I‘m not sure how I feel about this book. It was super dark. I think I need to read the second one now to really know what to think. The characters are really interesting. Each of them has something different to break your heart and the book itself is just very bleak. I did not expect it to end the way it did which is probably why I am conflicted on how I feel about it as a whole.

I read 4 books and watched 2 movies and 6 spooky episodes and tallied up a bunch of readathon points - no bingos yet! Favorite book so far this month is The Golden Enclaves (but not very spooky season-y!) and the tagged book was the last one I finished, and was a low pick. Should have been higher bc of all the Poe refs, but I just struggle with YA lately. This was my #bookspin this month.

I picked this up, lured in by the Poe references (and certainly wasn't disappointed there) but this felt too much like a YA written for younger readers for me to love it. I enjoyed theultiple POVs and I'd love to actually know what was going on...just not enough to pick up the second book in this duology.

I enjoyed this book very much. Its about Tess, a young woman whose parents passed away and she is left living with her one eyed grandfather at the "White Trash Zoo". Tess is determined to find out what really happened to her parents so she takes her friend, the last person to see her parents alive, and begins her interrogation using some interesting techniques. Loved the nods to Poe. 4 ?

This was a reread for me. But book 2 is coming out soon and i needed a refresher. I loved this book so much. It's a Poe retelling where a girl Tess, shackles her best friend to the call in the party house basement and begins slow torture to get her tell what happened to Tess parents. You all have the White Trash Zoo (think Tiger King), with the panther on the loose, and everything else. This book is just awesome.

Took me a minute to get into this one, but it was ultimately so good! I really liked seeing all of Tress and Felicity's rocky history, and it felt so realistic that even when they hated each other, there was still a genuine bond underneath. Not sure the panther chapters really added anything to the story, though. #yalit #retellings

Whoa. I devoured it. With many references to Edgar Allen Poe‘s work, this book is intense, dark, and twisty. I ❤️ it so much I was about to go to the bookstore & get the sequel, but it isn‘t being released until March. Bah! 🛑: bullying, torture, (implied) mistreatment of animals, death of dog, implied racism (albeit not a focus of the book but present at times) @LibrarianRyan & @MaleficentBookDragon you both were right! This is a great 📕.

Dark, weird, but good. Not sure if I‘d recommend it for everyone, but I rounded it up to a 4/5 ⭐️

Mindy McGinnis' books are so dark and so twisty - I loved every minute of this one! I stayed up way too late reading it, tweeted on my work account about how good it was, and now I have a 4 person wait list of students and teachers wanting to read it. Apparently I need to up my Twitter game if I want this to keep happening!

This was bonkers: a YA cross between Poe and The Tiger King. I‘d have liked more resolution at the end, but this one gets bonus points for Panther Vision! #audiostitching

It‘s been 7 years since Tress Montors parents disappeared without a trace and she knows only one person with them that night that knows what happened, her ex best friend- Felicity Turnado. She‘ll get her truth even if she has to trap Felicity one brick at a time.

Wow! This book! It‘s was freaking nutso but in such a good way. After that cliffhanger I need book 2 now! This author is always an auto buy for me. Really enjoy her writing.

This book is a modern day, YA retelling of some of Edgar Allan Poe's works, and OMG does the author throw references to enough of them in here - I lost count. I am a HUGE McGinnis fan, and a Poe fan, so my expectations were really high for this book. But whereas McGinnis's characters usually feel deep and developed, in this book they felt kind of shallow and flat. ⬇️

I really enjoyed this YA Thriller with all of its references to Edgar Allan Poe stories. Will definitely be picking up the next book when it comes out next year. #BookSpinBingo

I should‘ve waited until book #2 was closer to coming out...because this literally feels like it ends right in the middle of the story. We learned almost nothing about why Tress was building a brick wall around her once best friend other than that she did some terrible things to her, that was not necessarily her doing but we never find out what happened to Tress‘s parents on the night they disappeared. ⬇

Warning: It‘s the first title in a duology so you‘ll have to wait a while for the second installment!

This is a bat shit crazy book, in ALL the right ways. What the hell just happened?
This book has left me with a huge book hangover and I don't know how I'm going to make I until 2022 for the sequel. It's too much. I have so man questions. You should read this one. I need to talk abut it.

Had some time left today so I went back and finished this weird little read. God, I love Mindy McGinnis! Any time I pick something up from her I never know what I'm going to get. YA Poe retelling of The Cask of Amontillado with 3 narrators.. .one being a big cat from a back yard "Hillbilly Zoo".

How can you NOT want to read this?

This retelling of Edgar Allen Poe‘s The Cask of Amontillado pulled me in immediately. I loved this book. Tress and Felicity are such real, gritty characters. You are rooting for them both to succeed and fail. Seeing things in each of their points of view was so interesting. I am ready for book two now. I highly recommend this book. This story is super unique. There are so many things going on. The story is told in multiple points of view including the view of the animals at the zoo. I was privileged to listen to this as an audiobook. I was hooked. I binged it and could not stop. I had to know what happened next!!! I still need to know what happens next. This book is one of the best horror/thriller books for YA I have read

A retelling of Poe with Mindy McGinnis raw, dark and gritty writing is the story I didn't know I needed. I loved the play on names and how she twisted the story to make it fit her style just perfectly. Exceptional story that kept me drawn in. Betrayal of friendship, big cats, seeking revenge, and a long waited answer to the question of what happened to her parents.

In traditional Mindy McGinnis style...this book was fucking weird and I loved it

I knew nothing about this book when I requested it on audiobook I just knew it was by an author I liked. Damn this book is good. And by chance it takes place on Halloween. So double good for me. I‘m addicted. I‘m board and started this at work but I‘m pretty sure I‘m going to listen to it strait through the evening until it‘s over.

The Initial Insult is a story of friendship, misunderstanding, prejudice, and loss. There is a mystery at its center but there is also a cleverly crafted horror underneath all of the other layers. So far, this is the best Poe inspired tale that I‘ve read and while I can‘t even imagine what new terror awaits me in part two, I‘m looking forward to finding out!
