The Assistants
The Assistants | Camille Perri
A wry and astute debut about a young Manhattanite whose embezzlement scam turns her into an unlikely advocate for the leagues of overeducated and underpaid assistants across the city. Tina Fontana is the hapless but brazen thirty-year-old executive assistant to Robert Barlow, the all-powerful and commanding CEO of Titan Corp., a multinational media conglomerate. Shes excellent at her job and beloved by her famous bossbut after six years of making his reservations for restaurants shed never get into on her own and pouring his drinks from bottles that cost more than her rent, shes bored, broke, and just a bit over it all. When a technical error with Roberts travel-and-expenses report presents Tina with the opportunity to pay off the entire balance of her student loan debt with what would essentially be pocket change for her boss, she struggles with the decision: Shes always played by the rules. But its such a relatively small amount of money for the Titan Corporationand for her it would be a life-changer . . . The Assistants speaks directly to a new generation of women who feel stuck and unable to get ahead playing by the rules. It will appeal to all of those who have ever asked themselves, How is it that after all these years, we are still assistants? From the Hardcover edition.

This was a quick read which didn't quite live up to my hopes. Tina is the assistant to an obscenely rich media mogul. An expense report error results in her having access to exactly what she needs to pay off her school loans and finally start being able to save. She takes the opportunity but someone noticed and wants enough for her own loan. The situation spirals from there. We're given multiple examples of the ridiculous, unnecessary

bookandbedandtea money the boss spends so we won't feel bad about these thefts but I'm still torn. Do these young women deserve to be crushed under the weight of their debt & inability to get ahead? Certainly not! Are their actions wrong? Yes. The ways the scheme was discovered & resolved felt very flat & anticlimactic to me. I may have had fewer moral debates with myself if this were a more dynamic story. 😉 The MC was very uneven and boring. 6mo

The story was interesting and really brought home the inequality of the USA system for me, but the MC was rather frustrating. I wanted more about WHY she was so enamored of her evil corporate boss, and WHY it didn‘t bother her to work for him, for this book to be a pick. But it was a fun read, and I did enjoy the idea of a group of female underpaid and under appreciated assistants working together against evil corporate (male) bosses. 2.5/5 stars

For some reason, reading about financial crimes makes me nervous. My intense dislike for the handsome attorney nearly ruined the book for me.

First, I adored the tagged book.
Second, I'm using it as an opportunity to share that my colleague and I are currently seeking a new assistant. It's entry-level, but we are hoping for someone with a bit of office experience, a strong interest in book publishing, and exceptional organizational skills.
In short, you get to talk about books all day long and convince others to buy said books. Please share with anyone that might be interested! (NYC)

My only thought that kept running through my mind when I closed this book, “Can I sign up for their services?” If you‘re a 20-something with student loans, read this book and then let‘s make magic happen together.

A delightfully fun, light read. The Assistants is a great novel about women, sticking it to the man, and overcoming injustice, but without too much weight. Although the student loan debt situation is a serious one, I was constantly amused. My only criticism is that the second half was a bit rushed- but this got me through a busy week. It was good for a laugh.

This one has been on my TBR pile for a long time and I think I originally picked it up because a Litten recommended it. I needed something lighter after Five Chimneys and it delivered. Fluffy and fun with some good lines, but it lacked fully developed characters. I think it would make a good movie or mini series if they put some time into character development.

Stayed up until 1AM finishing Salt to the Sea and I definitely shed a few tears. It's a powerful book with characters that draw you in and stick with you. My review will be up on The Bookly Club soon, so stay tuned. // Up next is The Assistants by Camille Perri and I'm super excited for it. After a couple heavy books this month I'm ready for something fun and this sounds perfect. What are you reading this weekend?

#TBRtemptation post 5! This debut novel centers around Tina, a 30-year-old NYU grad & exec assistant to billionaire Robert Barlow. She works hard but still can't get ahead. Then an expense report mistakenly reimburses her for a lot of money. Should she report the error or become debt-free? She pays off her loans, but accounting assistant Emily catches her, & now Tina must pay Emily's or be ruined. The office heats up! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Have about 30 minutes left in this book and it's done. So far, it more... meh than yeah. Here's hoping the Hawks and Captain Toews are in better shape than their last game and better than the disaster that was the Pens' games last night. #readingandwatchinghockey

writerlibrarian At mid point of the first period, it's 2-1 Hawks. Panarin and Kane put Chicago on the board and an ahead. 5 minutes to go, Hawks put another goal in and out went Vasilevskiy. Captain Toews is pouting in the Sin Bin. Reversal of fortune by the end of the second, it's 4 all. After the Hawks led 4-1. Ouch. 🤕 We are in OT after a dull third. Tampa win it with 35 s to go in OT. 5-4 Tampa. (edited) 8y

Hoping to finish this one tonight while listening to the Pens going to war against their eternal rivals, Flyers. Hawks took a beating last night and the Leafs are in trouble if they lose Andersen. #readingandlisteningtohockey

writerlibrarian Pens have a 1-0 lead on a goal put in the net by the Phillies goalie. Cullen got the credit. Flyers tied near the end of the period. Never a good thing. Again almost at the end of the period, Philly scores. ☹️ It's 4-1 Flyers, Pens are having a really, bad, no good game. Pens lose 6-2. Not a good day for Pens fans. (edited) 8y

Saturday is Hockey Night in Canada. Leafs battle the Sabres. Captain Toews and the Hawks are in Florida. Go rookies! #readingandwatchinghockey

writerlibrarian Here we go. 😁🏒 Agressive hockey from both Toronto and Sabres. It's 2-1 Sabres. Still no goal in Florida. 2 goals in the first 5 minutes of the second period. Matthews for Toronto. 3-2 Buffalo with Andersen out for the Leafs. Florida are up 1-0. Buffalo is up 4-2 with two PP goals. Huberdeau is having a 3 points nights it's 3-0 Florida. Eichel adds to Buffalo's lead. It's 5-2. (edited) 8y

Not one, not two but three games this evening. Captain Toews, captain Crosby with teeth back and rookies on the high of last night win. Definitely a good night for hockey. #readingandlisteningtohockey

writerlibrarian After 20 minutes, it's no score in the Sens and Pens game. Lots of manly posturing and borderline vicious hits. Not a fun game to watch. On the rookies' front, rookies rule! Both goals have the rookies' paws all over them. Leafs lead 2-1 against not Canes that's the Habs, but the Devils. Leafs' rookies add another goal assisting in JVR's goal. Bonino scores the opening goal on a PP play. 1-0 Pens. Kane scores with Toews on assist on PP play. 1-0 (edited) 8y
writerlibrarian On a bad penalty Sens score it's tied at 1. Pens are going in OT. Leafs are still ahead 3-2 with less than 5 minutes left. Hawks are tied with Dallas. Rookies win 4-2. (edited) 8y

writerlibrarian The St-Pat aka the rookies are up 1-0. Matts finally broke is goal dry spell. Chicago, on a really nice play from Captain Toews tied the game. 1-1 tie. We are going into OT. With 7 seconds, Hawks scores. So the Hawks' road trip in Eastern Canada was kinda fruitful. (edited) 8y

This book is very good for what it is. It is a light novel about low-level employees at a huge media company who decide to steal from their boss to pay off their enormous student loan. I enjoyed it well enough. It is a nice distraction from the news and the real world which is all you can ask for from a book. Question: what is a better/more correct term for "chick lit"? I absolutely hate that expression. Thank you

cariashley Ugh I hate the term chick lit too. And I don't like "women's fiction" either. I like just "contemporary fic" bc why does it have to be gendered? 8y
KendallMorganHall Very very good point. I think I use a gender term when I know my female friends would love it but my male friends wouldn't read past the first page. But having.said that, I probably won't use the term chick lit again. 8y
