The Passengers
The Passengers: A near-future thriller with a killer twist from the bestselling author of THE ONE | John Marrs
Eight self-drive cars set on a collision course. Who lives, who dies? You decide. 'Provocative, terrifying and compulsive. Another savagely clever near future thriller' Cara Hunter, bestselling author of CLOSE TO HOME The new gripping page-turning thriller for fans of BLACK MIRROR from the bestselling author of HER LAST MOVE and THE ONE - soon to be a major Netflix series. When someone hacks into the systems of eight self-drive cars, their passengers are set on a fatal collision course. The passengers are: a TV star, a pregnant young woman, a disabled war hero, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife - and parents of two - who are travelling in separate vehicles and a suicidal man. Now the public have to judge who should survive but are the passengers all that they first seem? ________________________________ WHAT READERS ARE SAYING 'I was gripped right from the start - the plot had many twists and turns' - Melanie 'An absorbing, engaging read that grabs you and doesn't let go, keeping you awake long past your bedtime' - Gisele 'One of the most thrilling books I've read this year' - Luke 'Marrs is so talented at creating these future worlds that are completely plausible and therefore utterly terrifying' - Kate 'Has many twists and turns which keep you guessing to the very last page' - Greta 'My heart is still pounding just thinking about this brilliantly twisted novel. An edge of your seat read' - Sara

Whoa! So I was thinking my "self-imposed book buying ban" has been for about a month. Apparently I started it 3 months ago! My TBR shelves are still overflowing but I'm down a few. I did also get a couple of ARCs and HAD ? to buy only 3 books (2 sequels and one pre-order) . This is my first "unnecessary" purchase but it only cost me $12 so I'm still feeling good! #forthegrandkids

I know that @notesonbookmarks really liked THE PASSENGERS. I read about 40 pages of it, but it was due back at the library last month, and I wasn‘t invested enough to frantically finish it. And then I kind of forgot about it.

Should I re-request it and give it another go...?

RainyDayReading I was in a similar situation. But I got a little further in than you at first (I was getting ready to go to the library to take it back and thought oh let me just see what this was about) and had to know what was going on so I wound up finishing it in one sitting the day it was due back 😅 I enjoyed it, so I would say give it another try. You never know you might like it better the second time around. 4w
howjessreads @RainyDayReading ok, maybe I‘ll give it another shot!! 3w

After reading, The Passengers, self-driving cars are a solid no for me!! I read, The One, last year at this time and I gotta say John Marrs writes some spooky tech thrillers 👀

I listened to this on Audible after hearing about it on the podcast Currently Reading, and it was soooo good! It has a full cast and takes place in the future, in Britain, where driverless cars are made mandatory. A hacker hijacks 8 cars and says that in 2 and a half hours each will be dead. The hacker then live streams each passenger's journey, and forces a jury to pick one passenger to save. This was a great one to listen to while working out!

I was only supposed to be picking up my son's library holds as I had just procured a stack of classics I was eager to crack open. But the Black Mirror-ness of this one grabbed me. Story is interesting but character development needs work. Worth it if you want a freaky-tech page turner, but pass if you're in it to get lost in the story. I'd love recs for something like this with a little more substance please and thanks!

The concept of driverless or automated vehicles does not seem so far away.... So 'Passengers' is a deeply concerning look at what happens when political grandstanding starts to take the place of the common good.... With a group of self driving cars held hostage, how do we decide who is worth saving and who to let die? Suspenseful, well crafted and, scarily, not too far from the realms of possibility... Great stuff!

You‘re riding in your self-driving car when suddenly the doors lock and you have lost all control. Then a mysterious voice tells you, “You are going to die.” 8 people find themselves in this terrifying situation. From cameras hidden in their cars, their panic is broadcast to millions of people. But the public will show their true colors when they are asked: “Which of these people should we save...And who should we kill first?

Really entertaining futuristic thriller where someone hijacks eight completely autonomous cars and a jury have to decide who lives and who dies 😮
Full of twists and turns, some great characters and it makes you think about how we judge people without necessarily knowing the facts. It would make a great holiday read and a great tv series!

8 driverless cars are taken over by The Hacker, the inquest jury, headed by MP Jack Larsson is told to decide who of the 8 will survive…

What follows is one of the most twisty thrillers I‘ve read. There are so many secrets and lies to keep you guessing right to the breathtaking end. A definite must read for any lover of a dark thriller……a thought provoking nail biter….a brilliant 5 * read.
