post because I thought the edited version might appear in the timeline as a new post. 4y

Just bought this today. Never read Sophie Hannah‘s books before. Will update about this from time to time. #sophiehannah #agameforallthefamily

Ja_G For me, this book has a bit boring story line, at first. But, when I started read Chapter 9, bammm!! I was wrong. Quite interesting. Just finished Chapter 10 today and can‘t wait to continue to read the rest at home. 5y

This is in my read folder on my kindle and I can remember a vague outline of the story! Not really rated the last couple of Hannah I‘ve read after really liking for a long time.

You‘ve left the city for a fresh start on the coast. But trouble begins when your daughter withdraws, after her friend, George, is expelled from school.

You beg the principal to reconsider, only to be told that George hasn‘t been expelled. Because there is, and was, no George.

Who is lying? As you search for answers, the anonymous calls begin—a stranger, who insists that you share a traumatic past and a secret. Then she threatens your life.

I think I‘ve figured it all out, but I really hope I‘m wrong. I still have 250 pages to go and if I know the “twist” already, it‘s just going to drag on. Please please tell me there‘s something I missed here!

One of the mysteries in this book is whether or not George exists and if he does, why the school faculty is pretending he doesn‘t....but to me the greatest mystery is how these parents believe this insane story about a child being expelled over a coat.

If there‘s an aspect of your life that‘s making you unhappy and you can escape from it, why wait? Too many people stick around and try to improve things, which often means slogging your guts out to compensate for the deficiencies of others. Personally, I‘m a fan of the discard: leave it; move on. #preach 🙌🏻

A family moves from London to an older sprawling house in the country. With this new life comes odd characters and events. By the end of this #mystery, it's hard to tell what is truth and what is fiction. Intriguing and engaging, Hannah draws her characters (whether real or imaginary) with humor and detail. Think Liane Moriarty with a twist. Recommended.

LeahBergen Sounds good! 7y

Started this on #audio yesterday. Enjoying it so far. Pending creepiness + snark + mystery = intrigue.

This is my first Sophie Hannah. Any recommendations for others?

That was not an easy read for me . It's the third book I've tried by this author. The only one I've finished. In the end I had to keep reading to see where it was going and how it would end.

I'm taking the time this very hot Perth afternoon to get this book finished. . I'm almost there. It's been a bit of a slog. Just found this quote about weirdness which appealed to me. 😍 @MrsMalaprop

Sue I'm so over summer! The humidity in Brissy today is driving me to distraction as well. What a great quote!!! 7y

This stand-alone Hannah novel was a four star read. It wasn't her best and required some suspension of disbelief to buy the motivation of the "bad guy" but it made me chuckle more than once and that goes a long way!

The chapters alternate between present day and a murder mystery written by the protagonist's daughter, who is beginning to think the story, which depicts a murder in their new home, might be true. #Recommendsday

Sophie Hannah strikes again. This is a really fun mystery read. Lots of suspense and it has a great story-within-a-story aspect that I loved

I'm officially a Sophie Hannah fan! This book was a great psychological thriller, lots of WTF moments, good, insightful writing with great pacing and enough clever moments that it never got too bleak. So happy I chose this for my first #24in48 #readathon 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

WTH! That's what I kept thinking while reading this! The plot leads you one way and keeps you going until the very end. Totally was not expecting it and also not the average ending for a thriller. Definitely a must read for anyone looking for a psychological thriller.
