I have read a couple of books this year that mention - or in the case of Tom Lake revolve around - Our Town. I have somehow gotten through this life without seeing or reading the play and thought I should correct that. It isn't a play that is performed around my area so reading it was the way.i think I would have more affinity for it if I had learned it in highschool. It is a sad story and 👇.

ChaoticMissAdventures I understand why Patchette had her MC holding on tight to the memory of playing Emily. Overall though I found it all to be a bit boring, I had to take long breaks between acts. But I do understand the themes of life passing you by and the ebb and flow of generations. And Poor Emily. Maybe we should bring the play back to a wider audience to talk about maternal mortality now seems like a good time. 1w
rubyslippersreads I had to read it in high school and found it depressing. There‘s an old movie version, starring William Holden and some of the original Broadway cast, that makes me think Hollywood had the same concerns. (edited) 1w
Susanita Yesterday I learned that Aaron Copland did the music score for the movie. 1w
See All 7 Comments
TheLudicReader It‘s definitely worth watching. There‘s a version with Paul Newman as the stage manager that‘s really good. I first discovered it in the 1970s with a production starring Robby Benson (❤️) and thus began my love affair. I wrote my honours thesis on it, and so while I understand it seems dated, the themes are universal and the scene where Emily returns to her 12th birthday guts me every time. 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures @TheLudicReader I always feel I get so much more out of a story when I am doing bookclub, or a school project on it. Reading it in an afternoon on my couch with only Ann Patchett for context probably did it a disservice. @rubyslippersreads @Susanita looks like I will need to find the movie somewhere! It all feels very Americana- Rockwellian which I can appreciate for what that is.
1w
rubyslippersreads @ChaoticMissAdventures I think the Paul Newman version that @TheLudicReader recommended may be available on YouTube. I haven‘t seen it yet, but I‘m sure it‘s much more faithful to the original play than the old movie (available on Prime Video). 1w
TheLudicReader Yeah, the movie is not worth watching, @rubyslippersreads @ChaoticMissAdventures 7d

It had been years since I last read or watched this play, and I wanted to revisit it after reading Tom Lake. I‘m glad I did! There‘s a lot to make you think no matter what age you go back to it. 💗 Personally I was happy to have read Tom Lake first but I think if you‘re not at all familiar with Our Town you‘ll want to read the play first.

ChaoticMissAdventures I have been meaning to read this after Tom Lake! Thanks for the reminder 8mo

Read along with the 2003 production with Paul Neuman (because I loved him and he and Joanne Woodward used to stay at Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires when my brother was a manager there) as the Stage Manager. The intro to this edition listed the other popular Broadway shows running at the same time - none endured as this one has.
I‘d never seen it, but wanted to before I dove in to Tom Lake. Lotta deep thoughts now.

Tom Lake is on my tbr. I understand it refers to Our Town a few times. This was a quick read. Good to be knowledgeable of this classic I‘m sure.

vivastory I just checked out Tom Lake from the library. Really looking forward to it 8mo
CogsOfEncouragement @dabbe parts of Our Town seemed a little familiar to me, mostly the stage manager. I‘m not sure if I saw the play eons ago or if there is just a similar narrator in something else I saw. Definitely glad I read it though. 8mo

The last time I read this was in AP English back in 1983. 😳 After reading TOM LAKE, I had to revisit it, and I'm so glad I did. I remember finding it pointless at the tender and stupid age of 17. What the hell was wrong with me? Such a poignant reminder to carpe diem--especially the most mundane moments of our lives because going about our daily business is the life of living and we must cherish every single second. Thanks, TW, for the reminder.

TheBookHippie SAME GIRL SAME and then I saw the play too -the next year in 1984 🙃 guess I should reread it and the book you mentioned I‘ve been avoiding it . 🤣🤣🤣🤣 (edited) 9mo
sarahbarnes This is such a good reminder that I should read this again, too. So many books I didn‘t appreciate in my youth. 9mo

dabbe @TheBookHippie Our high school performed it, too! Okay, we need to meet somewhere in the middle of our country (wouldn't THAT be interesting?) and see the play by a small, hometown school. 🤩 9mo
dabbe @sarahbarnes I'm feeling that more and more. Books I hated in high school (I'm talking to you, MADAME BOVARY), I just loved reading as an adult. Did I actually acquire a little wisdom along the way? 🤔 Nah, probably not. I was a naive and obnoxious high school student. 😂 9mo
dabbe @TheLudicReader I hoped you would write (I'm working on your next letter, btw). It's because of you I got off my ass to read TOM LAKE. You inspire me, m'dear. 💚💙💚 9mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I haven't read or seen it, I feel like I need to after Tom Lake! Good to know others feel the same 9mo
TheBookHippie @dabbe yes. Because you‘d be a better date than the one I had. Rest his soul. 🤣🤣🤣🤣😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ 9mo
KAO I liked parts of this when I read it for first the first time when I was in high school, but time and experience happened—and by now I have read it a handful of times and love even the minutiae of this play. I think of it often in moments of deep appreciation of “small things.” 9mo
dabbe @TheBookHippie Should I cry or laugh? How about both? 😂😢🤩 9mo
dabbe @ChaoticMissAdventures It's a fairly quick read, too! 🤩 9mo
dabbe @KAO I will, too. How I missed that in high school, I have no idea why. Sometimes great literature is wasted on the young. 🤩😍😃 9mo
TheBookHippie @dabbe I laugh. But I am not really that nice about boys who thought they could get in my pants..........LMAOROF. 9mo

Amiable Since I just picked up “Tom Lake” at the library, I took your advice and read “Our Town” as a refresher. (It‘s been so long, I don‘t think I could have intelligently discussed the plot.) It left me in tears. Holy cow, that hits differently in your 50s 😳 Thanks for the push to experience all the feels. 9mo
dabbe @Amiable I cried, too! Act 3 just about did me in. I can't wait to read what you think of TOM LAKE. 💚💙💚 9mo

I absolutely love this play, but seeing it performed again this summer was an emotional experience. It was the 25th anniversary of my Mom's death and she performed as the lead in high school. The play is a celebration of life, both its simple routines and its big moments. Seeing it and rereading it was incredibly moving. I can't imagine experiencing this play and not appreciating the beauty of life a bit more when you are done.

#OnThisDay in 1938, Our Town debuted on Broadway. It would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award later that year. This was the second of Thornton Wilder's three Pulitzers (two for drama, one for literature. Can you name them?), and remains his most popular work. Especially with high school theatre departments and community theatres (three cheers for cheap staging!) #HistoryGetsLIT

This play is told in three acts appropriately titled ‘daily life‘, ‘love and marriage‘, and ‘death and eternity‘. It depicts a small town on the border of Massachusetts between 1903-1913 and what living there is like for its citizens. Though many actions are dated, the themes are immortal. This play shows the importance of appreciating the small things, companionship, and not taking life for granted. A wonderful light read, rich with human nature

I spent this afternoon doing my weekly food prep and listening to the classic play, Our Town. I enjoyed reading it as a kid, but as an adult, it felt like a nostalgic remembrance of a time that never really was. Set in the Jim Crow era and pre-19th Amendment, I have a hard time believing things were that good. Still, if you ignore everything else, it‘s a sweet love story.
