I completed my Goodreads challenge last night by finishing this final book of the Magicians trilogy. This was also my January #DoubleSpin, so finishing it checked several boxes! I really enjoyed this one and think it was the best of the trilogy. I have my issues with Grossman‘s writing—a major one being his treatment of female characters, which was not rectified here—but other than that, I really liked how the series wrapped up.

Omg. I am shook. This series was so absolutely incredible. The first book was good, but the second and third books blow it completely out of the water. Is Quentin a miserable whiny turd in the first book? Yes. Does he (and all the rest of the characters) grow exponentially as a person throughout the rest of the series? HELL YES! Seriously guys, everyone needs to read this series. It starts out good but ends up being FANTASTIC! 💕📚

Branwen @KatieDid927 😁💕 @Kimberlone I know, right?! The goodreads ratings are ridiculously low and I can't understand why! 🤔 I mean I know Quentin is insufferable in the first book, but its still good! And his character growth in the rest of the series is incredible! 😀 5y

The Magician‘s Land by Lev Grossman was a great read. I only read chapter one, but even the one chapter was great! It was about Quentin Coldwater who heads to a bookstore and as the book store closes she is headed to the back room and people emerge through portals. Those people live in a magical world and take jobs to try and survive in the world of magic. This book didnt seem like it would catch my eye but it is very intriguing the more you read

Finished this engrossing #audiobook trilogy on a cooler morning :)
I don't read many trilogies but this wrapped up like I would like them too- not saccharine but not in a devastating-all-is-ended-forever way, which makes sense IMO because I dont think that's how anything works.
I believe the 2nd and 3rd were my favourites- less whiney, annoying Q.C. 🤣

Tamra That sounds delicious - I love vinegar. 😊 6y
Andrea4 @Tamra you should give it a go then! Super simple. Cooked mashed potatoes how you like, cook some kale (I steamed it above the potatoes), cook sausage how you like. Add all together or just kale and potatoes and eat sausage on the side and serve with butter and vinegar! 6y

A satisfying conclusion to The Magicians trilogy.

The first two books were focused on deconstructing popular fantasy worlds and showing what would happen if a bunch of self-involved teenagers were suddenly put in charge of ruling those worlds.

In the third book, the kids are older, wiser, and finally ready for a rollicking fantasy adventure.

So I actually finished all three books in this series over the course of my 2 1/2 week vacation and they were SO GOOD. This was the perfect conclusion to the story and I didn‘t find myself disappointed at all. I still think the 1st book was the best out of the three, and my favorite, but I didn‘t lose interesting while reading any of them. Definitely a good and entertaining choice! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

mcipher Have you seen the show? I like it better than the books. So freaking good. 6y
the-flashley @mcipher I just started it this week! I‘m not sure yet whether I like it better, but I am definitely enjoying it! I‘m still trying to get past the fact that my idea of what the characters look like doesn‘t 100% match the actors they chose.😅 Also that they replaced Janet. I actually do really like how it follows the books fairly closely, but still throws in enough differences to catch me off guard. (edited) 6y
mcipher I hope you love it! I guess they went with Margot because there were too many “J” names, from what I read. I love Margot though so I didn‘t mind. They definitely are more flashy TV people than the book characters. And the clothes are so self-consciously hilarious. It‘s campy fun. 😝 6y
the-flashley @mcipher oh definitely! It‘s super good and I do love Margo, so I really can‘t complain. I am already absolutely hooked. 6y

I would compare this series to Donna Tartt‘s The Secret History. The books revolve around a set of close-characters who are linked by college (albeit one for magicians), and there are extremely dark moments. That said, there is plenty of humour in the series, which is very reminiscent of the asides utilized by both Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. If you are a fan of fantasy who has read key books in the genre, the Magicians Trilogy is not to be missed.

The grass may need to be mowed, but nothing beats a slow Sunday reading!

Vinjii I just gave up on the first one after a 100 pages. Might try again 🤔 7y
Pruzy @Vinjii As I've been reading the series and chatting to people about it, I found that the series is very polarizing. People either love it or hate it. A chat with a bookseller when I was buying this third book makes me think it is because people think Quentin is too whiney? 7y
heikemarie @Pruzy @Vinjii Quentin is whiny, there is not one likable or empathetic character in the whole thing, their motivations feel paper thin... just my $0.02 but I hate read all three of them! I hate the tv show even more! 7y
See All 8 Comments
Pruzy @inwhichHeikereadsharder That's exactly the criticisms I hear of the series. Unfortunately, I don't see it and I like/emphasize with Quentin as a character, so I'm not sure what that says about me 😬 Should I be concerned? 7y
heikemarie @Pruzy ha, I don't think so! Never wrong to have comparatively more empathy I think ☺️ 7y
Vinjii @Pruzy I didn't mind Quentin. It just didn't grab my by page 100. Maybe I'll give it a 2nd try and see... I heard good things about book 2 and 3 :/ 7y
Pruzy @Vinjii Book 2 was amazing. Definitely, a different feel from the first and expands the series well. In my mind both 1 and 2 are tied for quality, but it is like comparing something riffing on Harry Potter to something riffing more on Narnia. 7y

Pruzy @Lola Wow! That is definitely on the premium end of the spectrum 7y
Lcsmcat I used to use a sheet of heavy-duty plastic that had weights on either side (in my case marbles) for cookbooks. You can't easily turn the page, but it keeps your cookbooks clean. And most recipes are all on one page. Mine was a gift so I don't know where it came from, but you could make one with a glue gun and a few minutes. 7y

Quentin, Plum, and crew take a #magiccarpetride in the big heist scene that opens the third book in this trilogy.

Are Quentin and his friends pretty despicable in The Magicians? Yes they are. But over the course of the next two books Quentin grows up. They all do. Well, except for Penny. He's pretty much consistently a total jerk.

One of the few series I've read where each book is better than the previous one. If you bailed, consider finishing
