The Housemaid
The Housemaid | Freida McFadden
An addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist that's burning up Instagram, Freida McFadden's The Housemaid is perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Lisa Jewell, and Verity. "Welcome to the family," Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I'll soon learn that the Winchesters' secrets are far more dangerous than my own... Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband. I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But she soon finds out... and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late. But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don't know who I really am. They don't know what I'm capable of...

A fast-paced, twisty novel that I read in two days. Great psychological thriller that reads sort of like a diary. This book captured my attention and held it throughout the story. Recommended if you like domestic thrillers.

BarkingMadRead I just finished this as well, but that tag like at the top has me like hmmmmmmm really? 2w

This is an easy book to get into. After the first bit, it seemed like it was getting too predictable. I hadn't read any of the reviews, just knew it had a super high review rating. So, was pleasantly surprised to see that the ending was not what I was expecting. Realistic? Nope. Not in the least! But I'm a sucker for exactly what went down at the end. Can't help it. Also, I'm wondering if the next book will be worth reading. Curious about Millie..

** Not in Litsy library and won't let me add **

I didn't think it was possible, but this one was even better than the first! I don't even try to figure out her books anymore, I just enjoy the ride, and what a crazy one this was! There's no way I could have seen that ending coming! Loved it!

ItsAnotherJen I was wondering if the next one was worth reading. I enjoyed the first one! I'll add it. Thanks for the review! 3w

Well this was.....something. Very similar to the book The Last Mrs. Parrish. I read this as a traveling book so the fun part was seeing everyone's reactions to the over the top, shocking behavior.

This was a very creepy psychological thriller which definitely had a few twists, it fell between pick and so-so, even though it wasn‘t perfect it kept you reading to find out what happens so landed on pick for me. I finished this one book for #novelnovember

I was looking for something light to distract me, which this did. It was a low pick. The setup was unlikely and unbelievable, though fun enough that I wasn‘t tempted to bail. The major twist was something I totally did not see coming, and it made the setup an order of magnitude more unlikely and unbelievable. But it also made everything more sympathetic and likable. The ending was way too pat for me, which makes me disinclined to read the sequel.

This book has to be one of the best psychological thrillers I have read since Verity. There were so many twists and turns throughout it. I binged this book in one day and can‘t wait for the sequel. Freida McFadden did a spectacular job writing this book.

I heard many things about this book and decided to give it a go. The quote on the cover is enticingly creepy enough!

Great read for spooky season. Millie just was released from prison and needs a job. Nina hires her to take care of her household. Crazy circle of events leads to an attic that has a story of its own. 🤫

Picked this up the other day on Audible, it was a daily deal. A bit ludicrous but…kept me engaged for the first half of my international flight. Entertaining thriller. Millie is hired as a housekeeper for a young wealthy couple but right from the start she senses something isn‘t right.

I couldn‘t put this down. This is the first book that I read by this author and I definitely will be downloading everything I can get my hands on by her now ASAP. Just when you think you know what‘s going on and what‘s going to happen, everything changes with this one. I loved the characters and that ending was just perfect. Perfect lazy Sunday morning with my best bud who thinks this lounger is his 😆 Liking this book! it's giving me Verity vibes so far, but way better.

LitStephanie Reading a book in the sun looks lovely! We have hardly had any sunny weekends yet and I am a little envious. 7mo
Jennaree3 @LitStephanie where do you live?! We have like 3 months of sun here and I just basically live outside. Would totally move south in a heartbeat 😎 7mo
LitStephanie @Jennaree3 we usually have rainy springs but with plenty of sunny days, but this year is just soggy. Weird weather here in the western USA what with climate change. 7mo
Jennaree3 @LitStephanie strange weather! We have had several nasty storms resulting in tornado watches which is odd for this area, too. Wishing you sunny days from the east coast. 🐶✌️😎 🏖 7mo
LitStephanie Thank you! I am sure we will get some eventually. Tornados are scary, hope they don't materialize near you. 7mo
