If Beale Street Could Talk
If Beale Street Could Talk | James A Baldwin
In this honest and stunning novel, James Baldwin has given America a moving story of love in the face of injustice. Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin s story mixes the sweet and the sad. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche."

Finishing this means I‘ve about wrapped up my Baldwin year. An odd book in some ways, since Baldwin tones down the clever-coolness-intimacy for a simpler sort of intimacy in an uncomfortably sexist Harlem culture. But his ultimate purpose is to capture the prison experience for the one locked away and the family around them - and the tangible fear of police in NYC. It‘s simple on opening and powerful on closing. Need to check out the movie now...

"I hope that nobody has ever had to look at anybody they love through glass."

Even though I normally prefer to do the opposite I watched the movie this is based off of before reading this book. But that took nothing away from the experience of reading it. This is a true love story, it‘s beautiful to read and I was immediately invested in their story, their happiness, their heartbreak and everything in between.

This was my first Baldwin novel. I can see why it‘s a classic. Lots of interesting insights. I have mixed feelings about the way he wrote some of his female characters, though I LOVED Sharon, the protagonist‘s mother. The end is pretty abrupt. I look forward to checking out some literary essays on it.
Another great audio performance by Bahni Turpin!

I absolutely loved this. These families sucked me right in from moment one and I never wanted to stop listening. This is a sad but beautiful story. I want to read more Baldwin now. Also, this was narrated by Bahni Turpin, and I have listened to a bunch of her books now, but she did a particularly wonderful job of bringing these characters to life with her narration.

Emilymdxn I felt exactly the same about both the book and the narrator. She‘s probably one of the best audiobook readers out there💖 2mo

Amazing book. Baldwin touches on so many cultural and racial issues that are more relevant than ever today. Also, I love the style, the plot and the realism of the characters' voices. Wow.

Heartbreaking, infuriating, and entirely relevant today even though it was originally published in 1974. You would think in forty-five years, our community in the U.S. would be in a better place, but this could have been written yesterday😤

As always, Bahni Turpin‘s reading is perfect.

I hear the movie counterpart is gorgeous, so I‘ll be looking it up soon.

@CSeydel headed home! I didn't necessarily "enjoy" it, but Baldwin didn't write to entertain; he wrote to make you think. This was a masterclass in characterization. With depictions of the Black church, family rallying together for the birth of a child, Black love & the policing of Black bodies, I was in awe of the writing. Some things didn't age well, lack of chapters at times made it difficult to digest,& I wanted more closure at the end. 3.5⭐️s

Tish and Fonny's love life is changed forever when Fonny is falsely accused of rape and imprisoned. Tish soon has even more to deal with when she discovers she'd pregnant. Who'll get out first? Fonny or the baby?
And that title, what if Beale street could talk? Then Beale street would tell the truths it has witnessed, it would free Fonny and fight against racial injustice.
This was my first time ever reading Baldwin and I'm ready to read more.

Beautiful and heartbreaking. Real, raw, and incredibly moving. I cared so much about theses characters and longed for their escape from a terrible situation. The whole book felt like a tug of war between desperate hope and the crush of reality. Written almost 50 years ago but still so timely. Listened to this one and Bahni Turpin‘s narration is amazing.

One member of my book club said 'the racism got in the way of the plot', a comment which made me somewhat uncomfortable. It was a well written, human book and has launched me into somewhat of an obsession with Baldwin. However, I found the ending unsatisfying and I wish it had been longer with more chance to explore the characters #IfBealeStreetCouldTalk #JamesBaldwin #racism #bookclub

This novel totally broke my heart. James Baldwin creates characters like absolutely no one else, he‘s absolutely becoming one of my all time favourite writers. The relationship between the hopeful lovers (seriously some of the most beautiful writing about healthy, optimistic love I‘ve ever read) and the racist society which crushes all hope tortures you to read it but it‘s so important to read. I can‘t recommend enough

Such a sad poetic book that just... speaks to the state of America in the 1970s to today really. Still relevant both for the wrongful imprisonments but some on how women are often treated. It‘s good, it‘s hard, and I love the way Baldwin puts his words together. Now I plan on watching the movie.

How have I called myself a reader for several decades and not read anything previously by this brilliant man?

This novel touched me on so many deeply personal layers that I‘m still thinking about it daily. Yes, this is a story of severe injustice and anger and frustration but it is also such a beautifully wrought story of family and love and community.

I‘m only dinging it a half star because I wanted more of it. 4.5🌟
