#ThoughtfulThursday is dedicated to my Pop-Pop (Henry), who we lost to Covid last week; he was 96 yrs old. Henry had a 6th grade education, but a voracious appetite for learning. He loved reading biographies, histories and journals (Lewis & Clark was his favorite) & read the newspaper cover to cover each day. Breakfast was his favorite meal, he loved driving & trains. My house was built in his backyard & I‘m so grateful for all my memories. ⬇️

MoonWitch94 His favorite coat was a blue & black plaid coat (like this background) & he always wore a hat. He was a character, and will be missed deeply by all who knew him. ♥️ 1y
MoonWitch94 Everyone is invited to play! Tagging friends to get it started! 1y
Librarybelle What a special commemoration ❤️ 1y

MoonWitch94 @Librarybelle @Kshakal @TheSpineView @TheBookHippie Thank You! Growing up in his backyard was such a gift. I saw him nearly every day for the last 37 years! He told us recently (jokingly) that he was jealous my Grandmother (his Ex, who died 8 weeks ago) got to “go see the man upstairs” before him, so we‘ve been giggling about how he‘s no longer jealous. My grandparents were a funny pair. 1y

A literary breath of fresh frontier air. 😊 A truly remarkable achievement this epic quest was, though I‘m also very cognizant of the consequences in this pivotal moment for western Native American tribes.

I had a really good chuckle over Clark‘s observation about the ceaseless wind in the Dakotas. Some things haven‘t changed.

Eggs Tamra you are right about the ceaseless winds which make their snowstorms deadly! 4y
Tamra @Daisey that is on my bucket list! 4y

Tamra @Eggs 😜 There is absolutely no point of ever doing anything to hair aside from washing. 4y
ravenlee When we lived in Omaha the wind was the worst! It‘s my number one complaint about living there. 4y

TEArificbooks I loved reading this last year. Their journey was remarkable and they never wavered in their quest even when constant tragedy and danger faced them. 4y
Tamra @mdm139 agreed! 4y

My new nightly routine is to read a chapter of this book. I am finding it fascinating and wish I read it in school when we learned about Lewis and Clark. I love reading the different perspective of the same days's events. Sometimes we get both Lewis's and Clark's entry and one of their men's POV. I enjoy the layman's POV more than L&C's because his writing is more narrative and eloquent and he seems to have more education than L&C.

We visited Fort Clatsop in Astoria, Oregon last week and I came across this racist sign.

No, I don't suppose York was treated as a peer. I do think these are the kinds of things we white people tell ourselves to feel better about our American heroes owning slaves in this country that was founded as a racist society.

This is not acceptable.

When I got home I wrote 3 letters to the National Parks Service.

TrishB Be interested in the reply! 7y
Texreader Good for you!!!! 7y
Texreader Btw, I loved reading about Lewis and Clark in this book about a most amazing woman: 7y
becausetrains Thank you for sending letters, @BookInMyHands - there are some closet racists in NPS. I ran across a few in the National Capital Region re: whitewashing Frederick Douglass' story. 7y
BookishFeminist @becausetrains they aren't closet racists if they are making signs like this 🤡 but for real though @BookInMyHands thank you for sending a letter! I hope they listen and take it down. 7y

LeahBergen @saresmoore It is actually but not in a "read-it-straight-through-from-page-one" way. It's way more of a "dip in and out of" read! 7y
