"New York Times "BestsellerWinner of the World Fantasy AwardOne of"New York"Magazine's 10 Best Books of the YearOne of NPR s 5 Best Works of Foreign Fiction The literary event of Halloween: a book of otherworldly power from Russia s preeminent contemporary fiction writer Vanishings and aparitions, nightmares and twists of fate, mysterious ailments and supernatural interventions haunt these stories by the Russian master Ludmilla Petrushevskaya, heir to the spellbinding tradition of Gogol and Poe. This book is next level amazing. It's like an adult version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I'm glad someone put these together and translated them into English.

I meant to save some of this and include it in my November list but I couldn't stop reading.

TheBookHippie Right ? I loved this one . 4y
vlwelser @TheBookHippie Have you read any of the others? I'm almost afraid because how could they all be this good? 4y

Yep, these “fairy tales“ are scary. In two ways: once there's the supernatural side. But there's also reality. The reality of living in the Soviet Union. Petrushevskayas characters are all suffering from cold, hunger and desillusions. Death often seems like relief. A relief not granted. No wonder the author wasn't allowed to publish for a long time...

Must read her other books! My favorites of these short stories were the fairytales. They‘re not Disney-like topics with princesses, but eerie like the original Grimm‘s fairytales. Think a sparse, dark Katherine Arden. Thanks for sending this @TheWordJar 🖤🖤🖤🖤

TheWordJar So glad you enjoyed it! Definitely one of my favorites! 6y

When I saw we were taking a trip to #Russia today I had to post about Ludmilla Petrushevskaya. If you are looking for dark, twisted stories, check her out. I‘ve read the tagged book and really enjoyed its fairy-tale-esque feel. Her other books have been on my TBR forever, but I would especially like to read her memoir.

#AugustIsATrip

LauraJ Great recommendation! 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you!! I‘ll add her to my tbr list! 6y

Librarian199509 I remember liking this collection when I read it and then realizing almost immediately that none of it stuck and I can't remember any of the stories at any level of detail. 6y
Dietz123 Based on the title, I‘m not super motivated to read it. 6y

I love Russian and Eastern European folktales and this is a modern version. I loved these short stories, the last part of the book was the strongest and when I couldn't put this down. If you've read the old folk stories you will recognise the bones of them in these but with a slightly more modern soviet era twist. The translation is wonderful sentences kept catching me and making me smile. #readingwomenchallenge #womenintranslation

ohyeahthatgirl I love Petrushevskaya! 6y
Weaponxgirl @ohyeahthatgirl I'm definitely going to look out for some more of her stuff now! 6y

Picked this up because it sounded creepy but meh. Maybe only one or two out of all of them were creepy to me.

What a weird, awesome, dark and twisted collection of modern fairy tales! Stories about a father, who finds his child in an abandoned house, an apocalypse, the places we go to when we die and so mich more. I did try to read one story a day, but I think they work better if you read it in little chunks at a time. I will definitely pick up more of Petrushevskaya's works 👍

#RussianLit2017

Ashley_Nicoletto I immediately looked this up on Amazon. This looks like something I need. 😂 7y
Kalalalatja @Ashley_Nicoletto if you like dark, magical, kinda scary, and weird stories, this is definitely for you! 😄 7y
mariaku21 Oooh by the cover alone looks good. Adding to the tbr list for "magical, kinda scary" 7y

My kind of not-so-#freakyFriday - only cakes and #RussianLit2017 for me. I have had a really busy week, and in #timeslikethese I like to treat myself a little extra (who am I kidding, I treat myself all the time!). But this Friday, this mean two cakes, two books and two hours of reading time. I'm switching between audio and print for C&P, so I'm getting through it pretty quickly 👍

Starting my #RussianLit2017 with these two. The tagged book will be my new fairytale-a-day book, and from the first tale I have read, it is going to be a dark ride!

Baba Yaga's Assistant looks fun and light, and that's what I need on this Monday night 👍

If you feel like joining in with some Russian lit of your own during October, feel free to use the hashtag, and tag me in your post 👏

Natasha.C.Barnes Ooo I love anything Baba Yaga related. Which is why I also want to read 7y

A stack of white books for @Cinfhen and the #bookcolortag 📚 I was a bit surprised by how many white books I could find on my shelves. These were the ones that could fit into the picture 😄

I have slept really badly and the weather is grey today, so I need something to cheer me up - a YELLOW stack of books. @4thhouseontheleft @Aninski @ferskner you up for it?

Kalalalatja @aeeklund I have had a nap and lots of coffee which have helped a lot! I was just one of those nights, I guess. Both my bf and I had trouble sleeping, it was really weird... 7y
Kalalalatja @monkeygirlsmama it is a short story collection with some wonderfully weird stories. I would definitely recommend it 👍 7y

Like a Russian version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, this book is a collection of folk tales with a frightening bent. #longtitle #booktober

TheWordJar This book was so much fun! Very dream-like in some stories. I like leaving it in a visible place because some people (*cough*non-readers) have great reactions to the title! 8y
Kirstin @TheWordJar Yes, the title is jarring for some(read-my mother)😂 I'm about halfway through the stories, reading them here and there. I love folklore. 8y
