pickIt had been YEARS since I read this (I think I read it in high school), and I remembered so little, it was like reading it for the first time! I know I watched the miniseries way back when, and I also remember very little of that—so it was all new!)
I was so impressed by the depth of spiritual reflection and growth explored through Christy‘s perspective here. There‘s a real wrestling with faith & vocation, and with the complexities of how to ⤵️

I remember enjoying this book as a teen but wasn't sure how it would hold up as an adult - but I found it completely engaging. Christy is just a likable character, so it makes the whole story work. She's genuine in her efforts to understand the world around, and I related so much to her desire to make her childhood faith something tangible and real. This is definitely a ⬇

Turns out this is a 1967 copy that belonged to my dad‘s mom. I‘m glad she stuck an address label inside so I‘d see it all these years later.
I really enjoyed learning about this time and community which I had little knowledge of before.
And what an ending!!!!

(thru ch27) We'll be wrapping up Christy in December. I am really enjoying this one. I appreciate that the whole moonshining thing isn't as clear-cut as it appeared at first - Dr. MacNeil's points about the lack of income and unfairness of some of the laws suddenly turns what initially seemed to be a very good/bad/obvious situation into something more nuanced and involved. I'm also enjoying Christy's enthusiasm and desire to know more/do better. ⬇

(thru ch21) Whew, there is a lot more drama than I remember!!! The whole thing with the new books and then them getting destroyed - so many feelings!! And now this stuff with the moonshiners and David trying to prove himself to the men in the community. Whew. I'm loving seeing Christy's friendship with Fairlight grow, though, and Christy's overall attitude towards the community and teaching evolve. Any thoughts or favorite moments to share?

(thru ch10; I haven't read today's chapter yet 😂) I think this is the cover of the edition my mom had when I was growing up. This was definitely one of the first “adult“ books I read. I've been thoroughly enjoying this reread. I really like Christy and feel like she is such a realistic character. I'm not a huge fan of David though; he's so condescending. Christy has faced some real dangers and some real life in the several weeks she has been ⬇

(thru ch5) Goodness, so much has happened already! I am remembering why I enjoyed this book so much in my teens. Like Christy, I grew up in a safe, happy, religious household, and while I love my family I can remember wanting more, wanting to do SOMETHING, wanting to find a way to make my beliefs more than just words and feelings, wanting to wrestle with those beliefs and make them my own, not just my parents'. In this readthrough, I already have⬇

In November we will be continuing to read the rollicking adventures of the Three Musketeers, but also will be starting another book: Christy, by Catherine Marshall. First published in 1967, Marshall drew on stories from her mother's experiences teaching in a remote area of eastern Tennessee circa 1912. I read this book as a teen an enjoyed it, but I'm interested to see what I think of it now...

've read the tagged book a about a couple of times or more. Recently dug it out of where I kept it while looking for something recently and now this morning I read a few lines and I'm getting hooked again. Since I don't like reading two novels at a time, maybe it will be my next read after White Teeth.
pickI didn‘t expect to like this book based on the description, but it was beautiful. I‘m an atheist and found the religion to be a lovely testament to one person‘s faith. Definitely read for a deep, personal story.

1️⃣ Books rarely make me cry. This is the first one that I can recall starting actual tears.
2️⃣ Both but way more likely to wear plaid.
3️⃣ Neither unless it‘s poutine in which case sort of both (not really). But I rarely have poutine.
4️⃣ Pop of course. I think the extremely Canadian response to 3 should make that clear.
I'm a day late but the prompt stuck with me. I generally don't like long books (and that was one of the reasons I thought I didn't like fantasy, all the "epic" world-building. ?) That said, I have such fond memories of reading Christy. I remember it was one of the first books I got from the adult fiction section at the library. I was so proud when I not only finished this tome but enjoyed it. I felt instantly matured. #FunFridayPhoto on Saturday.

The ending felt very abrupt, though—in spite of how long the book is, the final resolution really needed more fleshing out. That aside, this was a very worthwhile re-read ⤵️ 4w
