I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are
I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are | Rachel Bloom
39 posts | 43 read | 14 to read
In the vein of Mindy Kaling, Ali Wong, and Amy Poehler, a collection of hilarious personal essays, poems and even amusement park maps on the subjects of insecurity, fame, anxiety, and much more from the charming and wickedly funny creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Rachel Bloom has felt abnormal and out of place her whole life. In this exploration of what she thinks makes her "different," she's come to realize that a lot of people also feel this way; even people who she otherwise thought were "normal." In a collection of laugh-out-loud funny essays, all told in the unique voice (sometimes singing voice) that made her a star; Rachel writes about everything from her love of Disney, OCD and depression, weirdness, and female friendships to the story of how she didn't poop in the toilet until she was four years old; Rachel's pieces are hilarious, smart, and infinitely relatable (except for the pooping thing).

A must read for fans of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend!
Rachel Bloom is such a funny, unapologetically real human being and that is never more evident than in her book. She openly talks about her triumphs and failures, proudest moments and her most embarrassing ones.
I cannot recommend listening to the audiobook more, it‘s like part book, part Broadway musical, and all fantastic.

Ok- don‘t hate me. I think most people would like this book (as The Storygraph reviews confirm), but I just don‘t think I like her style. I also didn‘t like Crazy ex gf, so there you go. I will say I enjoyed the first half (childhood and growing up stuff) a bit more than the second (more recent career).

This was so creative and funny! Not your typical memoir in any sense of the word. Loved it!

I got this for my husband for his birthday (because we stan Rachel Bloom in this house) but I read it before him because I was too excited to wait. Her writing is so unique and funny, you can hear her voice shine through in such an endearing way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After a couple of mundane reads, this was a light and refreshing read. Funny and reminiscent of Judy Bloom, definitely a pick if you‘re looking for something funny. #chicklit

So I love Crazy Ex-Girlfriend! The show is funny, musical, delightful, and everything fun you can find in a tv show. Rachel Bloom is not a tv character though. I hate to give bad reviews to memoirs because I'm not saying your life isn't good, she is just so very vulgar. Trust me when I say I can be too, but she went seven steps past what I enjoy reading so it wasn't for me. You may love it, and I hope you do honestly because she can be funny.

I always liked Rachel Bloom in Crazy Ex Girlfriend. She is super awkward but also very relatable. I thought this book was funny and it definitely kept my interest and made me smile. She is very much unapologetically herself and I really like that about her. This book was exactly what I expected and I thought it was a really fun read especially on audio.

Alfoster Crazy Ex-girlfriend was hilarious!🥰🤣 3y

Fine, fine. I‘ll clean, but I‘m listening to my audiobook while I do it. Clean kitchen achieved! Even my cat, Basil, noticed 😁 #audiocleaning #catsoflitsy

⭐⭐⭐⭐
If I'm being honest, I bought this book for 2 reasons: The nostalgia brought on by the cover, and exposure to a couple of really good reviews. I didn't know who Rachel Bloom is, and I have never seen her in anything, but she seemed like someone I'd want to be friends with, because I, too, am not "normal". I read the first half, and then borrowed the audiobook to listen to the rest. Both excellent options for consuming this quirky book. ?

I‘m not a nonfiction/memoir person, but I love Rachel Bloom. Her honesty and irreverence never fail to crack me up. I‘m so glad I read this in audio form because I‘m sure the print version can‘t compare with Rachel‘s storytelling and singing and audio-exclusive tangents (“In the book there‘s a box, but you can just draw one for yourself”, “I‘ll do different voices so you know who‘s who”). Great road trip listen. #teachersoflitsy #memoir #audiobook

I was looking for a sort of funny palate cleanser, and I got it. Expectations met! I think this would be even funnier if you were a theater kid because a lot of the first half is jokes about that. #audiobook

I read this because Bloom is the star and co-creator of my favorite show, but I think anyone would love it. Bloom is hilarious, even as she gets personal with her own mental health journey.

Nothing earth shattering here; I found this just mildly entertaining. If I‘m being honest, I picked this up because of the title and cover lol. This is a memoir in essays that weren‘t really my brand of funny. The author is my age and there were several essays I could relate to because of this. Rachel Bloom is known for the show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which I haven‘t seen yet. I‘ll have to look it up but I‘m not sure it‘s going to be for me.

SarahBradley My sentiments exactly on this one! 4y

Sorry for the poor formatting, this was for my IG story but I wanted to share it here, too! Everything I read in March. I didn't finish If on a Winter's Night yet because I took a break to finally finish the Rachel Bloom book I started in February.

I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are is a memoir where Rachel Bloom discusses feeling like she wasn‘t normal and not fitting in. The book is a collection of funny, somewhat random stories. This book seemed very honest which is important to me when choosing a memoir.

Thank you Grand Central Publishing.

I kind of dislike it when authors say something similar to “forgive those who bullied you”. I mean i don‘t set aside time to hex them or think bad thoughts but if a former bully tries to friend me on socials I‘m happily pressing delete. And if I see them in person I ignore them if possible. How would you deal with a former bully?

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I was more teased than bullied. I was a fringe popular kid first a couple years. They protected me against the less-popular but liked to pick on me. Small town, so they grew out of it and I got over it. We're FB friends, but none of us are close or really even acknowledge each other. I've connected with others a lot more. If it was worse, I would do as you said and delete/ ignore. 4y
Moonprismpower @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I have a friend who was popular across groups. She was goth and had a lot of friends and bullies. I was mostly ignored. But a few rude comments and actions in school are things I recall and at present if those people try to befriend me I think back on that time and consider my mental health and if I care to learn if they‘ve changed and then I usually ignore or delete. No need for drama. Thank you for sharing. 4y

In the center is a pouch I couldn‘t resist.
1. I couldn‘t pass up a John Lewis book especially at half off
2. Loved Kaur‘s other 2 books
3. This gave me Babysitters Club vibes and reading the insert she sounds like my kind of people.
4. HELL YES! Angie Thomas! I‘m so excited for this book.
5. I‘ve seen mixed reviews on this but I had to.
6. I‘ve seen nothing but good things about this book.

This horrible teacher.
😒
Ever have a bad experience with a teacher who is supposed to be professional but instead was a jerk? I had a middle school teacher who told me that another teacher didn‘t like me. And I had a high school teacher who told me I wasn‘t feminist enough. F*ck those teachers, they are the ones with the problem, not me.

TheAromaofBooks I had a college professor tell me that I should really stop wearing skirts because they just signaled my willingness to submit to the patriarchy or something equally nonsensical & frankly none of her business. I wore them to her class every day for the rest of the term. 🙄 4y
Moonprismpower @TheAromaofBooks omg. What a horrible professor! I‘m so impressed by you standing up for yourself. 4y
Lreads My first grade teacher bullied me. She ridiculed me frequently in front of the other students. I was only 6 years old. After a while my father figured out what was going on and complained to the principal who then talked to that teacher. 4y
Moonprismpower @QuietlyLaura horrible...that is the meanest worst teacher. I hope she was fired eventually I‘m glad your dad stood up for you. Hugs. 4y

I‘ll admit I almost gave up on this...Rachel Bloom was just being so very Rachel Bloom!🤣 There are some TMI moments early on about things like her pooping/potty training issues as a little one. This book heavily focuses on her childhood, which I often don‘t care too much about with celebs. I enjoyed the last third or so of the book much more as it focused on her adult years and included some CEGF stories! Her audiobook narration was a lot of fun!

If you like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, you need to read this. I would suggest listening to it, bc Rachel reads it. She's funny, and outlandish, and a bit crazy, and relatable and real. She mostly tells stories from her past, all the way through to how she got around censorship for CEG's songs and the birth of her child this year.

As a fan of Rachel Bloom and Crazy Ex Girlfriend I was always going to like this memoir so my "pick" was kind of a given. Her writing voice is so strong I felt like I could hear her narrating despite reading the print version. Not every essay hit the mark, as usual for a collection like this, but overall I really enjoyed this book. I hope she'll write another, but mostly I can't wait to see what her next TV/theater venture will be!

ShyBookOwl I love that the cover reminds me of The Babysitter's Club (or any other 80s-90s coming of age books, really). I'm in s3 of Crazy Ex-girlfriend and it just keeps getting better. 4y
danimgill @ShyBookOwl yes!! I couldn't put my finger on what it was about the cover I liked but that's totally it. Enjoy the rest of CXG! I wish I could watch it for the first time again haha 4y

I don‘t know where the normal people are but it isn‘t here.

I rely heavily on humor to cope with the worst things in life, including my own internal struggles with trauma, depression and anxiety. I am looking forward to seeing how Rachel Bloom addresses similar topics in comical ways! I‘m anticipating nothing less than laughter that drives me to tears!

3.5🌟 I appreciated that right away she acknowledges that throughout all her middle school harrassment she was still a privileged white girl. Bloom and I are almost the same age. We grew up loving the same oddball movies that came out in the late 90's. I too was an outsider looking in at the popular kids. Not every essay resonated with me personally but several did and my former teenage self has never felt so seen. Out now! #bookreview

Rachel Bloom certainly knows her audience and I happen to very much be that audience. As much as I laughed, I also cried and cringed, with painful recognition just as often. I love her, I get her, I was always going to love this.

I've been a huge Rachel Bloom fan for years, so I made sure to pre-order her memoir the moment it was listed. As soon as it arrived, I sat down and read the whole thing in a couple hours. Those of you familiar with her music videos and her work in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will hear her unique voice in every word. She writes about a variety of topics with humor and honesty. I have no doubt this will go down as one of my favorite memoirs.

📚 Book mail! 📬 My signed copy of Rachel Bloom's new book arrived! I rarely pre-order books (mostly because hardcovers are expensive, and also because libraries exist) but when I saw Rachel Bloom had a book coming out I knew I'd be making an exception. I really enjoy going to author events, and if she was having an in-person book tour (thanks, COVID) I would have been there. So I did the next best thing 🤷‍♀️ Can't wait to start reading!

Blueberry Enjoy! 4y

Day 1 of #24B4Monday is in the books! Read or listened for 8 hrs and 43 mins!

-Finished the audio for Deacon King Kong (which was amazing)
- Read some of The Dead Husband (until the Hubs rightfully pointed out that maybe that wasn't the best title to read during our anniversary weekend)
-Started I Want To Be Where the Normal People Are, and so far it's hilarious!
- Started the 4th Agatha Raisin book on audio.
