Would have been good if the author didn't drag it out so long or write like she never went to school.

Desiree and Lena, though half-sisters, look just like twins. Death, deception, and dark family secrets here, with plenty of twists 😳. At right are my parents with their identical twin daughters in 1933-they were 19 when I was born ❤️

This one has been on my #TBR for a long time! A little predictable (which isn‘t great for a mystery) but I liked the perspective of an young woman going to great lengths to avenge the death of her estranged sister. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks
Read in May- Lena‘s sister, Desiree, was well know in social media and was found dead apparently due to an overdose. Lena didn‘t see her sister for the last 2 years but she is not convinced that her sister death was for this reason. The story is about Lena to try to find out what really happened to her sister, to discover how was her life for the last 2 years. Many family secrets will be revealed. But this is another novel where the death motive⬇️
Such a great mystery! A lot of twists and turns and so hard to put down. Hoping it becomes a series.
Super Read Sunday! Fun mystery. Who is playing in that game again? #currentread #booksoverfootball
This is a very solid 4 star for me. I was engaged and entertained for most of the book Thought the pace was very well handled, the MC has good complexity to her character. The quality dipped a little when it came to the ending, it was fine, but it wasn't a wow. Half a point off there. There are a couple of minor hindsight plotholes, another half a point off there. But definitely above average and worth a couple of hours of anyone's time.
Idk if it‘s the book or the fact that the last few times I‘ve listened to a book narrated by Bahni Turpin we‘re YA, but I‘m having a hard time picturing her as an adult, so things feel off.
#enjoying the story though.
As someone newer to the thriller genre, I enjoyed this book. Not too many jump scares, and plenty of plot twists to stay entertained
Hope you‘re enjoying your week and your Wednesday 🧡 Everyone‘s invited to play !

I really enjoyed this book...up to the final pages, where I just didn't buy the motivation of the murderer. I loved the protagonist's voice, the sense of place, the joy and messiness of family. The author has really grown since she wrote Hollywood Homicide. I'm hoping the next book I read by her sticks the landing.
I think I‘m in the minority here with not loving this mystery. I liked the MC a lot but struggled to stay engaged. I may just be in a reading rut, but this book didn‘t keep calling me to pick it up.
I‘ve read some mixed reviews about this book but I really enjoyed it. I read it in one day! I found myself sucked into the story and I had to keep reading to find out what happened. I loved it!
This was a surprise hit! I much prefer Strong Black Woman (as the MC called herself) to unreliable white woman (in other thrillers) investigating a crime. Bahni Turpin narrates the #audiobook.
Desiree, a young reality star, dies of an overdose in the Bronx one night. Her estranged, studious older sister Lina sets out to prove it was murder. Their record producer father seems to be stonewalling, and Desiree‘s best friend may be an enemy. 🤔🤨
This newish mystery centers on a murdered Black social media influencer whose half-sister is the only person who believes she didn‘t die by overdose. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#like-a-sister
When the only appealing BOTM is thriller/mystery/suspense, you go with it!
Strong pick! What is wrong with my radar that it hasn‘t picked up Garrett before? Aside from not loving the narrator‘s favourite curse, this was awesome - fast paced, great characters, and a complete page-turner. I loved that we followed all the clues as the story slowly unfolded and the end, while not necessarily something you‘d see coming wasn‘t so far out of left field it felt implausible. Time to go read more from Garrett!
While unique, I am really not loving this as the narrator‘s signature curse.
#AprilTBR! I‘m still making good progress in my quest to #readmyowndamnbooks but I didn‘t get to my #SweetReads book last month so now I‘ve got 3 (since there were two in last month‘s box) plus some library reads and the TBR books I‘ve pulled off my shelf to keep me busy this month.
My April #botm picks! I almost also picked Kaikeyi, the fantasy pick, but I ordered it for the library and decided to wait and have a look at it in person before deciding if I want to read it. #botm
Pt 2 of February reading wrap:
5⭐️ reads: Like a Sister, The Maid, Cider House Rules
Loving this one so far. I‘ve really enjoyed every Kellye Garrett I‘ve ever read, so I knew this would be a home run (plus Bahni Turpin narrates!?) if you have the Libro.fm ALCs, it‘s one of the choices for the month! Otherwise, it‘ll be out soon!
