At Home in Mitford
At Home in Mitford: A Novel | Jan Karon
It's easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable. Yet, Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won't go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's sixty years old. Suddenly, Father Tim gets more than he bargained for. And readers get a rich comedy about ordinary people and their ordinary lives.

An older gentleman saw me coming back from our neighborhood Little Free Library, and, in fellow bookworm conversation, he recommended this book to me. Has anyone read it and the subsequent series that follows? It seems like a quaint little read so far.

AmyG I hve been meaning to read these for a few years. I know many who love this series. 2y

Such a gentle book. It reminded me of the James Herriot series, but Father Tim is a preacher instead of a vet. I enjoyed it but it was slow going. I‘m not planning to read the next one.

“Sorrow and joy, he thought, so inextricably entwined that he could scarcely tell where one left off and the other began.”

“If you keep your eyes on Christians, you will be disappointed every day of your life. Your hope is to keep your eyes on Christ.”

webhau1 Keep going they keep getting better. The audios are really good also. 3y

#Top20Series #20Series20Days #Day10

I can‘t do this challenge and not include this wonderful series. It‘s another that hubby and I both love. The first word that always comes to mind when I think of these stories is “gentle.” Although the newer books in the series are on our shelf, these now reside with @AmyG 😄 They are books to be shared, and I‘m glad I was able to pass them along to another Litten.

Andrew65 Stacked! 4y
Sparklemn I love this series, too. 4y
AmyG I have them all lined upon my shelf. Funny, I thought the other day that next year I am doing NO challenges....so I can read what I have. Thank you again for these. 4y

#20series20days Day 11
Father Tim books
The Mitford series are some of the most feel good books I've ever read. They put me in mind of the James Harriot novels. They share the same wholesome humor, quirky characters, small town charm, and sweet love story. They are excellent escapism when the world is in turmoil.
@Andrew65

I bought this book because I liked the endpapers. I don‘t usually read Christian fiction but have decided to keep reading since it is always good to read something outside my usual range.

mjdowens I was actually really surprised at how much I enjoyed these. I read about 5-6 of the series and they truly are nice stories. Good humor in them also 5y

This was a reread for me. I was hoping to finish it last year, but things were so hectic and it took much longer than I expected, so it'll go towards this year's stats. I didn't enjoy it as much as I remember. And it was much "preachier" than I remembered. I still enjoyed the coziness of it, and it's very well written. I'd planned to reread the series to get caught up to where I left off. Not sure if I still want to do that though.

bookandbedandtea I love the coziness, the quirkiness, and the gentle humor of this series but it does get preachy. 6y
Mdargusch Interesting because I read these books years ago and loved them. I wonder if I‘d find them preachy now too. 6y
Crazeedi You know I've never read Karon, I've always heard these were good books, I may have to investigate ! 6y
Traci1 @Mdargusch I love the series. But it had been probably 4 or 5 years since I'd read any of them. For whatever reason it just struck me more this time that it was lots of bible verses and stuff. It surprised me that I didn't notice it as much before. Or at least didn't remember it. I still enjoyed it a lot. It's really sweet. 6y
Traci1 @Crazeedi they are really sweet books. 6y

Who likes Jan Karon's books? I asked because I tried hers once and while it was ok, it didn't grip me like I wanted. However, sometimes that's because I've just read a really great book that left me with hangover. So, should I try one more time or no???

Is this a thing people do? I have never heard of anyone doing this... Maybe it's specific to a certain area?

britt_brooke I'm from the south, but have never heard of anyone doing this. Maybe a certain southern region? 8y
Cinfhen I read this in another book too, set in the South. I'll probably never remember which one 🙄 8y
Sace My mother used to put peanuts in her coke. She was born and raised in Mississippi. I also seem to recall that this was referenced in a Barbara Mandell song "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool". 8y
Kpiper Yesssss! So much yes to peanuts in your Coke! It's a southern thing...at least in Texas and Georgia. Do not try it with a nasty ol' Pepsi (or any other Coke wannabe). It must be Coke to get the full goodness. Enjoy y'all! 8y
mom2bugnbee This is absolutely a southern thing. My father-in-law was from East TN & he did this all the time when he was alive. 8y
mom2bugnbee And it must be Coke, as @Kpiper said, because Coca Cola HQ is in Atlanta. 8y
AlaMich Interesting custom. Do you then eat the soggy peanuts or are they just for flavor? (I realize this sounds sarcastic but it's a genuine question 😉) 8y
underthebelljar @APLitlife @britt_brooke @Cinfhen @Sace @Kpiper @mom2bugnbee Interesting! It does make sense that is a Southern US thing - the book is set in North Carolina. Maybe it's only certain areas of the south? Now the most important question - how does it taste? 😆 8y
underthebelljar @Riveted_Reader_Melissa When I read that I stopped and had to reread the line. I thought it was a typo 😂 8y
underthebelljar @emilyhaldi Now I'm really curious about what it might taste like... 8y
underthebelljar @AlaMich I was wondering about that too! Or do the peanuts dissolve? 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well, I wouldn't think they'd dissolve, but they would make you coke salty I'd think.... maybe... 8y
APLitlife Peanuts do not dissolve, it is the salty taste it adds. I personally do not do it, I am from Montana, but I live in Texas and my husband and many around me do it. 8y
underthebelljar @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @APLitlife Ah I see. Sweet and salty together - I can see why that would be popular. 8y
