I lowered my goal from previous years as I knew I was going to be very busy. Lots of rereads but an overall very enjoyable reading year.

This is the final paragraph of Dirda‘s year of columns on books. What a wonderful sentiment to end on!

Browsings collects the columns published over a year in an online magazine by Dirda, focusing on books and other bookish topics. There are a few pieces that aren‘t book related, but the voice and through line feel the same, so that worked for me. I found a lot to relate to in this book, with some snorting laughter and rueful smiles on my part.

I think many of us can relate to Michael. And poor him, what an unreasonable wife! 😂

I‘m enjoying this collection of columns about bookish things, but this one is making me nostalgic. I miss book sales! 📚📚📚

Because I go back and forth between a meh and a pick, I‘ve decided to come down on the pick side because I liked it enough to finish it. For a book that‘s supposed to be about books, there were several essays that weren‘t about books or reading. Dirda‘s reading taste is eclectic but it‘s also obscure; I had never heard of many of the writers he discusses. I discovered today that my backyard is a jungle; I had no idea we had bamboo. #audiowalk

More of this today while walking. Today‘s annoyance was a couple of essays, in a book about books and reading, that were not about books or reading. We‘ve had our Christmas tree for more than a week; we finally decorated it today. 😄. #audiowalk

I was enjoying these essays until I listened to Dirda discuss the NYPL renovations that allowed them to add more computers. The essay reeked of privilege. He is not in favor of it; only the poorest of the poor don‘t own laptops. He feels that libraries should be providing only rare items or things that are too expensive for people to afford. I guess we should throw out those popular novels and not worry about internet access for everyone. 😡

I don‘t think there‘s many clues to my personality in these 45 books, they‘re much too varied for that. The snowstorm is starting. Can't wait to curl up in bed now that I'm home from work. I'm hoping to finish the last couple of essays in the tagged book and pretend like the weather isn't going to be a complete disaster when I have to go back to work tomorrow lol.

I had meant to post this this morning but got distracted reading. All this snow fell in a short period this morning and walking home from taking my daughter to school just made me want to curl up with a book and a tea. I say all this snow like there was a lot that fell but yesterday was a nice fall weather type day and the snowfall was unexpected.

Loving this book by Michael Dirda, full of essays about bookish things.

Early reading matters. At any age, but especially in childhood, books can transform lives...what children behold, they become.

Finally finished this collection of columns by Michael Dirda. There is no question that he is intelligent, passionate about books, nerdy, and excited to talk about reading. However, this collection was so lukewarm to me. He has a very specific niche he reads, which incidentally doesn‘t overlap with mine; as a result, I couldn‘t relate or find much interest in most of his recommendations. Some columns were great but I was kind of bored overall.

I think Mr. Dirda would approve of the #bookmark. So far this is a fun book to read slowly. One little essay a day.

I agree with Dirda nothing beats a physical book!

I can guarantee you that I did not go to the “Dollar Tree” today to buy books for myself. But, “lo and behold”, look what happened...sigh...

I keep very few books after reading and yes, they do reflect part of my identity. Those resonant and if we ever finally get room back again for shelves = 🤗. I don‘t use the library for TBR bc right now it‘s a crazy busy life. Thoughts?

I have been missing you. I have been on book buying sprees and to the library as usual during my free time. Thanks for turning me on to thrift stores. This was my last small but sweet haul.

The world is full of wonderful stories, heartbreakingly beautiful and witty poems, thrilling works of history, biography, and philosophy. They will make you laugh, or hug yourself with pleasure, or deepen your thinking, or move you as profoundly as any experience this side of a serious love affair.

We don't read for high-minded reasons. We read for aesthetic, emotional, and intellectual excitement.
