The Collected Poems of William Wordsworth
The Collected Poems of William Wordsworth | William Wordsworth
34 posts | 10 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
With an Introduction by Antonia Till. William Wordsworth (1771-1850) is the foremost of the English Romantic poets. He was much influenced by the events of the French Revolution in his youth, and he deliberately broke away from the artificial diction of the Augustan and neo-classical tradition of the eighteenth century. He sought to write in the language of ordinary men and women, of ordinary thoughts, sights and sounds, and his early poetry represents this fresh approach to his art. Wordsworth spent most of his adult life in the Lake District with his sister Dorothy and his wife Mary, by whom he had four children. His remarkable autobiographical poem 'The Prelude' was completed in 1805, but was not published until after his death, and it is included in this full edition of Wordsworth's poetry.

Watched a really great documentary this evening called The Booksellers, which is about the rare books industry. It got me thinking of some of my most precious books and wanting to figure out the oldest book I own - it looks like it's this copy of Wordsworth poems. There's an inscription date of 1872 from when it was gifted to a school, but it's possibly even a few years older than that! Rumpel didn't seem too impressed! 😸 #catsoflitsy #rumpel

Nutmegnc 😱that‘s amazing!! And in great shape!! (edited) 2y
GingerAntics Rumple does look like she‘s rather you be reading to her than taking her picture. For being such an old book, it does look in mint condition. I can‘t believe that was in a school library for a while. Maybe Rumple is just afraid to accidentally hurt the nice old book. 2y
Branwen @Nutmegnc I love it so much! I try not to handle it too much, but it's really hard because it's so lovely to touch! 😍 2y

Branwen @GingerAntics So, looking more closely at my post I realize that I got it backwards! 😫 It was gifted to someone FROM a school, not vice versa! 🙈 It was a prize for some kind of contest. It is in remarkable condition though, right?! It's gorgeous and had that perfect old book smell! 📖 2y
GingerAntics @Branwen oh I do love the smell of truly old books. 💙💙💙 I‘m guessing whoever it was gifted to clearly took good care of it. The fact this was ever in a school library really boggles the mind with its beautiful condition. Kids do not care for books anymore like this obviously was. (edited) 2y

A poem that represents a beautiful relationship between a love for the natural world and for the individual.

Mehso-so

3 ⭐ as it is a huge book & only read the poems beginning with 'C' for #litsyclassics. I would hope that this would have increased if I had read more of the poems.

9 hours & 17 minutes read for @Samplergal 's #12intwo readathon

@ErinSueG @WhiskeyMistress I haven't read many #localauthors so I've gone for the most famous one. It's unlikely I'm going to find an article stating Thomas Hardy's favourite book, but my favourite of his is Far From the Madding Crowd.

However his Wikipedia page says that he was influenced by William Wordsworth, so he must be one of his favourite poets.

Throwback Tuesday: That time when we visited Wordsworth‘s cottage in Grasmere during our honeymoon in 2012. It‘s the smaller house directly behind me, not the big one. ;) It was pouring that day and we took advantage of the only five rainless minutes to take pictures in the garden. I still keep telling my students how I secretly touched the famous couch from the ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud‘ poem, even though you weren‘t supposed to.🤣 #nerdalert

@Sarah83 these are all the poems beginning with 'C' in the book, not including ones entitled 'Composed...' or individual stanzas in his longer poems!

Sarah83 Looks better than the whole book. 🤗 6y
Suelizbeth Wordsworth was my dad's favorite poet and his favorite poem starts with "I wandered lonely as a cloud" and ends with "And dances with the daffodils." Whenever I‘m feeling low, I read that poem and I feel better. 6y
jenniferw88 @Suelizbeth it's my gran's favourite poem too! 6y

So I ordered this for #ukroadtrip and #litsyclassics not realising how large it is! @Sarah83 if I start it now do you think I'll have it finished by next year?! 😲🤣🤣🤣

Sarah83 😉🤗 how many pages? 6y
jenniferw88 @Sarah83 1060 pages not including the indexes! I might just try to find 10-20 poems beginning with 'C'! 6y
Sarah83 This book will take some time I guess. 🤔 6y

So I don't have a book nook myself. However I have always wanted a window seat to read in, with a gorgeous view.

When I was in primary school, we visited William Wordsworth's cottage on a school trip. (First 3 pictures are of Dove cottage from trip advisor). This is the first time I had come across a window seat, and it had a lovely view of the gardens.

The bottom two pictures are of window seats I covet 😍🤤

I went to the Wordsworth Trust in the Lake District today and we saw honest-to-goodness ORIGINAL Wordsworth manuscripts. This is the first draft of Lyrical Ballads, scribbled down in a travel notebook. It was amazing! #travel #wordsworth #poetry

My favorite color when I was a child was yellow. I loved reading this poem, because I could see fields and fields of yellow washing over hillsides and feel warm sunshine soaking into my skin.

One of my grandfather's favourite poems was Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" (aka "Daffodils"). He could recite it at the drop of a hat. ☺️

Lindy What a beautiful way to remember him. 7y
MrBook Nice! Too bad most folks don't wear hats anymore *sighs*. 7y
rabbitprincess @Lindy I read it at his funeral service and practised so much I can recite it myself. @MrBook Haha! And that is very much like something he'd say. ☺ 7y

At Tintern Abbey today
"- that serene and blessed mood,
In which the affections gently lead us on,
Until, the breath of this corporeal frame,
And even the motion of our human blood
Almost suspended, we are laid asleep
In body, and become a living soul:
While with an eye made quiet by the power
Of harmony, and the deep power of joy,
We see into the life of things."

I am in a bit of a tangle. I am trying to find a good edition of Wordsworth's poetry that has all of the poem "Prelude". Not just sections of it. Any suggestions? And when I do find it I will have my pencil ready to annotate the crap out of it. Annotating poetry is like keeping a journal of your feelings from that moment in time.

scripturient There is an affordable Penguin Classics edition which has all four versions including the first draft (ISBN 978-0140433692). 😊 8y

At the moment, I'm not at home with my books. I'm at the library, studying for my British Romantic Poetry test this morning. Scary stuff by William Wordsworth. 😂📚🤓👻(It's only scary because The Prelude is extremely long and dense....)#septphotochallenge #scarybooks

"There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,
The earth, and every common sight,
To me did seem
Apparelled in celestial light,
The glory and the freshness of a dream."

Came across this gem while watching the very last episode of "Penny Dreadful", will surely be missed!
Beautiful poem though❤️
