Well this was a bit different! Split into 3 sections with the first giving the background of the case & the main players with alternative scenarios of what could have happened. The second section details the evidence of the case. At the end of the second section, the reader can register their decision online as to whether they believe, based on the evidence, that Camb was guilty of misadventure, guilty of murder, or guilty of manslaughter. (Cont.)

OutsmartYourShelf The third section then gives the author's view of what they think happened & it pretty much tallied with mine. Now the reconstructions may have been slightly melodramatic in parts, but I thought it was an intriguing way to approach a true crime case without being ghoulish. Apparently there are several other books in the series, & I plan on reading those too. 4🌟

I mostly enjoyed reading this but I didn't get the sense of Rulloff being some criminal mastermind. Whilst he was undoubtedly extremely intelligent, in my view a great deal of Rulloff's 'genius', like Jack the Ripper, was down to the luck of committing his crimes before the advent of forensic science & the widespread use of photography. (Continued in comments)

OutsmartYourShelf Furthermore, I know doctors in the nineteenth-century had no concept of the character of psychopaths, but it was maddening to read about person after person falling for his schtick. It also became a little repetitive in places. Overall it was interesting but I was left feeling a little disappointed. 3.5🌟

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Icon Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley

Mehso-so

Like the previous books this is a fast-paced read & the subject is rather dark. There's also a hint of the occult about the murders but I was expecting something more considering the first book of the series. In fact, I found this one a little less riveting than the previous books, & that's possibly because there was quite a lot of focus on the main characters' love-lives & I'm never a big fan of that. (Continued in comments)

OutsmartYourShelf I prefer it when relationships stay in the background in crime thrillers but that's a personal preference. The main characters are are likeable as ever & I can see this partnership continuing over more books. Overall I rate this a solid 3⭐read.

My thanks to the author & publishers, Bloodhound Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Finally got to start the latest in the brilliant Roy Grace series, book 16. As always this was an excellent read but felt a bit different, initially we find Roy working in London, and there didn‘t seem enough of him or of his team, and the team meetings which are the real strengths of this series for me. However despite this I was hooked throughout and wanted to continue reading. Left on a real cliff hanger so now need to wait a year!

With one day left for #CocoTurns50

One week into #CocoTurns50.

Progress so far :

1. Read 3616/ 4000 pages

✅2. Read 12 / 10 books

3 Read 1/4 NetGalley books

Looks like I should exceed on two targets, but fail miserably on the third one. Really need to prioritise my net galley books over the next week and catch up on reviews.

BookwormM Bit of a depressing day here spent all morning getting house ready for viewing the estate agent turned up 10 minutes late it was an agent who had never seen the house clearly hadn‘t read the details didn‘t try and sell it to the viewers and they were here all off 5 minutes. Hubby really annoyed. We plan to take house of the market as soon as contract up as Covid means nothing is happening nothing we are interested in buying. Depressing all over 4y
Andrew65 @BookwormM I‘d feel the same as your husband. 4y

kezzlou85 Been a quiet day here. My grandad came out of hospital which was good. Not covid thankfully. He's 91 so doing well really. 4y
JacqMac @BookwormM How frustrating. 4y
JacqMac @kezzlou85 That‘s great news! I live for any good news these days. 4y
JacqMac I‘m just readathoning over here. Dressed really warm and avoiding the snow filled outside. I also drank enough tea to float away. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Having a lazy day. Took a leisurely walk with the pup and frolicked in some leaves. @kezzlou85 That's great about your grandfather! 4y
CocoReads First day back at work started off with a no call no show pharmacist. Luckily, my brother in law anticipated this so I called him and he came in. Poor guy is now in the middle of like 12 straight days. But otherwise we had a pretty smooth day. Now time to read for a bit. 4y
TrishB Quiet day doing not much. I find I crave them after manic work weeks. 4y
Andrew65 @TrishB Totally agree! 4y
kezzlou85 @JacqMac yeah me too. Was worried when we went in but luckily he's okay. X 4y
tracey38 @BookwormM oh, that really is depressing, I'm so sorry. @kezzlou85 so happy to hear about your granddad! Happy news! @CocoReads wow! Is it a new pharmacist? That's just insane. Your poor brother-in-law. @TrishB same here. Had a hectic workweek so having as much of a lazy weekend as possible. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I liked that it was set in Florida, near Sarasota (if I recall correctly). It‘s a divergence for him, but I think he lives half the year in Florida. I liked that book! Enjoy! 4y
kezzlou85 @tracey38 thank you. Such great news for us all. My two girls think the absolute world of him because he's so funny. 4y
CocoReads @tracey38 no, he‘s not new. He‘s near retirement and has been on vacation. Pretty sure he forgot he was supposed to come In today because he‘s on vacation next week too. It‘s fine, just annoying. 4y
TheSpineView I'm running late. Saturday was busy with trying to get a project done around the house. It did allow for some good audiobook time. 4y
IamIamIam Glad you got to do some reading! We had my nephew's birthday yesterday so we got together with the family. Relaxing today before the grind tomorrow. 👌 4y
tracey38 @kezzlou85 aww, that's sweet. I'm glad you all have this good news. ❤ 4y
tracey38 @CocoReads very annoying and he should be able to keep up with his schedule better as a professional. Hugs! 4y
CocoReads @tracey38 thanks. Today has been better, my BIL was the scheduled pharmacist so it‘s just him and I again. Luckily we work fairly well together 4y
