The endpapers of this edition are so well done. Elaine expiring in the boat which resembles a coffin, bearing her to her death & the indifference of Lancelot.
A diverting way to spend five minutes, watching a Tate Gallery video about Waterhouse's three paintings inspired by Tennyson's "The Lady of Shallot".

pick"The Lady of Shallot" is a short poem, but full of romantic Arthurian images of castles, enchantments, and a doomed damsel.
Tennyson took Malory's tragic story of Elaine of Astolat's unrequited love for Lancelot, changing the knight's churlishness toward Elaine into mere obliviousness, but managing to retain the dreadful sense of the inevitable working out of the curse of a death foretold. I'm tempted to a re-read of "The Idylls of the King" soon.
A woman is imprisoned in a tower and can only watch the outside world through a #mirror and must weave what she sees.

Looking for books for a reading challenge, I found this Tennyson copy on my shelf. It's barely held together, and it is missing pages, including the title page, but it does contain The Lady of Shalott. ❤️
It also has an inscription - though I can't quite read the date. (Is that a 4, 7, or 9?)

I remember concretely things I memorized in school, e.g. the definition of "synecdoche." As an adult, I would like to add to my repertoire of knowledge bits by trying to memorize a little something each day. No rhyme or reason to the selection, just pieces I find interesting, pithy or otherwise noteworthy. Hopefully it will be fun, and maybe a little useful.

This was the page today (I'm a bit behind) on my "Tiny Pleasures" calendar.
I don't know if it's what they meant by "transports," but a verse that I love, and that takes me to a boat with Anne Shirley, is the Lady of Shalott.
I dramatically read it to my husband on a road trip. Fortunately, we're still married. ?
I'm curious - what would you choose as "a verse that transports?"

Anne of Green Gables made me love this poem as a child and then Loreena McKennitt, a Canadian singer/harpist, set it to music in the '90s and I played it OVER AND OVER. Have a listen:

I first found this poem through Dame Agatha of all people, her novel, The Mirror Crack'd From Side To Side is named after a stanza of this. There's another two parts, it's a very long poem, more of a sonnet. One of Flavia DeLuce novels is also named for part of this poem, I Am Half Sick Of Shadows.

After reading The Mirror Crack'd From Side To Side by Dame Agatha, I was inspired to look up the Tennyson poem the title comes from, & I loved it. This is the first half. It's also the where a title of a Flavia de Luce novel came from as well.

@thegirlwiththelibrarybag got me thinking about paintings- this one is one of my favourite paintings and poems The Lady of Shalott, it's so beautiful and sad. Ophelia is another favourite of mine as well, I love paintings that are inspired by literature, so I wanted to ask of Litsy if anyone else has some favourites I could put up on my walls?
Officially done with the Lady of the Shalott patch for my #storytimesampler. I think I'll start Phantom of the Opera next. Mostly because I really don't want to do more frames right now. #Litsystitchers
