Black Water Lilies
Black Water Lilies | Michel Bussi
From the author of the "wonderfully ingenious" (Marilyn Stasio, "New York Times Book Review") novel "After the Crash," a thrilling tale of a murder that takes place in Claude Monet's garden and the mystery that surrounds it. Giverny, France. During the day, the town is the home of the famous artist Claude Monet and the gardens where he painted his waterlilies. But once the tourists have gone, there is a darker side to the peaceful French village. This is the story of thirteen days that begin with one murder and end with another. Jerome Morval, a man whose passion for art was matched only by his passion for women, has been found dead in the stream that runs through the gardens. In his pocket is a postcard of Monet's Water Lilies with the words: "Eleven years old. Happy Birthday." Entangled in the mystery are three women: a young painting prodigy, the seductive village schoolteacher, and an old widow who watches over the village from a mill by the stream. All three of them share a secret. But what do they know about the discovery of Jerome Morval's corpse? And what is the connection to the mysterious, rumored painting of Black Water Lilies?"

'The novel ends with one of the most reverberating shocks in modern crime fiction.'
Well I guess the problem is with me then. The twist at the end really is neat, but I didn't enjoy the whole of the book. Instead of being intrigued and interested I was mostly annoyed and frustrated. I didn't like the detective and I wasn't much impressed with the writing (maybe the translation wasn't the best either). ⬇️

starlight97 I think I might've bailed if not for respect for the person who recommended it to me. 8mo
starlight97 What I liked about the book is that it taught me new things about a topic I didn't know much about (this time about Claude Monet and his legacy) and it did that well. 8mo

So, there I was, enjoying this charming and intriguing murder mystery set in Monet's hometown of Giverny and being invested in all the interesting characters, when ...BOOM! Along comes a twist so subtle yet so seismic that it blows my socks off. I genuinely did not see it coming & I thoroughly enjoyed it! What a cracking read this one was! And the ending even touched my cold, cynical heart 💙

Forgot to post my #AdventRecommends yesterday so you‘ll get another two today!

The lyrical quality of the writing in this crime novel sets it apart from others in the genre. I found it beautiful and captivating.

This is a pick with one giant reservation (see spoiler in comments if you want to know). The prose is beautiful, smooth, and compelling, with near perfect pacing. There are three storylines that merge in a very unexpected way and it‘s absolutely brilliant. #lmpbc

DGRachel At 84% a character shoot and kills the dog, Neptune. It‘s cruel and brutal, and I almost quit reading. I HATE when an author kills the dog. It‘s a cheap, disgusting, manipulative act of writing. 2y
starlight97 @DGRachel I really hated that part too, but the character who did that was also cheap, disgusting and manipulative, so maybe it's not so much the author's fault. 8mo
DGRachel @starlight97 I totally see where the action is in line with the character. Killing the dog is just one of those things I hate reading and I wish the author had found a different way to illustrate the hideousness of that character. Killing the dog always feels like lazy writing to me. 8mo
starlight97 @DGRachel well yeah, dogs never deserve it. :( 8mo

I am planting myself on my couch to read this today! The month got away from me but this is my #lmpbc book that needs to be winging its way to @kspenmoll on Monday. I‘m excited to get to “one of the most reverberating shocks in modern crime fiction” as the cover blurb promises! Right now I‘m still just getting to know the characters. 😋

DGRachel Thanks for letting me know! I‘m always a little worried when I do the label myself, but the credit/debit machine keeps crashing at my local post office and I got tired of having to either go to the bank and come back with cash or check back with them a week later to see if it‘s fixed! 3y

I don't know if it's because I'm tired but I bawled my eyes out for Stephanie at the end! 😩
I can't imagine living my life not having the best and just settling for the only option, which for Stephanie was being with Jacques. And to have lost all those she loved, Paul, Neptune and Laurenc, by the hands of Jacques too..
I'm so glad she got her happy ending though! 🥰

Beautifully written book, love the use of words and style of writing! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Clutterbucks_Queen So many extracts from this book that I could quote here that I loved! So descriptive and the way it's written definitely makes you fall in love with certain characters! References to Monet are very interesting as well and also a fantastic way to calm the story line down when it got a bit heated. 4y
Clutterbucks_Queen I loved the way the author wrote this book in the past and present tense of Stephanie, it definitely had me thinking. I couldn't for the life of me work out how it would end. 4y
Clutterbucks_Queen I didn't click onto the fact Stephanie was all three of the main women characters until it came together at the end! I'd say Michel Bussi is a very good author and is brilliant at creating an atmosphere of suspense! 4y

I plucked this one randomly from my TBR pile. If the cover sticker is anything to go by, I bought it as part of a buy-one-get-one-half-price offer. Turned out to be the best book I‘ve read so far this year.

I thought this was going to be your standard crime novel. But it is so much more than that. Yes, we have two mismatched detectives trying to solve a murder. But there is also beautiful, lyrical prose rarely (if ever?) seen in the Crime genre.

TheEllieMo As the tale gradually unfolds, the story seems to become more and more confusing, but all becomes clear in an ending that I was not expecting. All I want to do now is talk about this book!! And re-read it, to try to spot the clues! (edited) 4y

Thanks to @AnneCecilie and @LeeRHarry for suggesting that we visit Daunt Books in London! One unusual thing is it‘s partly organized by geographic region. You can find travel guides, fictional books by authors from that country, and also books SET in that country! So you never really know what you‘re going to find. For example, in the France section I found this book! I loved After the Crash but hadn‘t seen any of his others translated. Exciting!

A tale of obsessive love with a great twist at the end.

Black Water Lilies is one of the most unique thrillers I've read in a while. This book is beautifully written. The prose and the story are absolutely enchanting. I didn't know a murder mystery could be so poetic! The pace of the story is great. Michel Bussi successfully manages to keep you at the edge of your seat and just when you think you know what is going on, he surprises you with something completely unexpected! I would highly recommend it!
