The Vacation
The Vacation | John Marrs
The Vacation is a compulsive, holiday-set thriller from John Marrs, the author of The One, now a Netflix Original Series. How far would you run to escape your past? Venice Beach, Los Angeles. A paradise on earth. Tourists flock to the golden coast and the promise of Hollywood. But for eight strangers at a beach front hostel, there is far more on their mind than an extended vacation. All of them are running from something. And they all have secrets theyd kill to keep . . . Originally published as Welcome to Wherever You Are, this is a re-edited release perfect for fans of T. M. Logan.

I enjoyed learning about all the people who landed at a hostel in Venice Beach. They are all running from, or searching for, something. Even tho there are a lot of characters it's easy to keep track of everyone. There are a lot of deaths, past & present, in these people's lives & quite a few surprises; some of the little bombs Marrs sprinkled throughout the plot took me completely by surprise. The last few, in particular, I did not see coming!

bookandbedandtea Turns out this was previously released under another name, I'll glad I hadn't read it before. He has another one coming out soon that I can't wait to read! 6mo
BarbaraBB He‘s a master in adding twists! I liked this one too and am looking forward to that new one because it is a speculative fiction book, which I love even more than his thrillers (edited) 6mo

Although it is definitely not his best (it‘s one of his earliest thrillers, re-edited and renamed a few years afters its publication) I still enjoyed John Marrs‘s book about travelers from all over the world meeting each other in a rundown LA hostel. All carry secrets from their past and the book is full of plot lines and twists. I couldn‘t stop reading!

Librarybelle Sounds good! 9mo

TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed The One but haven't tried any of his other books!! 9mo
BarbaraBB @TheAromaofBooks I loved that one and the tagged one and have now become obsessed with his backlist 9mo
bookandbedandtea @BarbaraBB @TheAromaofBooks I have also started reading his backlist due to loving The One and The Passengers! I agree that the couple older ones I've read so far are good, but not quite as good. 9mo
BarbaraBB @bookandbedandtea Oh wow, which ones have you read from his backlist? I only read the tagged book beside this one and it was okay too (edited) 9mo
bookandbedandtea @BarbaraBB I have When You Disappeared languishing on my kindle, thanks for the reminder! I've read Her Last Move, which was somewhere between okay and good, and the tagged, which scared the crap out of me. I can't objectively say whether it was a good thriller or not because it hit too close to home. 😱 9mo
TheAromaofBooks Oh wow, The Passengers sounds really good, too!! I loved the way The One just was such a thought-provoking read. It raised so many different questions but never came across as polemic. It's a book I still find myself thinking about from time to time. @bookandbedandtea 9mo
Cathythoughts Tagging all these Marrs books. I‘m stuck in this one at the moment and it‘s good , Thankyou for the recommendation Barbara 9mo
Cathythoughts Love this photo too 👍🏻♥️ 9mo
intothehallofbooks I love John Marrs but haven‘t read this one yet! 9mo
BarbaraBB @bookandbedandtea I have those two on my shelves. Too close home? That must be intense 9mo
BarbaraBB @intothehallofbooks You love him too? Any favorites? I am so into him! 9mo
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts i am a bit obsessed by him at the moment (and by Lennon), I am glad you are enjoying his books too 🤍🤍 9mo
bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks I still think about The One and The Passengers occasionally. I am completely opposed to self driving cars due to The Passengers. 😬 9mo
bookandbedandtea @BarbaraBB Someone close to me has reached out to suicide hotlines in the past and the thought that they may yet talk to someone like Laura was hard for me to handle. (No spoilers- the blurb tells that much.) 9mo
Suet624 Hmmm…The One sounds goods. Guess I need to be on the lookout for that one. 9mo
BarbaraBB @bookandbedandtea That is awful, I just read the blurb. 9mo
Cathythoughts Yes Lennon. I‘ve read Broken River and Subdivision. Time to try another 😁 9mo
TheAromaofBooks @bookandbedandtea - I'm already pretty against self-driving cars because I'm a smidge paranoid about things of that nature (also don't like the idea of “smart“ home appliances or devices that sit about listening to me so I can conveniently order things from Amazon haha) So maybe The Passengers would be right up my alley 😂 9mo
bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks I liked the book very much but, yes, I think anyone who reads must come away with a sense of concern about the technology we already rely on so heavily. 9mo
bookandbedandtea @BarbaraBB I can't judge for sure but I suspect the quality of writing was in line with the rest of his books, so there's that. It just happened to be a fraught subject for me. 9mo

This was a book that was originally released as “Welcome to Wherever Your Are“ in 2015. It is set in a hostel in Venice Beach, California and while it has many characters and multiple story lines that intersect in various ways (perhaps stretching credulity) , it was a fun and easy read. There is a bit of a thriller aspect to it and it had some violence, but overall it had a lighter feel. I kept imagining it as a movie as I read it. 4/5 stars!

🎧 I almost DNF‘d this book but the author wrote The One, so …

About a group of people meeting & staying at a Hostel in Venice Beach. Multiple characters with multiple story lines in multiple time lines. I didn‘t know if I had the energy or will to keep them all straight.

Give it a try. I was too lazy to find another book 😆 and soon I was drawn into the intrigue!! It slowly ramps up and YESSS becomes a fun popcorny murder mystery!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

BookLineNSinker I love John Marrs, have you tried anything other than The One? I love his books and they're almost all available on Kindle for free! The tagged book was insane, if you love thrillers! 2y
Twainy @BookLineNSinker I‘ve read 4 of his books and they were great. The One was my first & the best. His audiobooks & Kindle editions are on sale right now so I got his new audiobook & kindle edition of Keep it in the Family for $5.98. Excited to read it! 2y
BookLineNSinker I have heard he released a new book! I will definitely have to check it out! 2y
