Delancey
Delancey: A Man, a Woman, a Restaurant, a Marriage | Molly Wizenberg
20 posts | 19 read | 21 to read
The New York Times bestseller from the author of A Homemade Life and the blog Orangette about opening a restaurant with her new husband: Youll feel the warmth from this pizza oven...cheerfully honest...warm and inclusive, just like her cooking (USA TODAY). When Molly Wizenberg married Brandon Pettit, he was a trained composer with a handful of offbeat interests: espresso machines, wooden boats, violin-building, and ice creammaking. So when Brandon decided to open a pizza restaurant, Molly was supportivenot because she wanted him to do it, but because the idea was so far-fetched that she didnt think he would. Before she knew it, hed signed a lease on a space. The restaurant, Delancey, was going to be a reality, and all of Mollys assumptions about her marriage were about to change. Together they built Delancey: gutting and renovating the space on a cobbled-together budget, developing a menu, hiring staff, and passing inspections. Delancey became a success, and Molly tried to convince herself that she was happy in their new life untilin the heat and pressure of the restaurant kitchenshe realized that she hadnt been honest with herself or Brandon. With evocative photos by Molly and twenty new recipes for the kind of simple, delicious food that chefs eat at home, Delancey explores that intimate territory where food and life meet. This moving and honest account of two people learning to give in and let go in order to grow together is a crave-worthy memoir that is part love story, part restaurant industry tale. Scrumptious (People).

This is a nonfiction account of a married couple that opened a pizza place together in Seattle. The book is an exhausting, but realistic depiction of the challenges they faced. I understand the frustrations that come out of such an endeavor, but it was like reading Debbie Downer's account of being married to a chef. It wasn't one that was enjoyable or even made me want to try the food. A few random recipes are included as well.

Bklover Sounds depressing! 1y

MicheleinPhilly I remember reading this years ago and being hugely bored by it. 1y

Librariana I think I felt like the 2017 version of @MicheleinPhilly - just kinda "meh" about it. But! It did make me crave pizza and I think you should treat yourself to some of that! 4y

TheShaggyShepherd I haven‘t read any foodie memoirs yet but I absolutely love the idea of them. Memoirs is one of my favorite genres, so combining it with food sounds about perfect. 5y

Reading the very charming Delancey by Molly Wizenberg (I loved her blog!) and snacking on some mid-morning munchies and a Nespresso on a grey and surprisingly chilly Bay Area morning.

I didn‘t expect to like this book. As a listener to the Spilled Milk podcast I am often annoyed that, although the subject matter can be fascinating, the numerous “likes” and goofy laughter at nothing (or maybe a sophomoric reference to body parts) take away from Molly‘s and her co-hosts knowledge and research.
The author comes off as a bit self centered and spoiled but I wonder if it‘s just because I myself am too harshly judging her. 🤷🏼‍♀️

LauraBeth I‘ve been wanting to read Delancey but it‘s still sitting on my tbr 6y
MicheleinPhilly I have. It was good, not great. According to GR, I gave it 3 stars which is usually my “Meh” rating. Apparently I give ratings like I give tips - entirely too much. 6y

I'm entirely unfamiliar with Wizenberg, but I thought this book with its details of opening a restaurant was pretty interesting. Her voice is clear and it has good drive, although I got bored for a bit in the middle. Too much restaurant, not enough marriage. 🌟🌟🌟 #audiobooks

BookNAround I love her on the Spilled Milk podcast. I really should read one of her books sometime. 😂 7y
kiminreverse @BookNAround I haven't heard her podcast, but I'd definitely read another book by her. 7y

I liked her previous book, A Homemade Life, much more. I guess I wasn't that interested in the struggles of opening a restaurant, but I did like hearing about how it impacted her life and her marriage. Also, the narrator's voice was all wrong. The voice was pleasant to listen to, but didn't match what I perceive to be the author's personality; it was too gentle and not spunky enough.

An inside look into what it's like to follow a passion and open a restaurant. While I do think she glossed over some things that lead to the restaurant's success (she had a widely-read food blog, a monthly column in Bon Appetit, many connections in food media), she does accurately capture the physical work, stress, and mental challenges accompanied with getting a restaurant off the ground.

This is a great read and gives very good insight into what it's like to start a restaurant (which we can relate to, all too well!). Highly recommend this for anyone who wants to learn what it's like to start your own restaurant. Or startups and entrepreneurship in general. Although, we can't recommend this soup recipe, but we endorse the effort! #restaurant #startup #cooking #entrepreneurship

I really enjoyed this book. Felt different from A Homemade Life (less nostalgic) but I loved reading everything related to opening the restaurant from an honest and relatable narrator. Plus, recipes!

I loved Delancey even more than A Homemade Life. Wizenberg is one of my favorite food bloggers, so relatable and charming. I laughed and felt for this couple and their restaurant. Inspiring recipes and foodie talk also makes me want to cook more, and more importantly eat more!
