A Discovery of Witches | Deborah E. Harkness

Mehso-so

Imagine being a supernatural of the vampire, witch or demon variety, and having people telling you what to do, always. I can't imagine vampires would want to live forever with this sort of bureaucratic bullshit dominating their lives. I listened to the audiobook. The narrator was adept at the various accents but the weird way she drags out her "twooo"s grates. A book this large would benefit from having a second narrator of the male variety. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The underlying premise was good, but this was entirely too long. This falls into nearly insta-love territory. Wine, manuscripts, yoga, food...I think the only foods I'm not certain Matthew eats are tacos, pizza, and quince. While I'm on Matthew, I did not get his appeal. He's controlling and I think he thrives on crisis. (1500 years on Earth might do that to you) Diana was boring. I understand why she doesn't embrace her magic, ⬇️ 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick but considering how the supernaturals didn't trust the other species, you'd think her aunt would have insisted she learn something. The Bishop house was fun, I liked Hamish, and I am intrigued by the events that are leading to book 2. I haven't decided if I hate myself enough to continue with the series. 😁 3y

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3y
aperfectmjk I agree about the second narrator. It's such a long book, but I guess because of how the chapters are written it would have been hard to switch up narrators. 3y
DieAReader @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 👏🏻 I completely agree with your opinion on this one. Took me forever to read it & I disliked more than I liked. That being said, I procrastinated & dreading starting book 2. I was “inspired” to give it some attention yesterday & can say that so far (chapter 11/42) & I‘m enjoying it. There is a lot of character banter that I‘ve really gotten a kick out of. I like it much better than the 1st (as it stands now)😉 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Squidget Good to hear that book 2 seems better from someone with similar feelings about book 1. I think I'll hold off until January and try to limit my listening to 1-2 hours daily so I'm not burnt out by it. This might be a case where I'd enjoy the show more if I gave it a try. 3y

I am not one for legal books, fiction or non-fiction, but I joined in on the #SundsyBuddyRead. This is very thorough, giving us some background about the Borden family and the aftermath of those vicious murders. We move to details of the court case, with day by day descriptions of the case and includes black & white photos of the crime scenes, and closes with the verdict and a brief aftermath. This is DENSE. Well researched, but lots of names ⬇️

Pickpick

The October #ThatsClassic pick. Some of the book feels repetitive, but still a good early gothic horror. Perhaps it's knowledge of how it all pans out, but it didn't feel very suspenseful. As others mentioned before, it's not exactly a female friendly world we're viewing but that's how women were regarded in the 1890s. Thanks for the push to reread it 25 years later @Annie1215

The overall story was good with a strong ending, but I have 2 gripes. 1. Niki is deaf (yay disability inclusivity) but since she's excellent at reading lips, there is zero sign language and it's super easy for her to follow along with group conversations. 2. Her boyfriend Terry calls her Funny Face, which isn't weird on it's own, but considering her always calls her that, especially in serious situations, grated my nerves. Good for 2 hours of fun.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 3y

jb72 My daughter loved the Stine books. 3y
Andrew65 You are doing great. 👏👏👏 3y
CocoReads That‘s great work. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @jb72 I probably read some when I was younger but sadly I don't remember. This is my first in recent memory. I did order a newer one that just didn't get read this month. I'm curious to see if there's a huge difference in style. YA seems to be a totally different ballgame the last 10-15 years. 3y

2 interwoven stories here: Snyder's is set in 1925 Hollywood and focuses on actress Pearl. Stephen King wrote the second which gives us the origin story of an 1880s Old West Outlaw, Skinner Sweet. It's a bit of a new twist on the vampire and the ones are vicious, not sparkly lovers.

The Hallo-Wiener | Dav Pilkey

Last weekend I visited my brother & his family so I had some fun reading to my younger niece. Hallo-wiener was our favorite & the two witch books were our least favorite. It was just over an hour of time for 6 'thons.

With one day left for #CocoTurns50

One week into #CocoTurns50.

Progress so far :

1. Read 3616/ 4000 pages

✅2. Read 12 / 10 books

3 Read 1/4 NetGalley books

Looks like I should exceed on two targets, but fail miserably on the third one. Really need to prioritise my net galley books over the next week and catch up on reviews.

9 hours for #Deweys24HourReadathon! Now time for bed. 💤

But first, points. Today was also the last day of #Ghostathon20 & #FraterFestRAT. I also finished the tagged book and Disfigured by Amanda LeDuc for #DisabilityReadathon. It was fantastic! So so good. Definitely worthy of its own review when I‘m less tired. In total, +1,176 points.

Night, Littens! Hope your #readathon-ing is going well! ✨

BookwormM Bit of a depressing day here spent all morning getting house ready for viewing the estate agent turned up 10 minutes late it was an agent who had never seen the house clearly hadn‘t read the details didn‘t try and sell it to the viewers and they were here all off 5 minutes. Hubby really annoyed. We plan to take house of the market as soon as contract up as Covid means nothing is happening nothing we are interested in buying. Depressing all over 3y
Andrew65 @BookwormM I‘d feel the same as your husband. 3y

kezzlou85 Been a quiet day here. My grandad came out of hospital which was good. Not covid thankfully. He's 91 so doing well really. 3y
JacqMac @BookwormM How frustrating. 3y
JacqMac @kezzlou85 That‘s great news! I live for any good news these days. 3y
JacqMac I‘m just readathoning over here. Dressed really warm and avoiding the snow filled outside. I also drank enough tea to float away. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Having a lazy day. Took a leisurely walk with the pup and frolicked in some leaves. @kezzlou85 That's great about your grandfather! 3y
CocoReads First day back at work started off with a no call no show pharmacist. Luckily, my brother in law anticipated this so I called him and he came in. Poor guy is now in the middle of like 12 straight days. But otherwise we had a pretty smooth day. Now time to read for a bit. 3y
TrishB Quiet day doing not much. I find I crave them after manic work weeks. 3y
Andrew65 @TrishB Totally agree! 3y
kezzlou85 @JacqMac yeah me too. Was worried when we went in but luckily he's okay. X 3y
tracey38 @BookwormM oh, that really is depressing, I'm so sorry. @kezzlou85 so happy to hear about your granddad! Happy news! @CocoReads wow! Is it a new pharmacist? That's just insane. Your poor brother-in-law. @TrishB same here. Had a hectic workweek so having as much of a lazy weekend as possible. 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I liked that it was set in Florida, near Sarasota (if I recall correctly). It‘s a divergence for him, but I think he lives half the year in Florida. I liked that book! Enjoy! 3y
kezzlou85 @tracey38 thank you. Such great news for us all. My two girls think the absolute world of him because he's so funny. 3y
CocoReads @tracey38 no, he‘s not new. He‘s near retirement and has been on vacation. Pretty sure he forgot he was supposed to come In today because he‘s on vacation next week too. It‘s fine, just annoying. 3y
TheSpineView I'm running late. Saturday was busy with trying to get a project done around the house. It did allow for some good audiobook time. 3y
IamIamIam Glad you got to do some reading! We had my nephew's birthday yesterday so we got together with the family. Relaxing today before the grind tomorrow. 👌 3y
tracey38 @kezzlou85 aww, that's sweet. I'm glad you all have this good news. ❤ 3y
tracey38 @CocoReads very annoying and he should be able to keep up with his schedule better as a professional. Hugs! 3y
CocoReads @tracey38 thanks. Today has been better, my BIL was the scheduled pharmacist so it‘s just him and I again. Luckily we work fairly well together 3y
