"A masterpiece of misdirection." --Geraldine Brooks"Mobility is a truly gripping coming-of-age story about navigating a world of corporate greed that's both laugh-out-loud funny and politically incisive." --Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy VietorBunny Glenn believes in climate change. But she also likes to get paid. The year is 1998. The Soviet Union is dissolved, the Cold War is over, and Bunny Glenn is a lonely American teenager in Azerbaijan with her Foreign Service family. Through Bunny's bemused eyes, we watch global interests flock to her temporary backyard for Caspian oil and pipeline access, hearing rumbles of the expansion of the American security state and the buildup to the War on Terror. We follow Bunny from adolescence to middle age--from Baku to Athens to Houston--as her own ambition and desire for comfort lead her to a career in the oil industry, eventually returning to the scene of her youth, where slippery figures from the past reappear in an era of political and climate breakdown. Propulsive and thought-provoking, empathetic yet pointed, Mobility is a story about class, power, politics, and desire told through the life of one woman--her social milieu, her romances, her unarticulated wants. Through Bunny's life choices, Lydia Kiesling masterfully explores American forms of complicity and inertia, moving between the local and the global, the personal and the political, and using fiction's singular power to illuminate a life shaped by its context.

At 15, Bunny is a boy crazy Foreign Service kid spending the summer in Baku; later we see her transformation from an aimless 20-something to a successful PR professional for a family-run oil company. At first it seems that's all there is to it: a girl, a life; by the final scenes, in a near future that is all too plausible, it sinks in that this is a truly devastating novel about climate change. An artfully detailed slow burn, brilliantly done.

Ruthiella Agree. This book was for me a lot more than it seems on the surface. 👍 7mo

I‘m fairly certain that I probably wouldn‘t like/respect Bunny in real life, but in this novel, I did. Following her meandering through her life and her proximity to oil yet not understanding it completely was mesmerizing. This worked for me and liked the quick pace of time.

Welcome to Day 3 of #LitsyTob24!

Our winner today is Mobility, with two thirds of the vote!

Both books had female MCs who were navigating their way through life, alongside unique storytelling about families, but each book had a distinctive style.

What did you think of the storytelling? Did you like both Belle and Bunny?

We‘re looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the books and today‘s result!

Bookwormjillk I bailed on Rogue, and liked Mobility. Although I didn‘t think it was the coming of age story it was made out to be. 10mo
See All 22 Comments
Chelsea.Poole I didn‘t love either of these two 😬 But I did appreciate them both a bit more after reading reviews and I‘ll look forward to reading the comments from you all in this thread! 10mo
BarbaraBB I struggled through Rouge and appreciated Mobility much more. It felt so on point, about climate change and how we integrate it into our lives in a way that feels fitting and maybe reassuring as if we do what we can and should do. It‘s way too little though, Kiesling seems to implicate. 10mo
sarahbarnes I may still have to give Mobility a try after this vote! I am a shameless Awad fan and I did love Rouge. 😊 10mo
AmyG I didn‘t read either…..so waiting patiently for the books I DID read. 10mo
Deblovestoread Awad is not for me. I thought Mobility was good and the ending was definitely on point. 10mo
kwmg40 I liked Mobility very much. I'm still working on Rouge. Finding it hard to get into it, but I really liked All's Well so will probably continue. BTW, is it a complete coincidence that Awad has a book called Bunny and that's also the name of Kiesling's main character. Was this a fated pairing? 😂 10mo
Readerann I loved Kiesling‘s The Golden State, so I will definitely get to Mobility. Rouge was meh for me. 10mo
squirrelbrain I agree @Bookwormjillk @BarbaraBB @Deblovestoread - I fought my way through Rouge (list-completist here 🙋🏻‍♀️) but liked Mobility. 10mo
squirrelbrain @kwmg40 - I though exactly that about the ‘Bunny‘ thing when I wrote this post earlier! 10mo
squirrelbrain @sarahbarnes @Readerann - I think you‘ll like Mobility. It‘s rather a quiet book, in my view, but seems more impactful because of that. 10mo
squirrelbrain @AmyG - hopefully soon! 🤞😃 10mo
squirrelbrain @chelsea.poole - at least we had better books, in general, than the real ToB! 🤪 10mo
BarbaraBB @Readerann I loved The Golden State too! 10mo
Ruthiella I was neutral on both Belle and Bunny, though I recognized a lot more of myself in Bunny than Belle. I am an Awad fan, but found Rouge disappointing. It was too rooted in the fantastical for me to enjoy. I liked Mobility a lot. As @squirrelbrain notes, it‘s quiet but it does have a kick to it if you look for it. 10mo
Hooked_on_books After liking each of Awad‘s books less than the one before, I refused to read Rouge, the only book of ours I didn‘t read. Then I hated Mobility and bailed on it. So, this pairing was a bit of a wash for me. 10mo
squirrelbrain That was all a bit rubbish then, wasn‘t it?! @Hooked_on_books 10mo
Larkken @kwmg40 I wondered the same thing about the Bunnies! 10mo
Larkken Awad has my heart. Her kind of weird just get me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
fredthemoose I liked Mobility, although realized that if it wasn‘t for ToB I don‘t know I would have ever thought about it again. Rouge was a hard no for me. The MC was so dopey it was like being sober and trying to follow your drunk friend‘s stories for HOURS without any payoff or even a funny anecdote by the end. 9mo

It took me a while to get into this book but I ended up liking it much more than I thought it would.

I loved the satirical moments when Bunny tries to consider climate change and other momentous issues affecting the world but then gets distracted by a colleague's designer shoes. I'd like to think that I'm not like Bunny but I realize I'm writing this on my computer in my well heated home with my car parked outside the door. 😅

Ruthiella Great review. 👍 I think this one was pretty subtle and definitely is intended to make the reader consider their own choices and complicity. 10mo

I agree with all the reviews on this- those that liked and didn‘t like it. I really enjoyed it though and think this is real for a lot of us. Recycle, buy recycled goods, eat less meat/no meat. Buy nice things, go on holidays via planes. Consequences.
We know we do things that don‘t help, and times running out.

Similar to her debut novel, there‘s a lot of mundane description in this book that‘s either going to work for a reader or it‘s not. I liked it. There was a lot about Bunny I could identify with, both good and bad. Capitalism, corporate greed, human indifference, the corruption of the oil industry, US complicity, etc. is all reflected through the lens of one ordinary person‘s life. The book is a wake up call and warning.

After a few Littens were ambivalent about this #litsyToB24 book, I went into it worried that I wouldn‘t like it but I really enjoyed it. It‘s billed of a coming of age story but, although the MC‘s childhood travelling around the world as an embassy brat was unusual, it felt more to me like the story of an ‘ordinary‘ woman.

I felt like I could relate to the not knowing your place in the world or at work, and never quite feeling like a grown-up!

BarbaraBB Great review Helen! I liked this one a lot too. 11mo

squirrelbrain It‘s very expensive here @TrishB - and not in any library systems / subscription services either. I ended up buying a used copy (although it looks new) from Abebooks for (d0, including postage from the US. It was good, but not worth the UK price! 11mo

Leniverse @TrishB Yes, I'm going to pass on the books where the only option is a £25 hardcover. I won't have the time to read all the ToB books in time for the voting anyway. So the price makes for a natural selection. 11mo

This book is being billed as coming of age, but to me it was more of a warning about what will happen if we don‘t all make changes. That said it was probably a warning that was too drawn out and kind of up and down. The interesting setting in Azerbaijan bumped it up a bit in my opinion though. #LitsyTOB24

Megabooks Yes! Not many books set is Azerbaijan. Definitely a nice twist. 11mo

Well, I managed to muscle my way to 56%, but quite frankly I hated this book. I feel like the author created a rube of a character so she could lecture at her/the reader rather than tell a story. And rather than critiquing patriarchy, she seems to be reinforcing it, but making the female characters one note/dumb/incompetent. I can‘t take anymore. #LitsyTOB24

squirrelbrain Oh dear! I had to order a copy from the US - luckily it‘s used, not new so a bit cheaper. 11mo

Readers follow Bunny from adolescence throughout adulthood and across the world in the oil business. Climate change/politics comes up often. I didn‘t enjoy this at all, and hate-listened because it‘s for #litsyToB24 otherwise it‘d have been a rare bail. I loved (and can relate to) the idea of knowing we must change society for the climate but also enjoying the benefits of modern life which is the main takeaway for me but found it lacking.

BarbaraBB I am sorry it didn‘t work for you! 12mo
Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB me too 🫤 and I liked the tagged, an earlier of hers that has stayed with me. Plus good reviews. Maybe it was timing 🤷‍♀️ 12mo
BarbaraBB I liked The Golden State too. This one is rather divergent, if you can say so about a book. It feels like non fiction written as fiction 12mo

Mehso-so

I liked this one less than everyone else seems to have. While it has a lot of important things to say they felt too buried under Bunny‘s skin care regime and thoughts about her weight. I wanted far less of the coming of age aspect and far more of the weighty topics. #litsytob24

squirrelbrain Still waiting for this to come out over here…. 12mo
BarbaraBB I see what you mean. That was a bit annoying indeed yet I loved the rest of it. 12mo
Larkken Omg. Have you read Rouge? I had a moment where I didn‘t look at the book just the review and was wondering why Bunny was a character in Rouge. Haha, now I‘ll somehow get it in my head that Mobility is an Awad mashup. 12mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This one definitely grew on me. Started a sort of a coming of age story of the daughter of a diplomat in Azerbaijan, but then sneakily brought in a lot of individual and societal moral ambiguities and what trade offs we are or aren‘t willing to make for the good of society and in the face of climate change. My first for the #LitsyToB24 !

“Bunny believes in climate change. But she also likes to get paid”.

This is how the book starts. And there‘s so often a “but” after climate change. That‘s what makes this book an important one, its urgency is quite clear. We are Bunny, whether we are pragmatic Americans or critical Europeans (as are the characters in the book), we need to get rid of the “but”. ⬇️⬇️

BarbaraBB In Bunny‘s coming of age she‘s a teenager in Azerbaijan where western countries are negotiating the best terms for pumping oil out of the Caspian Sea. As an adult she works for a Texan oil company. The public opinion on fossil fuels changes during her life, but…. ⬇️⬇️ (edited) 13mo
BarbaraBB
There‘s a lot of business talk in the book and too much time dedicated to Bunny‘s weight, a hundred pages less would have been preferabel, but all in all I think it‘s quite a unique book .

I loved this book! It helps too that I grew up in the Golden Triangle area of Texas that is a huge part of this story because of the oil/gas industry there.

Kiesling tackles climate change, geopolitical issues, social injustices, and more. We see the problems of the world through Bunny's view. As she ages, we see her question her role in these problems.

This is a rich novel that will leave you contemplating it long after you finish.

This book defies categories! Lydia manages to weave politics and business into a compelling coming of age novel.

Bunny is a diplomat brat who spends a formative summer in Baku, Azerbaijan, where information about the oil industry seeps into her. Years later recovering from a breakup she takes a temp job in Houston, which leads to in a career at a mid-size oil company, where she tries to reconcile her beliefs and how they don‘t align with her job.
